My wife is Italian, and we discuss this stuff endlessly. I miss a lot when we're out in public because of the language barrier, but my wife, who has lived outside of Italy said that Italians have a lower level of respect for strangers than she's found in the UK or the US. So, she actually does perceive her fellow Italians as being somewhat cruel.
I'm glad you called out the conflict between the Italian desire to be perceived as individuals and the strong cultural norms (and la bella figura).

In my experience Italians will never stand up or raise their voice when someone needs help. I was travelling in a bus with my wife and infant daughter and I have bought two tickets which I had already shown to the driver before entering. 5 minutes into our journey, the bus driver yells at us and demands two extra tickets, one for my infant daughter and another for the baby carriage. He even threatens to throw us out and call the police. A non-italian person informed us and the driver that no tickets are needed for children and for baby carriages. The driver then called someone on the phone and then resumed the journey without saying anything else.
I was more angry at Italian passengers than the driver because the driver might be new to his job and an idiot but other passengers could have supported us and helped us instead we were helped by another fellow foreigner.

It's not really defensible. That sense of "belonging" (also known as groupthink) is toxic and needs to end. A society where it's normal to talk **** behind people's back because they're "weird", out of the ordinary, because they don't conform to the cult's rituals, is an intolerant society that causes suffering to those that don't fit in

Lived in Italy for 2 years (mainly in the south but also in Milan) and one thing that surprised me was the lack of customer service. In you're in a restaurant in America and the waitress brings you the wrong food or it comes late, they'll apologise whereas in Italy you'd be met with a "tough shit" expression. A lot of the people I saw at work whether receptionists, cafe staff, office workers all seemed to have this blunt, unfriendly attitude.... Hello! First, you are so adorable and I've enjoyed watching your videos. My family and I traveled to Rome last year...it was such an amazing trip and by far my favorite city in Europe. I will say that Romans were AWFUL to my 14 year old son who uses a wheelchair. It made my son feel embarrassed about his disability and caused such family stress. The city is extremely difficult to navigate due to the ancient streets but the lack of help or compassion was dreadful. Romans should be proud of their culture, history and heritage BUT the "mean" spirit was hurtful.

We live like in a jungle, we seem uncivilized, and we are disorganized ... I'm not amazed by Michelle's comment, and I'm Roman ... xD
We are emotional people, so we show our flaws openly ...
I can understand that for a foreigner this country can scare at the first impact ...
All this is part of our chaotic and free nature, we love and hate (even our country) ... I assure you that among many random people you will always find an Italian ready to help you ...
I have always thought that we are so different(just my opinion) because of our culture, which makes us understand that all that surrounds us is only in passing and what remains is the spirit of man.
next time you come with an armed guard and decided on the destinations and you will find our country much more pleasant ahaha joke...
You have the understanding of a Roman, I hope this will forgive us a little ... see you! =)

I am not the best in grammar but these hints will make your English a bit smoother. Instead of saying "if you want to see more of this cultural things explained" say "if you want me to explain more of these cultural things" or say "if you want to see me make more videos explaining cultural things ". There are a few more ways to say it but those are a couple examples.
Also, not "I explain you" instead say "I will explain 'to you' ", or "I am going to explain to you" or I want to explain to you about my culture" or Now that I have explained to you about my culture click 'like' if you want to see more videos like this one.
Saying "I explain 'you' " is not correct in any sentence. Using 'to you' means you are explaining something 'to' me because you can't explain 'me' but you can explain culture 'to' me.
Normally I would not correct grammar on a video but doing so seems to fit with the theme of the video.

Cmq brava... bel video!

  • @FeliciaFledi

I find these videos so interesting. I'm an Italian American. My grandfather was full Italian, but he left my mom when she was 8, so we never got to know much of our Italian family, but I have always been naturally attracted to Italian decor and art. It's weird. I'll pick up something I like and it's very often something that was Made in Italy It's become a bit of a joke to see if I can pick the piece that's Italian when we go places and I'm pretty good at it. So, when I see these things about Italians and it clicks with me that I'm exactly the same way, it's fun to see my DNA plays a part even if I didn't learn these ways from someone in my family.
For example, until a few years ago, I'd never heard that talking with your hands was an Italian thing, but that gave me a laugh. Even when I'm on the phone and people can't see me, I am always making hand gestures that explain what I'm saying. I don't often even realize I do it, but occasionally I catch myself and it gives me a laugh. The speaking about abnormal things is also me. I tell people they might not like it when I do it, but it lets them know I will always give an honest opinion. If it looks great, I gush on about hiw nice it is, but if it looks bad, I'll point that out, too. I am very passionate about anything I'm feeling, regardless of what it is. I've been known to tell my kids or my husband that something they're wearing looks awful on them. I'm not at all shy about it. I wouldn't walk up to a stranger and do that, but my sister and I certainly exchange looks if we see someone looking ridiculous. It gives us a smile and we are both very expressive, so we can just look at each other and have that conversation without saying a word. You get plenty of chances to practice that living in the Southern US. LOL. If you think socks and sandals are a major fashion don't, try a trip to Wal-Mart in Arkansas or Memphis, Tennessee. Wow, will you have things to talk about! :-D
From your fashion video, I do want to know what is wrong with my white socks. Lol. I would NEVER wear them with sandals (that is truly awful), but I do wear them with my Nike's (sneakers or tennis shoes, depending on what you call them, I guess that's trainers). I'd never wear the kind that stretch up your leg, we call those knee socks. They're awful! I wear crew socks, which do show over the ankle, but we scrunch them down, we don't wear them smooth up the leg. I wish I knew better what you meant by sports socks. Some of it gets lost in translation, I suppose. I guess maybe it's a good thing that I only wear jeans now, so my socks won't show. I used to love wearing shorts and skirts, but I got vitiligo about 15 years ago and over about 10 years, it gradually turned my Italian Olive skin solid white. :'-( I've still got the dark brown hair and the Veglio nose (Just praying I don't develop my aunt's Giacosa butt, God help me), but otherwise, you'd never know I was an Italian with this ghostly white skin. I burn so easily now, I have to stick to long jeans. Guess the sock thing doesn't matter much, but I'm still curious. Like you said, we have an inquisitive nature. :-)

Haven’t visited Italy yet, but from the video I would assume she is describing a county that hasn’t many diversified cultures. Japanese, Chinese, portions of Africa have similar lack of diversification. Modern peoples assume there is value in diversified cultures, because there are beautiful differences to enjoy. There is also a beauty to the sameness. And cultural morals are kept better. Society gets along better, usually less violence.
I look at the question of diversified cultures from a distance, as an observer. I’m not proposing either is somehow superior.

Well lets just say Italians are very expressive and dare I say, to some degree, collective. So they would process it just like that. Which is very cool? On the opposite side of the expressiveness and collectiveness spectrum, such as Americans, we do it too-just bit differently, mostly by writing. Additionally, like one of your fans mention, Asian people tend to be respectful, to the point that we'd take our footwear off, as we think this is one of the highest form of respect (when going to someone's abode). In fact, youre very welcome as to virtually introduce us to your ways of life. He/she just needs to grow more skin 😂-

In fact the Puglia region is known by other Italians on the mainland as being people who are mean. Sicily also. Here in New York there was a saying that's some Italians love their kids to death or they beat the crap out of them and their wives. It was a common thing for husbands to beat up their wives and kids, let's be honest. And like the French have mistresses. I must be part Italian then, because I was criticizing the hell out of Asian behaviors! LOL
Then again, us Polea are also very direct. One thing I've noticed that seems to be common across Europe, is hotel, shop and restaurant staff aren't required to be nice to their customers, like in the US. The notion of, "The customer is always right", doesn't exist in Europe. However, you can't really make an excuse for Italians scamming tourists. My friend said one guy didn't give him change in Rome, another guy at the Coliseum saw that he was an American and didn't give his Belgian girlfriend a discount, even though she had an EU student ID and was entitled to one. He also said they were having lunch in Venice, and a band they didn't ask for came over and started playing, then demanded money from them. I also heard it's common for restaurants to serve you a bunch of food you didn't order, then charge you for it even if you didn't even touch it.

@@readlwrm846 I don't think he sayed something mean, he just sayed that Italians aren't mean, (i'm Italian and i'm not mean) and i don't think he sayed something not nice just by saying "we aren't mean we just tell how it is!" Do you see any bad word? Any inappropriate content? Any violent words? Come on...

You don't tell it how it is, you tell it how you *think* it is, there's a difference.
Btw anyone can insult italians and justify it as "just telling it how it is".

yeah I think you shouldn't worry about comments too much. you obviously have only the best intentions in your videos and its impossible to make everyone happy because we all come from different cultures with their own cultural norms. The barefoot in a temple thing is an example....in many cultures it would be considered an insult to go into a temple while wearing shoes ..moreso than in some cultures in which you don't even go inside a persons home while wearing shoes.
there are so many different cultures so there is no way to understand them all.
that being said, if you're going to visit a new place its a good idea to put some small effort into understanding the cultural norms for that place

this is only an observation.... but when you started speaking I was sure that you are possibly Irish.... but then I heard what I perceived to be an Italian accent ..... and then I thought that you might be one of those and living in the other long enough to have a perfect half-and-half accent, or maybe you`re both and spend a lot of time in both places.
    How wrong am I? :D
