  • This film was not artificially colorized nor upscaled. It was made in original color by the Gaumont Chronochrome process.
Chronochrome used a camera which exposed three images through red, green and blue filters simultaneously. The films would be screened using a special projector which played all three frames over each other. This system was in use from around 1912 to 1920.
Despite its beautiful results, Chronochrome never became widely successful mainly because of price and practicality issues.
It is unknown how many films were made in Chronochrome, but the Gaumont-Pathé archives website lists 80+ minutes of surviving Chronochrome footage, which has unfortunately not been widely published online. gparchives.com/
Kodak bought the US Rights to Chronochrome in 1913. The only known Chrnochrome films are in the collection of the Eastman House, sent by Léon Gaumont to George Eastman probably in 1912/13.

The French certainly did more than their share of work to make photographic processes practical - or at least less clumsy and inconsistent.
Thank you for another incredible upload. 👏

So realistic the oranges actually made me crave them.

This was a kind of perfect colour before three strip technicolor in 1932.
