  • Reaction To Kummeli - Speedy ja Saku (Finnish Comedy)
This is my reaction to Kummeli - Speedy ja Saku
In this video I react to Finnish comedy from Finnish television comedy sketch show Kummeli and this one features two interesting characters (Finnish heavy metals fans?) called Speedy and Saku.
    Original Video - • Kummeli - Speedy & Sak...

The actors are actually musicians, Heikki Silvennoinen playing Speedy (dark haired one) is extremely talented blues guitarist, also used to play in progressive rock.
The whole Kummeli thing started from him being goofy in tour bus, and people finding him funny. Though he is quite opposite in real life.

The Kummeli guys are actually legitimate musicians. They wrote a few songs for the TV show that they play live on festivals as those characters.

They keep calling the beer gepardi - which means cheetah. It's just because it's quite close to keppana, another slang term for beer, which itself comes from keskikalja - middle beer, meaning the kind that has 2,8-4,7% alcohol.

NO, ITS BCS THE BEERS NAME IS GEPARDI AND IT HAS GEPARDI AS ITS LOGO, AND ITS ALCOHOL BUT NOT BEER.

Kummeli parodies heavy rockers, but they parody all musical styles and musical traditions of different countries.
It was due to the fact that three of Kummel's members are professional musicians and they had already had a music career before Kummel's TV career. Heikki Silvennoinen, or Saku in this sketch, was and is one of Finland's best rock guitarists. He had started his career in a prog band and of course knew how to parody prog as well as jazz and blues, etc., etc. When Kummeli hit his stride, Kummeli performed at festivals and other music gigs both as a band and as Kummeli's comedy characters. On the other hand, Kummel's musician members have had their own music careers in addition to their TV and film careers.
I also don't think that the music parodies annoyed even the heavy circles in Finland, because Kummeli was "equal" in their parodies and the characters were so over the top and at the same time still recognizable.

Classic Kummeli, those 2. There was one where they are trying to get a record deal and they end up getting one where the artist pays for everything. "Artisti maksaa!".

When they say "marsu" as a nickname for Marshall, marsu is guinea pig coincidentally. And when they say "gepardi", that's the word for cheetah in Finnish. And it's not booze they find, it's beer. In Finland the common beer in the stores and to drink is class III beer, 2,9...4,7% alcohol (obviously all of them are 4,6% in the shelf). It's called "keskikalja" ("middle beer") and when you twist that into nicknames it can become kolmonen (3), keskari (keskisormi, middle finger), keppana or gepardi among many others.
So imagine that this aired when I was a kid, as pre-teen I started playing guitar and rock and as a teenager I was in a metal band and grew a long hair. Can you imagine the times I've heard about these guys when my family and friends have teased me?
These characters sparked so many catchphrases that stuck in common language. Like "is it a lot or a little" or "yeah yeah, the artist will pay!" From a classic sketch where they get a record deal and don't know who that artist dude is that people talk about, but are very happy that he's paying for all their costs.
My British friend was devastated when she learned that you can't find any of Kummeli exported or translated officially.

Kummeli was a catalyst for creation of YLE merchandise shop since they advertised Kummeli T-shirts and people wanted them so YLE finally started the shop where nowadays you can buy a stuff from series etc.. they were first sold at lobby but later on they got a room and now its really big business...

This is a true classic. Still, to my money, the audition for their band and a club gig scetch is even better. They perform an original song Hän-mies (He man). 😂 Moreover, Heikki Silvennoinen's Band (the one with the black hair) Tabula Rasa is worth checking. 70s prog rock sang in Finnish. A bit Jethtro Tullish. 😅 It has not aged that well but is had some great musicians back in the day.

Yes, it's a parody of heavy metal fans. The Finnish heavy metal artists, whom the skit is making a parody of (at the stage when they were still fans), were already making a name for themselves internationally at the point the skit was made.

I actually had two friends exactly like the characters on the video. That was back in the early 90'ies. Well, not exactly, they both had dark hair and no glasses but otherwise spot on. One played (or tried to play) guitar and the other one had to take the bass because there's no band without a bass player. Anyway, there was no band and never would've been because neither of them learned to play even the basics. The way they dressed, spoke, acted and had attitude, just like the guys in the video. It's so hilarious to watch.
