Love his books. You might also enjoy By Night in Chile.
One thread that for me brings Bolano, Gaddis and McCarthy together is the idea of what to do when you are personally confronted with the dark side of the human soul. Do you go in there, saison en enfer style, hoping that you do emerge at some point with greater depth, because a big part of it is the not knowing whether you will ever get out or not? Or do you simply hold to the light? I remember back in the 80s as a kinda streetpunk becoming obsessed with the heavy US art-rock band Swans, fronted by this guy Michael Gira, who just seemed to embody this notion of a soul willingly trapped in hell. I think the whole thrust of Western modernity has been to try and hold us to the light. But I'm left wondering whether we are actually simply somewhere building up our own cultural storehouse of hell, Ballard-style, that will at some point crash back out into the world. Indeed, that may be happening.
