  • Hi Guys, here I take the wraps off the new 2-player starter set from Warlord Games for their 2nd edition version of the Hail Caesar game.
From the Warlord Website the set consists of:
"The Caesar's Gallic Wars starter set gives you two starter forces: the barbaric Gauls and the legions of the late Roman Republic - a fantastic start to your campaign to conquer all comers and write your name in the annals of history!
    Starter set contains:
Softback A5 Hail Caesar Gamer's Edition rulebook
    Gallic Wars introductory guide
80 hard plastic Gallic Celtic Infantry
48 hard plastic Caesarian Roman Infantry
Celtic and Roman waterslide shield decals
    12 6-sided dice
    Reference sheet and casualty counters"
An excellent introduction to ancients gaming in 28mm and definitely my favourite historical rulesets... its roots going back the GW's Warmaster game... a game I thoroughly enjoyed back then and still do now.
So check it out now at your FLGS or Warlord Games direct.

I wouldn’t mind getting some historical miniatures for dioramas

So just a quick question on rules references. Is there not an appendix in the back of the book that covers the subject matter alphabetically? e.g. Moral check pg 31, 32 and 46. I mean the appendix is my go to for information reference as it is more detailed than the chapter listing at the front of the book. Then use those little coloured tags to mark out the pages for the more contentious rules or issues.

There is a rules Summary section in the back of the main Hardback rulebook... and whilst not alphabetical, its easy to flick through and find the section youre looking for. I'm not sure if that summary is in the small softback rulebook that comes in the boxed set. I think it is but don't have it on me to check right now.

How difficult is the assembly and painting for a complete novice, in your judgment?

Hi, good question... They are plastic models, not metal, which makes them a lot easier for a beginner to deal with. You will need some hobby snips to remove the pieces from the plastic sprues, a hobby scalpel type knife which will allow you to carefully scrape away any mold lines, and some plastic glue to glue the parts together. I prefer the liquid type with brush in the cap. It's not a difficult process, but will take some time, as there are a good amount of miniatures in this set, so some patience will help!

Are these rules the same as the full rule book and just printed smaller? Or are some rules missing?

Thanks for the query, the softback rules books are usually slightly trimmed down, though the core rules will all be there. But I'll double check and get back to you here.

Had a bit more time to look this over. The softback book is 140 pages in size, the Hb book is 236 pages. The sections NOT in the softback book are the detailed sections on ALL the troops types in the game, army lists, detail on Later Medieval Battles, and the Siege and Assault rules. So as said the small softback book in the starter set gets you totally into the game with forces provided therein. Which I guess wets your appetite to explore more the game can offer in other periods, and settings. If you already have models for the period, then the Hb books is probably your best bet. If you're starting Ancients for the first time and have an interest in Rome and her Gallic adversaries , then this set is definitely for you. I hope this helps?

@@kapitihobbies9360 Good to know. Makes me think I may need the hardback Black Powder rules as I only have the small rulebook for that system.

Hi, There are a mix of figures in the box, most are plastic on sprues and there’s a small number of metal figures for the commanders.
Use some hobby snips (aka side cutters) to remove the plastic figures from the sprue frames. Then use a hobby scalpel knife or mold line remover tool (I prefer a knife) to scrape (not cut) the mold lines off the models.
Once plastic pieces are trimmed and prep’d, glue them together using plastic cement… I prefer the thin type from Tamiya (green cap) with brush in the cap for easy use. Paint them, then glue them to their multi unit bases. Again using plastic cement.
The metal figures, again trim off access flash material with snips and use use some needle files to file off the models lines. If you need to glue any pieces together, use superglue. The paint them and glue on to bases, again using super glue. Use circular bases for commander ideally to distinguish them from regular troops.
There are lots of videos on how paint models in youtube. Use a spray primer first ideally. Then paint on top once primer has dried.
(I plan to do a video on painting romans shortly)
You can then base them… I did a video on basing here: ua-cam.com/video/fxeWLvyccpE/v-deo.html
      Hope this helps
      Regards
      Scott

I understand your pain. However, as shown in the video there is a graphic presentation of the armies on the back of the box that would give you a reasonable guide if you can't get any help from someone. Maybe also wonder back to the shop you purchased if from to see if they have regular contact with hobbyists that can help you and maybe bring you into the fold for gaming.
