  • My review of the new Faber-Castell Hexo, a new aluminum fountain pen. This is a pen meant to be an EDC pen, so I've put it through the paces to see if it's up to the role.
    The Hexo is available here: amzn.to/2BP4uqh
    (CORRECTION: The nib does differ in a couple of dimensions from the Loom, though appearance and performance are quite close.)
    Faber-Castell did provide the pen for review, as well as the pens for the #giveaway.
    Rules for the Giveaway (two Faber-Castell Hexos will be given away on Friday, June 5, 2020):

    I love the look of this pen, i love original looking pens; that clip is relatively unique, the hexagonal shape is unorthodox, i'm surprised they didn't use the no breather hole style the Loom uses. God bless you too, James, thanks for being so generous!

    Hey, James! I've been following your channel since the beginning, and it's really great to see that you're getting noticed by big name companies now. I've never held a Faber Castell pen before, so I'd love for this one to be my first. Thanks for the great content! I love your channel.

    First, thank you for your gentle, positive presence. Second, I've been wanting to try a Faber-Castel pen, but the designs left me cold. This one, however, is beautiful, and I would love to have either!

    My friend sent me the link to your video because I’ve been thinking about this pen. 😂 your review just makes me want one more. I’ve heard the Faber-Castell nibs are amazing, but I know I won’t like the grip section of the Loom, so I’m happy there’s an alternative now. I am intrigued! Thanks for sharing!

    I'm very excited about this one. Weirdly enough, the only affordable F-C pen I've been interested in was, until now, the very cheap, but well-designed and very competent, School+. I was interested in a next-level pen by F-C, because I've heard nice things about their nibs, but didn't like the design on any of them - until now!

    Befor using the Lamy Safari I was unsure of the 3 sided grip. After using one it has become one of my favorites. I’d like to try the hex grip to see how that is.

    The Faber Castell firm has always made functional, high quality writing tools. They aren't particularly betting on the limited edition carrying them to profitability. To their credit they have avoided the gimmicks of Lamy and the foppishness of Montblanc. Their quality control is on a par with other Euro pens with more optimistic pricing. I think their pens are on a par with Aurora and that's saying something. Though a company better known for pencils, they took the practicality of the pencil and applied it to the pen. Pity they don't make stuff in the US anymore.

    I've tried the Loom. It is a handsome and well made pen in my opinion, but I find the grip to be a little slippery for long writing and journaling sessions. The Hex seems like a great alternative, with some good design. Thanks for the review.

  • @carloswilson977

    Hey James,
    I really enjoy these reviews! I am a fan of fountain pens and even own a couple of higher-end Montblanc’s but gravitate to great value pens, that offer a great writing experience well above the actual cost of the pen. For example, I have a TWSBI 580 which I really enjoy, but 90% of the time I ink up my TWSBI Go. It writes probably as nice as the 580, and yet it is easy to throw around, clean out, and play around with different inks. I came across your channel about a year ago and you seem to hit the nail on the head on the types of pens I am interested in and often watch to get some honest feedback. I am throwing my name in the hat.
    Keep up the good work!!

  • @NelsonFJ
    @NelsonFJ 4 роки тому +3

    I didn't know the model until now! I really liked that the design of the writing on the body, cap and clip resembles that of the felt tip pens and marker by Faber Castell (at least those sold in Brazil).
    In my opinion, it is an excellent alternative to the Lamy All Star, as it uses international standard converters and cartridges; and my experience with nibs, it couldn't be better.
    Faber Castell fountain pens are very underrated, and I don't know why.
    Here in Brazil I used to find them in stationery stores very easily, in physical stores and online, which is no longer possible; something that intrigues me since they have a factory here, and all other products are a standard for the Brazilian market. Perhaps it is because fountain pens do not sell well here, as they have become a luxury or a niche product.
    Changing the subject, I saw the bottle of Bleu Azur on your desk; what is your experience with the ink? at the beginning I found far too light and pale, mainly in fine nibs. But recently, I have been using it in broader nibs and stubs, with much better results.
    Thank you very much for the review.

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  4 роки тому +1

      My experience with the Bleu Azur has been similar. It really depends on the nib/pen. A couple of pens I used it in early on made it seem less saturated, and I shelved it for a while. I have it in a pen or two now and the ink/nib combo just works better and the ink comes across much better, more like I wanted.
      An ink with similar hues but (to my eye) better saturation is Monteverde Caribbean Blue.

    • @NelsonFJ
      @NelsonFJ 4 роки тому +2

      I ordered a bottle of Monteverde Caribbean Blue in March, after I saw a post on the Fountain pen Network. Now it's lost in some post office, somewhere. But I still hope to receive it. I am glad to know that it is more saturated. Thank you very much for the answer.

    I think that this will be a great contender for entry level pens. Nicer in the hand than the metro and consistently better writers than the Lamy Safari.
    It is not the same nib as the loom (or ambition/ondoro/emotion/essentio) but the same as in the grip/writink/neo-slim. But it is equally awesome and writes exactly the same, even if it's marginally smaller.

    • @fountainpencollection8337
      @fountainpencollection8337 4 роки тому +1

      Well no Faber Castell - Loom has a type of nib similar to the # 5 nib but without a breading hole the Faber Castel School , writink and neo-slim have a similar nibs to the one on the Herlitz ( my pen style ) fountain pens but Faber Castel grip and hexo have the new # 5 nib with breading hole and all .
      I have all and i find hexo and grip to be exaggerated wett i find the loom to be much better .

    Pleasant review as usual James, I rather like how you review pens that don’t cost stupid money and you keep your reviews simple... let the folks see and make their own mind up, yes. Well, I have a Faber Castell eMotion and its a really nice pen the only thing thats a niggle with it is the nib looks small, a bit out of proportion in my subjective opinion. The nibs on Faber Castell pens write well and the dotted patten is smart. Presumably the Hexo will accept a converter to fill from bottles??? The black pen looks very smart although pop tops are not my choice, having only 1 in my collection,,, the cap looks good with the clever design to line the hex’s up... I’ll be looking out on my suppliers site for this pen. European designs will receive more consideration from now on because feelings have changed, TWSBI will always be my favourite pen from that part of the world ( got 5 different models 🤔 )
    The Hexo looks better than the loom, the cap is out of proportion for me on the loom, so the Hexo is a better looking pen ,,, especially the black.
    You mentioned a paper / ink review ???
    The Imperial Purple looks nice you’ve got there.
    Best wishes to all PenPeople... Mind how you go.

    The Hexo looks like a nice budget-priced pen. It's nicer looking than the Lamy Al Star. I'm interested in trying one!

    Haven't had a good pen since 1981, when I bought a pilot vanishing point from mr. Fahrney. Never could use it. Had to write with soft lead for years. Boy, would I love to start journaling again. Oh, yes.

    Hi James, Thanks for another nice review, and the opportunity to win, as well. I think Faber-Castell have come out with a well-positioned pen in the Hexo. Visually, the section is very reminiscent of the Lamy Safari/AL Star.

    I really like the thought that went into the capping to keep the facets lined up, I love my Lamy Al-Star but although very functional the aesthetics of the clip don’t appeal to me but Fabre Castel seems to have checked that box on this pen
