Hi Paul, Thanks very much for taking the time to do this video. It has proved my worst fears. I bought my 66 plate Astra with 9k miles on and it has been excellent. It now has 40k on and I change the oil and filter (Dexos 2) each year. The engine has always had the 2 second rattle on start up which i accept is just oil pressure but lately has been longer and far more worrying. I was hoping to keep the car for many years. My last Vectra did 11 yrs with no issues but to need to spend over £1k on what really is a basic service item is ridiculous. Its probably a tensioner and guide kit from China. Buy cheap, buy twice or worse! It will be going.

90000 kms and zero issues with mine. I had rattling noise during the start (randomly) in the first years. No noise anymore for 2 years. The overall quality is cheap. Crappy painting, bad shock absorbers, hard steering wheel brutal acc, dangerous lane assist etc.. but still good value for price

the rattle at startup is not a problem, its just the oil pressure builds up. But I've been in the dealer service for changing batteries, and they said this year Opel released a part that keeps the oil and doesnt let flow out when you turn off the engine, so the sound will go away, but I dont know if its worth the 500€ extra cost... :D

@@taylorthrall7321 I’m using 0w20 engine oil instead of the 5w30 and it solved the problem for me. Even at the dealership they wanted to put 0w20 but later 5w30 they said… its a big debate in the internet as I read because many dealership put 0w20 as official oil others 5w30. 5w30 is dexos2 specific the 0w20 is dexos-d. @@johnnyhun1 that sounds great! I was actually have this debate with someone online too and I said I believe 0w-20 would be better and this is what he said:
"Nope. 0w-20 is thinner so when the engine is turned off, it runs back down to the sump faster, away from chain tensioner, so when you next start it there's a slight starvation of oil until the lifter pump picks up the oil to start pumping it around the engine. In turn this stretches the tensioner over time which then lets the chain end up stretching. 0w-20 is fine if you've had the recall done by VX where they fitted the gasket at the tensioner to stop the oil flowing back down when engine turned off, otherwise better with the thicker 5w-30, even in winter."

    • @johnnyhun1
      @johnnyhun1 Рік тому

@@taylorthrall7321 yea I heard that they released an extra gasket that prevents the oil flowing back when the car is turned off, but this is how it was designed and was in production/sale over 5-6 years? Because the gasket got released only 1-2 years ago. And also, due to thinner oil its picked up much faster than the 5w30. If it would be that bad I would see some sign of the damage, or the oil pressure lamp should appear, but even when it was 38 celsius outside no oil pressure light was seen. Give it a try, you can't lose too much.

24k miles, out of warranty, happened since I got the car but think I'm just more aware now that it isn't a "common characteristic" like they kept saying but as you said it's a "common problem".
Massively frustrated, unsure if its causing other parts to be damaged or if I just need the gasket, either way I'm guessing at least £500 job if I'm lucky..
How they've gotten away without doing a recall is beyond me.
Recalled over brake system failure, recalled over broken steering columns and now they want the car for a day to update the ecu to fix the "Emissions".
Had a citroen c1 before this car, could drive it into a wall and it would carry on as normal.
Thanks for sharing, would love to have knowledge and know how but I can just about change the oil myself lol.

Pros and cons of running a chain? I've heard that pros of chain are durability and torque, cons of it versus a belt is that a belt can be replaced a lot easier than a chain but given that it's a belt and could potentially snap and cause a metric f#*# ton of damage people prefer chains? Mines chain driven and sounds somewhat rattly between 2 and 3k revs until it warms up then it quietens a lot but I've also had a belt driven one which was slipping and cause damage to a shaft and either cylinder 1 or 4 been ages since. Anyway, point is, no matter what you choose you're pretty much doomed but I'd say a chain is better if the car is maintained properly AND isn't a nightmare to get to like this!

Not sure what you mean by all types, but these engines at around 130k miles will need the chain doing. Bmw also have chains that snap at around 100k sometimes.

Change with good quality oil (not GM) every 7K to 10K kilometers and you will have this engine survive till 150K or 200K with little luck. Cheap guys and those who follow the recommendation of 30K for oil change will suffer on 85K til 105K kilometers.

Hi Paul. I have the same engine. The sound in this video can be heard for 1-2 minutes after I first start it up. The sound disappears when the engine warms up. Is the sound in this video a timing chain sound? Should I change it as soon as possible? ua-cam.com/users/clipUgkxIcfL9n24aS3P8ei42dU0zlo8Tg3GYesO

Exactly like that noise? Hard to tell from a video but that doesn’t sound like a chain noise… if it is… it’s VERY bad. Did it just start making this noise or slowly get worse?

This is the worst diesel engine ever made by Opel (and not only) causing numerous problems to Astra, Insignia and Mokka owners who made the mistake to purchase relevant diesel edition (1.6 CDTi). It has become a joke even in Wikipedia (see towards the end of the page) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Medium_Diesel_engine

@@Roverturbo Good for you but the majority of people I know who own vehicles having the specific engine have different experiences. If you do a quick search in Opel/ Vauxhall forums in EU/UK you will see hundreds of similar (or much worse) stories of horror. Not to mention the fact that due to the engine's silly design you need to "sell" a kidney to have this chain replaced in some vehicles (e.g ~1500-2000 Euros for Opel Mokka 1.6 CDTi diesel models ). It must be no coincidence that once the company got acquired by Peugeot the management decided to use Peugeot's own diesel motors for all new Opel models...

@@georgechatzidakis Engine has problems when not properly maintained. You can't change oil every 30000 km, but every 15000 km maximum. And the noise is easily fixed by timing chain tensioner gasket installation which cost me 180€. My Astra has done 208000 km by now. It even has original clutch and flywheel.
