Try dropping the air out of the tires it might give you the clearance you need to get it out of the garage or find some smaller tires with the same stud pattern. Might save you pulling your garage apart.
Hi Richard, I only stumbled across your channel the other day, I hope you don't mind but just a few of my thoughts and idea after being a automotive and mechanical engineer all my working life, I'm 64 yrs old now so I know a thing or 2. First of all I'm really impressed with Barra's and the easy power they make and second putting one in a 40 a match made in heaven, my first thought was, get the engine running to make sure it's OK and as soon as you've done that, and your not going to like this bit, pull the engine back out, strip down the front timing cover a fit a NEW oil pump, I've watched A LOT of Barra build vid and the original oil pump is always mentioned as a fail point as it's just isn't up to the job, remembering your potentially going to put the truck on some pretty extreme angles, driving on LONG, HOT, corrugated roads so spend the money, do it once and do it RIGHT !! Also if your going to run high boost I'd do head studs, if not don't worry about it, and just one more thing, keep everything simple and as easy to fix as possible because when you break down WAY outback, you'll understand why, I traveled extensively through the outback and broken down for the strangest reason and keeping it simple and straight forward, WORKS. Seeya Rob
Hey Rob, cheers for the feedback, really appreciate it. I think you’ve got a fair point and when I pull it down to paint the chassis I think I’m going to do it. Trying for a stock setup so I won’t bother with head studs for now!
Fellow engineer with the dream to build something similar. I loved the original plan list. I reckon continue to refer back to it to keep structure to the build. Continue to show wins and losses. Force yourself to keep a video a month. Have a game plan for the channel after the build. I think it'd be really cool if you built on your eng background through the build and document the build as an engineer, focusing on any custom design work etc that you do. Also I'd love to get more detail on what's involved to get the car engineered and approved, please document how you're doing that and what's involved. Subscribed!
Hey James, cheers for the feedback. I'll try to do a video a month, and you're right, I need to think about after the build. I was thinking about doing some trips but it's not the same as car building. In regards to the custom design I definitely plan to document and focus on it, but annoyingly that won't start until the later episodes!
I have 40 series shorty that I rolled last year. I was playing with different ideas for it, but just recently settled on converting it into a ute and swapping chassis for 80 series. Love the engineering bit and the fact were starting with a checklist. My first video, I am sure will see each other more often ;)
Cool video buddy.. Lawrie's a good sort isn't he? You're lucky to have his expertise on a build like this so you're in good hands.. I wish I had his brain to help with my 55/80 build. I'd considered a video series on mine briefly but theres not enough hours in the day to do everything AND produce regular videos.. good luck and looking forward to seeing your progress.
Looks like an awesome start! Go heavy on all nitty gritty details. Subbed up and eagerly awaiting the next instalments as this is one of my dream builds.
This would be a much better video series if the build was complete and you uploaded a video every hour! Liked subscribed and am looking forward to the next video. Have a 74 model in my yard and am still deciding what to do with it so looking forward to seeing this take shape.
Haha thanks mate, I’ve got enough footage for another 2 episodes, feel free to come around and edit it yourself if you’re keen on hourly uploads 😜. Without knowing much about it, the 74 series seems like it’s prime to drop a Barra in it?
@@DesignedandBuilt the cab has a bit of rust so if I was going to redo the cab and chassis/donk swap I'd probably start with a better condition cab.might have to go resto on this one. Rebuild the 2f, tidy it up then sell it to fund the next build.... who knows.
Awesome build man. I'm from the US I saw my first 45 30 years ago when I was thirteen and fell in love. unfortunately almost impossible to find one here and if you do the price is astronomical. Aqualu out of Canada is now producing an aluminum 45 tub that bolts onto a 80 which I think will be my next build, I can't wait to watch your series.
Id say your best way to beable to move the cruiser in and out would be to get cheap old low profile 16inch tyres on your wheels and that should take at least 2 or 3 inches out of the hight. I had the same issue but also had an archway so what did i do nocked the arch out and put a new lintle in and lowered the floor so now have 2.5m hight through my carport, wasnt cheap but now ill have no dramas at all.
2.5M sounds like the dream! If I get desperate I'll roll it out on the low profile tires, looking to park it in there permanently and don't want to let air down/put stockies on every time!
Is a hard one moving the roller door. You are very limited by the sheer size of the door when it is rolled up. You might be better off with a low profile sectional door. I had a cruiser 45 previously with 35’s and I had a taller than standard door and still only just fit it in. Love the series already. I am in planning stages of building a gq/45. With six litre ls based motor
where did your mate source the body mount rubbers and sleeves for your chassis mounts? Huge fan! you're an inspiration for my 45-80 build I just started, cheers
You know, instead of hacking up your garage door you can always just let thr tyres down then pump them back up when its out. Unless you're wanting to take it in and out a lot. My old comp truck I had a bare set of rims that I used to bolt on (firstly because I didn't want it sitting on treps for months at a time but mostly because it didn't fit through the door)
Hey Nathan, yeah that’s a good point, I will likely do that initially and see how much I end up taking it out, I’m sure my neighbours would appreciate the compressor blasting at 6AM when I’m leaving early on a trip 🤣
On that, I was harvesting in northern NSW and guys there had the sickest trays! Built in to thr headboard was a retractable air line and water line. It had a 45 litre water tank with pump and spray nozzle and some cool under tray storage with little doors. They were farm trays but honestly weren't that big and there's no reason it couldn't be made into a tourer tray.
G'day Mate, Great Video,.. love it! I've had 3 x 45's (9 cruisers all together) and loved them all... I've always wanted to do a conversion mod, but time....... Hey you specifically mention that you recommend the '94 chassis, but not the '95. Any chance you can explain why ?? Differences?? Thx
Hi Riley, I got it as a package deal with the chassis. It is harder to find cabs without any running gear in them, keep your eyes peeled for unfinished projects in the facebook groups. I looked at some FJ's which ranged from 5-10K and realistically couldn't find without rust for 7-10K.
Great Job Rich. What car will it be on the rego papers? I was told in NSW it will be considered an 80 series. That rego goes off the frame. Is that the case in Vic?
It's an awesome video!I have fj45 and fj40 I would like to change it chassis with 80series, is there a difference in the frame 80 series from 91 to 97? I want to build one it's like your truck Im look for about measurements fj45 cab on 80series, Im from Libya , the Libya has hardest landscape, dune , rockes and hug sand of desert .I love adventure with fj45 .
Random question, seens you used most of the qu patrol running gear including diffs and transfer case would it have been easier to have used a patrol chassis and made the 45 cab it the patrol chassis??? Either way your doing an awesome job im a welder fabrictor by trade my down fall is not knowing how to use cad
Hey Dan, absolutely fair point. I don’t know that it would have worked on a patrol chassis to be honest. I think there is only 50mm difference in wheelbase. I think the Barra and ZF are the problem! I personally think the 80 series chassis is better with mechanical design. The rear coil towers and the front radius arms for example are better on an 80. I have also heard of a few people snapping patrol chassis. Thanks mate! I’m definitely the opposite haha, know cad but no idea on welding and fabricating.
Envy your skills… just noticed that the crankcase (holds the most oil ) on your barra engine is on the aft part of the engine contrary to all barra engine I saw. Is that an aftermarket so not to hit when the axle goes up?
Just saying if it's a 1994 chassis what year are the diffs because they are 15 inch rims and in 93they changed to the 16inch rims for the bigger brakes
Good afternoon I am from Moz, I had an accident with my 100 series and I would like to use the engine in a fj45 single cable chassi. I removed the 2F engine. Is this something you recommend ? Suggestions
Did you say you’re are a mechanical engineer? How come you can’t engineer it yourself? Sorry I know nothing about your industry, that’s why I’m asking.
Hi Mark, you have to be accredited by Vicroads to do it, not really sure what's involved but it's not something I can just do easily. I would basically need to go into business to do it and I don't have the experience to just sign off other peoples cars.
This is mint. Yeh heavy on the detail is good. Like what you’re doing and why is great.
Haha cheers mate, I’ll go heavier for the next one.
