Aircraft rarely fly over the South Pole due to several factors. The extreme weather conditions, including severe cold and strong winds, make flying risky. Additionally, there are very few airports or emergency landing sites in Antarctica, which is crucial for safety. Navigation systems can also be affected by the magnetic fields near the poles, adding complexity to flights. Safety regulations, such as ETOPS, limit how far planes can be from airports, and the lack of infrastructure in Antarctica makes compliance difficult. Lastly, there is low demand for routes that require flying over the South Pole, as most major city connections in the Southern Hemisphere do not necessitate this path. These combined challenges make it impractical for commercial airlines to fly over the South Pole.
