4 umpires...all didn't see it hit his foot...can we eject them?...there's not enough accountability for umpires compared to players and managers. The head of the MLB organization should be able to review missed calls and some of these umpires should be suspended or fined also.
If you make everything reviewable the game is going to last 5 hours and then everyone will complain about how long the game lasts. Be careful what you wish for.
@@nwbluezebraYou do realize teams only get one challenge, right? If the call is upheld, they lose it. Meanwhile, I am pretty sure the batter and manager arguing, the umpires conference, and subsequent argument and ejection took longer than a simple challenge review would have.

And it comes back to the same question thats been asked a million times on this channel. Why isnt everything reviewable outside of balls and strikes? No reason this can't be quickly and easily corrected.
Other baseball leagues even have balls and strikes reviewable by having the batter pat his own head. A team has only a few of these reviews, and can be called right away by the batter
The strike call against Jake Meyers before the one that made him pissed off was much worse because it was about 9” below the strike zone! I think that was the one that made everybody so pissed off as the next one that Jake argued about wasn’t too bad. Anyway, they need to use machines to call balls and strikes as these umpires cheat like crazy because their strike zone is all over the place since they’re seldom ever consistent! The umps always favor popular teams, such as the Yankees, in how they call balls and strikes over less popular teams, such as the Astros! Machines don’t cheat! Umps do!
I mean, I know I shouldn't think this way, but if you're an umpire you HAVE to feel like you "made it" when you get to eject your first person from a big league game lol.
It most definitely was a very tough play to call for the man behind the plate, as the ball seemed to first hit the ground and on the rebound it appeared to nick the bottom part of the cleat just under the big toe, so it would also have been hard to tell if there were any scuff marks on the ball!!! But yes, it di appear to change direction after it ricochetted from the ground up!
Define accountability. Who is accountable for what on a batted ball, and how should that be resolved on the field? Remember, the Commissioner's Office has defined this as a non-reviewable play, not the umpires. Are you saying Manfred should be held accountable?
@@teebob21 funny thing is Lindsay already made a video showing how umps are held accountable. I feel like the OP wants umps immediately fired and banned from umpiring ever again.
People really have zero idea how difficult it is to umpire. It happens so fast. Go umpire your local little league game and see how difficult it is. Just play ball. Instant replay has ruined all sports
I dont think this one wouldve been overturned on replay, I don't see any convincing angle that clearly shows it being hit. It is possible a ball has enough spin on it to ricochet off the dirt as it does here, not to mention the frame before the ball hits the ground it is directly above the landing spot, indicating there is no change in direction between the two frames. Now there could've been contact after it hit the ground, but it also could've been all dirt.
These umps are horrible and honestly getting worse. Now they are bringing up umps that can't even get an easy call like this correct. And the player is the one that gets disciplined. The umps have absolutely nothing happen and they can continue blowing calls left and right.
This is where it sucks to be an umpire- thats not an easy call in real time and you can tell its not like the umpire wants to call him out, he's shaking his head as he confirms it that no one saw it hit the foot yet they get yelled at for a split second tough call thats barely even noticeable on slow motion replay.
I downloaded the audio of this video and analyzed it in Audacity and there's just one lone sound, the bat hitting the ball. When I look at it frame by frame* I can see it just grazes his foot, which is lifted off the ground a few inches. The ball comes off of his bat (and foot) with so much spin it changes direction again when it hits the ground, with a big splash of dirt. My favorite angle is from the foul line extended and the 3rd base umpire is staring right in at it, and still couldn't catch it in real time. That's why this should totally be a reviewable play. I think Altuve should be more mad at himself, however. You always run out the play. He didn't and it made him look like an fool. *UA-cam allows you to go frame by frame. Just hit pause (spacebar) and use the , and . keys to go back or forward a frame.
"You always run out the play. He didn't and it made him look like an fool." I literally never see players run out obvious foul balls and if the ball hit his foot, Altuve knows it's an obvious foul ball, ergo, zero reason to run it out.
@@Volante31921 Completely agree. I never "ran out" a foul ball off my foot or leg when I played, nor would I ever. That is what's foolish. If the umps screw it up, so be it -- but I'll always know I was right. Altuve was done wrong and it's easy to see his foot quickly shift directions when the ball hits. As was said already, why on earth would he run if he knew it had hit him? @papavan doesn't know what he's talking about.
Gotta love when an ump fucks up and it means the player has to get ejected. How about ejecting the umps, and stripping their pay when they are this stupid?
It needs to be a “ONE WAY” reviewable play. ONLY if the umpire/umpires call NOTHING. It can’t be reviewable if the umpire calls a foul ball and it didn’t hit the batter only because you can’t pace the runner OR call him out. That’s why it should be a “ONE WAY” reviewable call. I can’t tell you how many times a batter has faked a bat hitting him an it never touched him.
I am definitely not an astros fan considering what they do to my angels , but I have got to agree with Jose on this one. you could clearly see where it hit his foot and I can't blame him for being pissed off about this he had every right to be .

@@user-hi8nj8hd9r Incompetence? It's tough to catch the change of direction of the baseball in super slow-mo let alone real time. Leave your emotions out of it.
The dumb part here is this is really not fair or foul but whether it hit his foot. Stupid that it falls under that. So this should be reviewable as a hbp call and needs to be fixed. The call is overturned it hit his foot therefore it is a foul ball. No reason this shouldn’t be challengeable.
I think the ball hit inside the batters box but just missing Altuve's foot. There was entirely to much bounce to Vientos , had it hit Altuve's foot I really think the ball would have been redirected
Not an umpire here so my question is just for honest input. That seems like a hard call in real time. Is it something they should have caught? If so, was it something the HP umpire should have seen or someone else?
only way PU couldve made this call was sound as his eyes are in the zone and partially obstructed by the batter. 3rd is really the only one that could've seen this and this one is pretty much impossible to see in real time. The only way this was getting called is if PU heard it and it was the guys first MLB game behind the plate, I'm sure he was hearing a bunch of new noises. Not to mention how little this might've contacted his cleat there would've been pretty much no noise distinguishable from dirt.
sometimes as an umpire, you need to take into account the body language of players in situations like this. A professional who just sits there and makes NO move to run to first on a fair ball most likely only doing it because they got hit in the foot. Same thing, sometimes in a 2-man system, you have a swipe tag that you may get straight-lined on, but when you see the runner then immediately slow down to a trot rather than continue sprinting to the next base, it "helps" you fill in the blanks. Here, I completely understand the new HPU not seeing this in real time - very hard glancing touch on the foot; but when you have a chance to get everyone together and consult about it, I think you take body language into account. The real fix for this is making this reviewable; not necessarily all infield fair/foul plays, but you already allow replay for things like catchers interference and HBP, so why not batted ball touches batter while in the box - narrow additional instance for replay that I think will save a lot of heart ache in the future.
professional players will do anything if it means them gaining an advantage (this is literally the last remaining cheating Astro), you can not take player body language or reactions into account at the professional level
I seriously don't get why they have to get together to discuss whether or not the ball hit the batter. My association had a simple mechanic. Whenever ANY umpire saw a batted ball hit the batter, they were to kill the play. It was then up to the HP umpire to rule whether the ball hit the batter in the box (foul ball) or whether the batter was out of the box (out). Why does MLB have to make so many things so hard?
Remind me of an x- chic i had to tell to kick bricks. Constantly accused me of cheating, when I NEVER Did. Exhausting.... since she never thought otherwise, i said F*** It, might as well! Altuve also got tired of it, and went off. BRAVO
Doesn't matter what these "formal" rules are... if you are missing these MAJOR calls and throwing people out your first time behind the plate, then you're doing something wrong.
Don't need the rules on what it is if the ball hits his foot, we all know it is a foul ball. We need a pause or a slow motion of the moment it happens because even in this video you can't tell if it hit him or not since it's at full speed.
Yeah, it's so easy to see ... When you know what to look for ... And it's zoomed in ... And it's slowed down to less than half speed ... And the cameras angle isn't blocked by Altuve's foot ...
Is it just me or are the umpires getting WAY worse than they have ever been!! They miss so many calls and then get butt hurt when anyone dares to question them. I’m starting a fund to buy these crybaby umpires a big case of preparation H for all of their butts hitting so much from being exposed as lousy!
Umpires are statistically getting better every year! You can go back on THIS very channel and watch every ejection from every season for the last 5+ years and see for yourself. Also, fun fact: over 70% of ejections so far this year were managers/players arguing the umpires correct call! I do wish you check out more videos on this channel if you have not. You will learn a lot!
even if it was reviewable... yeah, it changed direction suddenly.. but is that the rotation on the ball or making contact with his foot? I'm not sure it would have been overturned.. either way.. not reviewable... Personally.. I detest the use of replay... I know many want to get them correct.. but it's also taking away much of the charm of the game... IT'S A GAME.. get over it.
I wouldn't say that was a clear trajectory change. The thing is fouling a ball off your toes HURTS! He doesn't really hop or hobble around as though he took a 70+ mph ball off a non-padded part of his body. If you want the call, sell it a little. This is a call stands.

Great video and breakdown!! Really liked it
The MLB should consider expanding the review process to include calls that require a conference with officials.
All calls that are completely objective should be reviewable. There is no gray area here other than lack of camera angles.
The ball either hit his foot or it didn't? That should be reviewable.
The ball either landed foul or it didn't? That should be reviewable.
I really don’t think it’s fair that you implied Jose Altuve loses his temper a lot. The guy has a very cool head
Altuve used to. And was so likable. Then 2017 happened and he has as much PTSD as the Astros fans do still unfortunately

Wait wasn’t his only other ejection in 2016. You’re really doing him dirty with that framing. You should probably issue a retraction
Lindsay loves to make players, coaches and announcers look bad.
Lindsay - at 1:44 it looks like you attempted to insinuate that Altuve is a hot head and argues a lot. The announcer said something like "you don't see Jose lose it quite like that hardly ever". And then you put up the fancy graphic showing previous ejections for Altuve and Espada and you said something like "Oh really? (in a super snarky tone) Last time on Close Call Sports". Do you realize this is only Altuve's 2nd ejection in his 13 year career??? Come on. This is where you lose me as a fan. You come across as so so anti-player and anti-manager. You seem to have a real animosity towards players, managers and announcers. In this situation I completely understand Altuve losing it. He is not a player that whines and argues excessively. But you like to make it seem like he's just a baby that can't deal with a call that goes against him. I just don't understand why you feel the need to constantly berate managers, players and announcers.

Reminds me of of when I was young. I was told to always keep my creates polished with enough wax that if I got hit in foot, the wax would mark the ball making the umps decision easier.
Welcome to The Show, James! Love that guy.
That play was reviewed closely from different angles in slow motion, and there is a view that shows the ball hit the ground and then bounce off of Altuves foot. It did not hit his foot first!
It was clearly a faul ball. That umpire is the new Angel Hernandez. He also lost the ball and strike count on another player. What a shame
Said Jose, “Can’t you see?!”
4 umpires...all didn't see it hit his foot...can we eject them?...there's not enough accountability for umpires compared to players and managers. The head of the MLB organization should be able to review missed calls and some of these umpires should be suspended or fined also.
Need more accountability with the umpires, if your stats are the worst at playoff your gone or something along those lines
I was at the game and when he was ejected it was the loudest cheer of the game up to that point 😂 Make everything reviewable

@@nwbluezebraYou do realize teams only get one challenge, right? If the call is upheld, they lose it. Meanwhile, I am pretty sure the batter and manager arguing, the umpires conference, and subsequent argument and ejection took longer than a simple challenge review would have.

If only there was some sort of technology to make sure calls were correct.... Nah, that would offend the umpires union to much. Either use it for everything or get rid of it.
Has nothing to do with the umpires union lol. Umpires have been very vocal about their support of replay, they want to get calls correct
So you believe it's the umpires that decide what is an isn't reviewable? Boy are you on the wrong page!
Does it matter that his front foot was out of the box and in fair territory? Would he not be out regardless?
And it comes back to the same question thats been asked a million times on this channel. Why isnt everything reviewable outside of balls and strikes? No reason this can't be quickly and easily corrected.
Other baseball leagues even have balls and strikes reviewable by having the batter pat his own head. A team has only a few of these reviews, and can be called right away by the batter
Well judgment call can’t be reviewed because they’re judgements. So everything can’t be reviewable.
@@skinfluteyall sorts of judgement calls are reviewable. There is no reason whatsoever that every call on the field can’t be reviewable
@ingiford175 what other baseball leagues?

Umps do!
The only players standing around was Altuve. Can't always sell something nobody else sees.
It hit his foot stop defending umpires terrible calls we watch the games fir the players not the umpires
Ive been in that situations alot in college ball its hard to see from the plate umpire viewpoint.
I mean, I know I shouldn't think this way, but if you're an umpire you HAVE to feel like you "made it" when you get to eject your first person from a big league game lol.
Seems easy enough to add to replay and probably should. These can be hard to see in real time, obviously, and even on replay
Why is ANY play or action non-reviewable?
For the first time in 8 years Jose getting the heave ho 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 THIS IS ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The ump that ejected Jose the first time was at third base.
And once again, we won't see any accountability for this BS.
@@skinflutey It is usually those who know the least that whine the loudest.
Altuve should be held accountable for not running out the ball when no one called it foul. They teach this in little league, just low IQ stuff
Umps have made a hash of it this series but the better team still won.
People really have zero idea how difficult it is to umpire. It happens so fast. Go umpire your local little league game and see how difficult it is. Just play ball. Instant replay has ruined all sports
Lots of jobs are hard. Lots of people are good at difficult jobs. Stop complaining and do better.
So… can’t review something that is blatantly objective, because you call it subjective??? Weird rule!
It's a good thing the Astros ended up wining the game.
I agree I don’t think it hit him either, good call ump!
These umps are horrible and honestly getting worse. Now they are bringing up umps that can't even get an easy call like this correct. And the player is the one that gets disciplined. The umps have absolutely nothing happen and they can continue blowing calls left and right.
I dont get it, if you have the ability to review calls... make the right call? 😅
This is where it sucks to be an umpire- thats not an easy call in real time and you can tell its not like the umpire wants to call him out, he's shaking his head as he confirms it that no one saw it hit the foot yet they get yelled at for a split second tough call thats barely even noticeable on slow motion replay.
Astros won.
My old manager told me, if the ball hits you, FALL DOWN HOLDING YOUR FOOT.
Can't see through a shoe...
"You always run out the play. He didn't and it made him look like an fool."
I literally never see players run out obvious foul balls and if the ball hit his foot, Altuve knows it's an obvious foul ball, ergo, zero reason to run it out.
The ball went off jose altuve's foot clearly and to me this is a reviewable play in my opinion even though it saids it's not a reviewable play
Gotta love when an ump fucks up and it means the player has to get ejected. How about ejecting the umps, and stripping their pay when they are this stupid?
Umps didn't tell Altuve to throw his helmet and have a little temper tantrum
@@voncornhole he wouldn’t have thrown his bat if the ump made the correct call
@@voncornholenobody told the umps to take a break from watching the game.
Adding to the difficulty it looked like it hit the bottom of his foot. that would not make the same noise
Altuve is a seasoned vet. He not gonna stand there in the box waiting to come back up if he hadn't got hit with the ball. Shoulda been obvious.

I simply don’t understand why everything isn’t reviewable. What’s the point of instant replay if you can’t review fair or foul?
The dumb part here is this is really not fair or foul but whether it hit his foot. Stupid that it falls under that. So this should be reviewable as a hbp call and needs to be fixed. The call is overturned it hit his foot therefore it is a foul ball. No reason this shouldn’t be challengeable.
I think the ball hit inside the batters box but just missing Altuve's foot. There was entirely to much bounce to Vientos , had it hit Altuve's foot I really think the ball would have been redirected
The garbage called umpires continues to amaze even with Hernandez gone.
This is really hard for PU to see. He is behind the catcher and the batter, wearing a mask.
At 1:20 - Altuve hates the results and tossed from the ballgame.
sometimes as an umpire, you need to take into account the body language of players in situations like this.
Like Derek Jeter on a HPB?
professional players will do anything if it means them gaining an advantage (this is literally the last remaining cheating Astro), you can not take player body language or reactions into account at the professional level
The ejection signals WILL be reviewed to see who got credit😊
I seriously don't get why they have to get together to discuss whether or not the ball hit the batter. My association had a simple mechanic. Whenever ANY umpire saw a batted ball hit the batter, they were to kill the play. It was then up to the HP umpire to rule whether the ball hit the batter in the box (foul ball) or whether the batter was out of the box (out). Why does MLB have to make so many things so hard?
Remind me of an x- chic i had to tell to kick bricks. Constantly accused me of cheating, when I NEVER Did.

Don't need the rules on what it is if the ball hits his foot, we all know it is a foul ball. We need a pause or a slow motion of the moment it happens because even in this video you can't tell if it hit him or not since it's at full speed.
