Yeah wtf is wrong with us? 😂 The worst is, that this is a gateway drug. Thanks to this other true crime channels are popping up in my feed and I'm binging them. Just why? Idk too much time 😂
Simon “I’m going to do true crime” Also Simon “I’m not going to tell you all of this persons crimes, or how they did them. Because it’s too gruesome, and I don’t think I should tell you.”
One reason this is the main true crime show I listen to is because Simon does not encourage the gruesome illustrations and avoids any supernatural explanations. I truly appreciate that and am happy to here they will be going "more CSI" type feel.
I also appreciate how he doesn’t insert religion into it. There’s one TCYT I have issue with who says “by the grace of God” and “divine intervention” are what brought good things to the case. And she tends to be super dismissive about mental health of the perpetrator while being massively compassionate to a victim with the same disorder.
I so often find lots of true crime podcasts repeating the same cases over and over. I love how George finds all these stories from Hong Kong or Macau. I've never heard of any on the cases in George's scrips before. Probably because George lives in HK, researches by reading in Chinese and the stories are told in English. Keep up the good work George!
English is an official language in HK. Macau a little less but any official report or document in HK is avaliable in English. The Brits only gave it back in '97. Macau I only went 2-3 times, English is a bit less common. Definitely wasn't anything like this in 2000-2010. They cleaned the place up. Still lots of triads but you don't see that. You only know not to borrow money from them or you'll fall out of a window.
@@joshbhoy Haha yeah I was a bit young for that and the really giant casinos only came after I left. Would like to see the Venetian if I ever go back to the region. Though my last family left around 2020 so pretty unlikely.
I'm here because it's NOT murder porn; thank you to Simon and the writers for having so much empathy and compassion for the victims and their families. You guys have the most human, kind approach possible when covering tragic, terrible stories.
I agree. I love True Crime for the investigation and psychological elements, things that tend to require more empathy. That's why I hate those makeup & murder channels. When I first found True Crime UA-cam, that's all I saw, so I watched a couple, and describing that horrible violence while applying makeup always seemed so unfeeling to me that the construction of those videos unnerved me more than the cases did. I'm glad I've found channels like this that take such care to honor the VICTIMS of the crimes while still honoring the True Crime genre. It's a tough needle to thread sometimes, but Simon and Co. do it beautifully.
i feel sorry for him he really doesnt seem to enjoy CC . Perfectly reasonable but i dont like the idea of our beloved fact boi being so upset he needs to stop half way tgrough a read unless its to powder his nose ... #simonthecokehead
In CC at least I think the asides that humanize Simon more and make him relatable helps people cope with horrific content. That makes it easier for me to listen tot hte descriptions of horrifc acts because I know that someone else is similarly repelled.
was it Bb that had the running joke about all the cocaine ... Fact boy is british we dont do clean teens .. if you dont have a joint a line a diamond white or a teen pregnancy scare by 14 you become head boy ...
Maybe change from “if you liked this episode” to something like “if you appreciate the work that went into this episode”. I appreciate the work your team puts into every script!
Simon before Casual Criminalist: “Oh, yeah, a true crime channel would be loads of fun. Crime, murder, intrigue, sex, maybe even a dash of espionage once in a while if we’re lucky. Could be a spot of James Bond. That’s a bit crazy, isn’t it, the number of people who’ve played James Bond over the years? The first one I saw was …” Simon after Casual Criminalist: “Humanity was a mistake. The depravity of mankind knows no limits. Nothing is real but I wish Hell were because there are some people who truly deserve to live there for eternity. You know, that reminds me about …”
"He was trying to protect his family's livelihood." Well he bet it and had no concern at that time and then completely embarrassed the guy and said he wasn't paying what he lost. His family didn't deserve that in the least bit but he was partly responsible and wasn't a hero just trying to protect his family's livelihood.
I was waiting for this comment. Like he escalated the situation, dodged his responsibility to pay for over a year and then insulted the guy that he owed money. Like there is no way around it. I definitely agree that the rest of the family should not have been involved, but the father is not an Innocent.
Sorry to say, but yes, you are right, the problem with Chinese people is that, for one, whole family has to pay. So, for me, no hero, just a guy who played his livehood, and not think that would be a problem not paying. Kind of asking for it, It still a tragedy, but no heroes.
This wasn’t mentioned in the episode, but I read that after he killed himself, the police used his fingerprints to link him to a guy who was murdered in Hong Kong back in 1973
I’m a security officer, many of the homeless community tell me horrific stories about how they end up where they are. They are so used to being treated dismissively , they will get very detailed about traumatizing incidents that have happened to them which are unbelievable except they ring absolutely true due to my own life experiences. I appreciate you not going into great detail because I deal with victims every day and carry their stories with a sickness in my stomach and a heavy heart. The gory details don’t matter, the justice does. Thank you
I'm 50/50 on omissions. Most of the time I think it makes sense since the details become gratuitous, but sometimes it can add context to the story/psyche of the killers or emphasize how insane/detached they are.
I think the whole “brutally murdered an entire family of 10 over a gambling debt” thing should be sufficient to emphasize that this dude wasn’t exactly mentally stable… I don’t think the details are exactly necessary to “add context”
@@PFCMittens Well if you feel that that is the best part then the outrage is really on you, because that's not what The Casual Criminalist is about. The only thing it shows is that the writer hasn't figured out the channel's tone yet - pretty much exactly what Simon was talking about in the beginning.
@@richardtherichard26 whatever in the 70s and '60s that happened like every day in Vegas we need to know why this is so horrible it's like the piggy Palace murders if they didn't tell him how they got rid of the bodies it would docelized the story
Simon, you are definitely doing true crime right. Your empathy shines through, which is why this is one of my favorite channels. Keep up this great work!
I love how Simon is all, "like, I own a business--but if like somebody were to kill me and start doing my business. Eventually it would run into issues when they had to sign something" He truly understands the nuances and behaviours of his audience x3
Well Dolphins have been called "non-human persons" by scientists, and I've heard of dolphins being smuggled so that would be non-human people trafficking.
Is it now either a running gag or scavenger hunt to find all the uncensored swears? I find it hilarious and or am keeping track to save up points for that Casual Criminalist members only jacket.
Simon: We should all get fingerprinted to prevent crime. Simon 2 sentences later: Yeah if I hear someone in a brutal brawl next door I’m not calling the police.
@@macemurphy no, they aren't mutually exclusive, but it does seem to show a very limited desire for he himself to do much to prevent crime. It seems to expose that he has a very limited and passive desire to prevent crime, in which he's willing to be a good citizen and do the limited things of participating in giving up some of his own personal privacy, by adding his fingerprints to a database, but stops somewhere before being as active as placing a phone call, and complain that there sounds like a brutal crime right next door to him. Though honestly i doubt he would really be able to stop himself from placing that call, if he were truly in that situation
@@zenmeister451 No. If they fingerprinted me it would prevent zero crimes. Firstly, I don't do crimes, secondly if I decided to do one anyway it wasn't prevented, and thirdly I'd try to not leave finger prints behind.
That part is great, but I really wish he (George) would stop dehumanizing the killers in general leading up to that kind of sentiment. What makes them awful is that they are human like everyone else and still end up committing such atrocities, not that they are rabid animals or inhuman monsters and committing such slaughter. Otherwise it starts leaning too heavily into sadistic revenge porn, which isn't exactly honoring or even giving proper deference to the victims.
@@Serpent893 I can see what you're trying to say here, but I disagree. I see no problem with dehumanizing the memory of a known murderer. Yes, they were human in every sense of the word, but they were also the scum of the Earth, willing to take lives for personal gratification. They deserve to be remembered as pathetic, as trash, and as a blight upon society. Nothing more, _everything less._
@@josephschultz3301 I likewise see what you're trying to say, and partially agree. Demeaning and trivializing their ego and worth as a person is good, since it takes away the legacy most of them want to leave (though this particular guy didn't care about that), but dehumanizing makes them more like a natural disaster that someone unlucky got caught in. It takes away much of the ascribed agency and (while it's certainly not the intention of such language) begins to diminish what the victims went through by sanitizing out the meaning of murderer from the murder.
@@Serpent893 I am sorry that we disagree on what appears to be a fundamental level here, but at the same time I'm happy to see that we do so in a civil and understanding way. Thank you for that.
Yep , and yet George gets the blame , while the narrator spurgs unwanted , bit of info linked by anyone/ thing he’s experienced but nothing relevant , or adding value to the story . This is the worst video documenting or ‘casual detecting ‘ Self endulgent , in appropriate prattle about his travels 30/40 years after the horrendous act . I have never had the misfortune of having to listen to such a detached and unempathic gable of wordsand ffs , Just because he’d screwed up and read the script twice , did not mean we had to suffer that experience too , he sped through pertinent information , One doesn’t have to be promoting gore , by just saying what you ending up saying , just take all the explanation of how you feel and why you saying what your saying l don’t care . You can describe , he mutilated them , he tortured them , and yes if he’d sexually abused them , you can mention it , allow us to have our own responses . These points matter . Was it just literally down to someone sticking to their word , and the societal Norms at that time , obviously very different , the fact he’d opened up for business straight away ? So much you could have delved into . But no we’d much rather hear about yo7 missing drinking ya beers on the balcony , and I hung in there , but he got worse , by the end just gallop8ng through the script , cause that doesn’t matter, saying yo7 series doer and those type of people who would indulge in it , Then proceed to relish all the violence done to the murderer , wth the maniacal grin . Be consistent or please stop doing whatever made you act like a complete noddy all the way through . Then slating his criminality status , Obviously as it worked for nearly a year . So the fact you deal with yr mortagage online , really by now , you are over the horrific story and just on a wild ramble . The only reason I tried to hang in as long as possible to see if justice was served and by keeping him as background noise while I waited Luckily found a source , so didn’t need to learn Chinese , but now I wish I had at least tried I may know something useful Example I’m sorry , ‘this man does not know what he does or says ‘. To anyone effected by this now still living . If he just stayed n script , but no , is the cocaine good in Prague ?
I love how he’s genuinely telling his opinion about the shoes and gets tripped up when he reads the add script telling us they are great because he already said that 😂
Hi Simon! Love your channel! A serial killer has cool down periods between their murders, a mass murder is when several people are killed at once, or in one incident with no real time between the murders.
Yes Simon, you are doing a crime show justice. 👏 I hope you truly see the value of telling these difficult stories the way you are doing. As well as the values you are encouraging (which YES IS a good thing). And ignore anyone that tries to tell you otherwise they truly are not worth your time.
More CSI and less Saw is exactly the vibe that got me into the Casual Criminalist, I enjoy the mystery novel investigatory vibe episodes. A little gnarly detail goes a long way in my opinion, just enough to give that uncomfortable-giggle-shudder kind of horrified response. I'm glad you openly spoke about a course correction back to the earlier tone. After the Monster of Andes episode I was worried the show was no longer gonna be something I could enjoy.
As great as it is that Simon and the team did put in the effort to rerecord/write it, I think it is a bit of a shame to miss out on "first reaction Simon" for this one. EDIT: I wrote this before seeing the full episode and wanted to clear something. This was NOT about them leaving out the more brutal and gorey stuff and only about missing out on Simons genuine and first impression.
As far as noticing your neighbors if they go missing I think its just as we get more advanced with our technology we think more globally. Growing up my mom and I knew like most of our neighbors on the block I was friends with the neighborhood kids, we went to cook outs that neighbors held. This was all in the era of dial up internet and no cell phones. Talking to friends that moved away was a long charge, it happened so infrequently I would literally write down things I would want to cover to catch them up on stuff and need to find replacement friends once someone moved away. Now its like oh my buddy moved 1000 miles away? Fuck it I'll still text him daily, I can hang out playing Xbox or any other console with them.
Yes indeed, there was a beauty to that world as there is a beauty to the new one. There was a beauty to being able to move to a new city and just reinvent yourself in a way that is not so possible anymore, with many invisible ties to ones past that keep a continuity anywhere one goes, but it is also beautiful to be in touch with friends of the past and still have their beautiful humor brighten one's day no matter where the winds have blown each of you
Yeah, I love your asides. It's such dark topics, so it helps break it up a bit. I have to study topics like this as part of my career. It's not pleasant, but someone has to do it. I appreciate that you explained the recording failure, explained the rewrite, and explained the "why?". Damn fine episode.
"Man, I sure am glad we're going to all be in the break room enjoying our lunches at noon, today!" "Absolutely, fellow guard! I am glad that we are loudly discussing this unremarkable fact here in the prison yard!" "Don't forget to make sure all the cells are locked before we do, though, especially cell # 12!" "# 12?! Isn't that the one with the guy who murdered an entire family?!" "Yes, indeed it is! It is very important that his cell is DEFINITELY locked while we are at lunch, or else unsupervised prisoners might attack him!"
Callum, Jenn, Daniel, George and "Factboy" Aka "WhistleBoy" aka "Big Brain" Aka Simon, create an awesome team. Been listening for months down in Austin, Texas. This channel has been my favorite out of all of them because of your personality and asides. Everything is fantastic, the scripts with their amazing narratives and descriptions.Plus, I love the way Jenn throws "shade" in her edits. Everything is magnificent. Keep up the good work
I have 3 children, ages 11, 9 & 6 and I appreciate that you glossed over the details of the murders and disposal. My worst fear is for something horrible to happen to them and I don’t need details to add to those fears thanks. XO
I'm so glad Simon prefers this channel to be more murder mystery and the investigation versus murder p*rn. There is a small part of me that is curious about how and what exactly happened what parts of it because I am an insanely curious person, but the part of me that really wants to stay sane is very very glad that I don't have to hear those things. Simon and his writers do a pretty good job of walking the line between enough details to get the idea of how horrific a criminal the person was and also respecting the victims and their privacy.
Simon, love the sideline stories. We all would do that just you do, the ones who don't admit are not important. Thank you for saving us the gruesome side of evil.
@@deborah6100 There's a difference between doing true crime stories and straight up gore porn. It's not necessary to tell every detail about murders and how every second of an innocent person's death was like. Although it's interesting to hear these true stories, not liking certain aspects of it like the details of people being chopped up is honestly normal. I enjoy listening to true crime but it's not something to be taken in constantly since it is heavy stuff and can really weigh on people's mind.
@@blakelopez6309 The biggest selling point in true crime is all the grizzly details, it is what makes the stories captivating, and it allows me to rub one out while I listen to Simon describe people getting tortured to death.
I completely respect you for not going into the details. I love the style of the show, and I don't want you to get burnt out.
Simon, you would be interested to know that a great deal of California coastline is reclaimed from the sea. Only they didn't use sand. After the great California Earthquake of 1906, they just took debris and mashed it along the coastline and then put dirt on it and built more buildings on it. It should be noted that no one really sifted through the debris so a lot of bodies were mashed in.
...you know the California coastline is a lot bigger than just the San Francisco Bay Area, right? Like, a lot bigger. San Francisco is a nine-hour drive away from Los Angeles. Why are people upvoting this.
As a nurse from the US I did a telephonic nursing job where I had to be licensed in all 50 states which all require a full set of fingerprints and both my parents have done genetic genealogy so I just don't commit crimes because 1. I don't want to 2. If I did try a life of crime I'd be soooo busted soooo fast it wouldn't be worth it lol
As an American, I often think of how they fingerprinted all the kids in the 80s and 90s in case we got kidnapped. I've always wondered if those were accessible to police when searching finger prints.
Thank you Simon for pointing out so eloquently the hypocrisy of the way human trafficking is overlooked yet people loose their lives drug smuggling. The war on drugs is a war on the poor. 47:00 Serial killer implies that you're killing a few at a time over multiple instances. Mass murderer implies that you killed a larger number in one (or maybe a few) instances.
Spree killers lack the cooling off period the serial killers and don’t resume normal life between killings, also don’t engage in behaviors like stalking that serial killers do. (Think tampa shooter) Serial killers kill multiple people over a period of time for and have an MO of sorts, have varying lengths of cooling off period between kills, engage in other behaviors in regards to victims leading up to killing, and resume a normal life in cooling off periods. (Think Ted Bundy) Mass murder is killing a group of people in one go, usually not pre-meditated, but it can be. Mass murderers are less likely to become repeat offenders compared to the previous two categories, but they still sometimes do. (Think the case covered in this video) Genocide is much much larger scale and impersonal. (think carpet bombing in war.)
@@rinpaisys Carpet bombing isn’t genocide because it’s (usually) indiscriminate. Genocide is killing people of a specific group, usually ethnic, racial, or religious
Gore or no gore… we know what we signed up for when we clicked to hear about a crime that involved murder. If it’s too much for some or not enough for others… it’s a personal problem. When we choose to click on the tile, we already know we’re in for a wild ride. Cold facts are often unpleasant, but it is what it is. Anyone who would find anything on this channel ‘pleasant’ is likely a future candidate to be featured in one of these stories, @The Casual Criminalist. Frankly, I just thank all of you for taking the time to research and film these episodes. Many of these cases I have never heard of (and likely never would), especially those in countries outside of my own. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication!
we signed up for CASUAL criminalist ( horrible crimes diluted with dark humor, just enough details to keep the historical accuracy) , not murder porn galore ( like the Hello Kitty murder). There is a huge objective ( not subjective) difference between the two and the latter is also usually classified as " pathological".
@Donval Harris I'm an over the road truck driver and listen to this for hours on end. Day after day. It's wonderfully entertaining and engaging. Prety much all of Simon's channels are great, but Casual Criminalist is easily by far my favorite.
In this case we're dealing with a mass murderer rather than a serial killer. The magic number in both is 3, but a serial killer spaces the murders out over time. A mass murderer kills all of their victims at a single location in a short period of time. There's also the spree killer, which falls somewhere between the other two. The magic number for that is also 3.
I really appreciate the work you all put into educating us about the crime, reminding us about the humanity involved, and giving a voice to the victims. You all are a really talented and dedicated team that, imho, always does their best to make sure it's NOT murder porn. The writing, edit, and narration all work shamlessly together in painting a story that has absolute respect for the victims first and foremost.
Simon u are great, u are calming and funny to listen to and we appreciate you dont include those gory details even tho we love true crime, thankyou for all your hard work!
Simon, we love your tangents and personal stories! Personally, I'm very happy that you've chosen to exclude the horrifically gory details and this side of evil. Some of these have been incredibly rough.. I hope you and the whole team take care of yourselves after the particularly rough ones! I love all of your channels. Well done, Simon and team! 😊❤
I deeply, deeply appreciate that you and George revised this script to as you said go more CSI than Saw. I do appreciate that Casual Criminalist like my other fave true crime creators shows intense respect to the victims.
Showing respect for the victims is hella overhyped, I wish he went into graphic detail, with no regard for the victim's feelings. Cuz at the end of the day, that nigga dead and they don't give a shit how you describe their brutal death.🙃
@@d_clarence6174 100% agree! Simon, I love the format of Casual Criminalist. The respect to the victims, the fact that you're human about gore, and most importantly your tangents, all make for a great viewing and listening experience. Kudos to your writers and Jen, too!!
No no, Simon, you're right. Human smuggling far exceeds drug smuggling in terms of abominable actions taken against another. Its up there with rape, murder, and enslavement. I'm all with you on that.
Its not up there, It basically encompasses all three of those things into one. I doubt many people make it out alive smh. Its absolutely worse than drug smuggling.
I don’t know how far back you read comments, but both Simon’s and George’s approach and message is perfect IMO. I will only say that after so many injustices in my own life and my loved ones’ lives, I watch crime shows so I can hopefully experience justice in some small way, vicariously. It helps me emotionally, believe it or not. Thanks, gentlemen, all the writers, and Jen, for this. Love all the writers, and everyone who makes it possible. ❤
Serial killer is someone who has killed three or more people in separate, unrelated incidents over a significant span of time. Mass murderer is someone who killed their victims mostly all at once. A spree killer is someone who's killed people similar to a serial killer, but in a much shorter time span- like a couple of days. The categories are not mutually exclusive.
@UnknownError 827 I agree. Although I doubt he would do that on purpose. I think he tries to keep things as short as possible so he can spend more time at home and see his family and stuff.
I'm hear from his Brain Blaze channel... which is a bit lower energy these days--what with him injuring his bionic ass for our amusement less and no where near as much screaming about cocaine to somebody named Peter (allegedly)
35:30 I respect that choice. As a true crime consumer, I have stumbled across details that haunt me years after learning them. No one wants that. No sane person wants that. Thank you for your discretion.
The beer bottle caused the father (Lin) to back up, but Lin didn't realize his seven year old was petrified and in reach of the killer (Huang) until it was too late. Huang grabbed the child and held him basically at 'knife point' to get the mother in law - then wife when her mother couldn't do it - to tie up the others and gag them. If the seven year old had been able to retreat with the family, it's a lot more likely that Lin would have been able to overwhelm and chase off Huang. While it's not detailed, I'm sure that Huang didn't untie anyone while he killed them.
I love that you have standards for how detailed you are willing to get. I mean, discussing the crimes and bringing them to light, that's a good thing. Justice and recognition, right. But as you said, murder porn is something altogether different. Trying to balance that out and have a decent show, well, it's something you and your team do admirably. Thanks for all the work ya'll put into it.
Wow, how very, very awful. 💔 I had never heard of this tragic case before... I'm very glad to have heard the "tamer version" second version, and not the original. The images that I have in my mind of what that family went thru are already terrible enough. (As always, a wonderfully written script, and a fabulous narration by Simon...I love this Channel!! 💕)
We’ll you’ll be happy to know I broke down and succumbed to advertising and bought my first Vessis. I love the way they felt, but six months to go through the same shoes twice, no bueno! We’ll try these. Hope they’re comfy because I’m a kinder teacher. I’m believing in you Simon!!!!
Simon, I’m totally with you on the neighbor thing - I don’t know mine well and if they were to be gone randomly, I probably wouldn’t call police either because I’d assume they moved or something 😂
In my last apartment, they sent someone from the power company around to convince us all to switch to some green energy source (It was something they needed literally everyone to sign off on). The guy made some small talk and asked how long I'd been living there. When I told him 8 years, he was like "Wow, that's the longest of anyone I've talked to so far!" And I'm like, I'll take your word for it man, I have no reason to interact with any of these people. And then I moved out six months later.
I had a horrible awful neighbor. So awful a judge said fine she would fine me for his numerous/almost daily noise complaints on my dogs "barking" but ordered him to anger management and put in a restraining order. Do you know how much if an a hole to have to be for a judge to assign a restraining order before someone asks for it? Anyway, when he didn't shine his light into my kitchen one morning to annoy me while making coffee and I didn't see his car move or the lights change in his house, I called the police for a well check. He had had a stroke but was alive. Not sure if I would notice or call in about my nicer more busy neighbors.
Yeah I live in student housing and I honestly have no clue who lives in the studio next to me. Given how lenient they are on payments in fairly sure it'd take months for anyone to notice if somebody dies

So many non-drinking and non-gambling stuff to do in Las Vegas. Just walking through the hotels and seeing all the little attractions and special interest things was a lot of fun. I highly recommend the Mob Museum and the Ethel M factory (where they sell so many types of M&Ms)
The whole questioning morality thing. I put it this way. The reason I'm generally against police brutality or prison beatings is because I don't want those to happen to INNOCENT people who get caught up somehow. There are sadly a ton of cases of innocent people being either intentionally framed, or cops being too caught up on who they want to have done it, and an innocent persons life is destroyed. In cases such at this, where we know for a pretty objective fact this is the person who actually did a horrible brutal crime? Yeah, I wish he'd have fallen down and hit his head on the table more times. My desire to protect innocents is greater than my desire to punish the guilty. But my desire to punish the guilty is absolutely still there.

I always loved true crime and the Crime and Investigation channel and stuff like that...but I can see why some people refuse to touch certain cases. Horrifying in a different way...how some murder is just spicy enough to be entertaining and put on most TV cable packages and some are too ghastly and fall into obscurity. Which is worse though? The ideal is that we'd hear of neither but the fact that there is sliding scale of 'watchable' killing is disturbing in its own right.
Simon seems like the type to say something if they're getting to him. He did tell George to try and go easy when he needed to re-record afterall. Hopefully that's the case, he does a lot of work recording some messed up cases.
I went on a trip to Portugal for a week with my Dad and it was an amazing and beautiful country, I went to Fadima, beautiful churches ⛪ one Giant Church/Museum and went to Cathedrals ⛪ one was 600 years old and another was 1200 years old, and saw Castles 🏰. Beautiful plant life Olive Trees & Stations of The Cross Garden. I also saw a Holy Cliff where a Saint was saved from falling by an Angel 😇 and Portugal was the first time I saw the Ocean 🌊 and swam in it was bright blue 🔵 too. Portugal is a beautiful country.
As someone who wanted to be a medical examiner as a kid, and who doesn't blink at gruesome photos, I think you're doing true crime right by telling people not to go looking for the ones from this case. These people were horribly mutilated and none of us need that imprinted on our brains. Thanks for another great show.
Nah, time stamps are a better option for people wanting a PG experience . It's like putting a safe room in a haunted house -- come onnnnn, we are all here expecting what's been censored... As someone who shared the predilection and ruined my young brain on actual gore exploitation sites, this show is a far cry from "gruesome photos". It's as intrinsic as sex to a degree, having a natural curiosity to want to explore and illuminate the darkest facets of human mortality. Not that I want Simon to endure anything he'd be uncomfortable with, it just sucks to have to track a more detailed study of this elsewhere when I really prefer his narrations.
@@gaba_goblin I'm not looking for a PG experience, nor are the other people who watch this channel. Simon has recognized a line he doesn't want to cross and so he doesn't. I happen to agree with him. You happen not to. That's all it is.
@@KarynHill agree to disagree, indeed. I fully understand and agree with HIM not going through the detail for his own wellbeing and beneficently. It just sucks for a portion of us. Maybe would've been better not to divulge the editing in the first place 🤷🏻
@@gaba_goblin That might have ended up being the better bet, but I'm sure he wasn't thinking anyone would feel bothered by it. I find it easy in this case to agree to disagree because I'm often the one wanting to see the photos. Most people don't, though. Or they think they do and then realize they don't. In this case, I'm positive I don't want to see the mutilated bodies of little children. Just a big no here for me. And if it's a yes for you, I'm glad the photos exist somewhere online so you can see them.
@@KarynHill never would I expect nor request photos on a crime podcast (on YT of all places) for my own reasons, so that's an easy part for me to agree with you on, but to hold back on the script because of the details... It does do injustice to this genre, as Simon himself suggested, when compared to his other podcasts. I fully believe it's for the children and understand that again, I think it was more for him than anyone else -- I have kids of my own and that's when I stopped being capable of stomaching crime scene photography etc. So I'm really just referring to the script and verbal details. But it isn't for everyone, and that doesn't hurt me any, just frustrates lol
Thank you for the reason why we listen - to acknowledge the victims and those involved in solving cases. Not the perpetrators. I'm pleased you re-recorded it.
Same. I am delighted with how you handled it. Like you said, Simon, I am interested in the cases but not the truly gory details that some shows amplify.
On gory details in true crime documentaries - my first book on serial killers (borrowed from my father when I was about 13) contained the details of one of Andrei Chikatilo's murders that I could have spent my entire life NOT KNOWING instead of cringing every time I think of it, 30 years later. Good call IMO.
Thanks for shortening all the gorey stuff! Seems like George is slowly getting into the swing of casual criminalist. I really don't care to know every bloody detail of this families horrible fate.... I'm generally far more interested in the context of the crime and how the perpetrator was ultimately captured. Also Simon's anecdotes are like the best thing about this show
Agreed! It makes me lose respect for channels when they relish in the gritty details & not the storyline. It comes off as torture porn & exploiting the victims horrible plight... The story & lessons are engaging as they are.
I think I mentioned this before, but his anecdotes and tangents make it feel as though I'm not just listening to a podcast but as though I'm just sitting with an old friend discussing a topic of interest. Very similar feeling to when Simon was talking about sitting on that balcony just relaxing whilst drinking that Chinese beer.

Yes! I am interested in learning the stories, but I don't need the nightmares.
I love Simon's tangents and asides. I actually prefer that over his more serious channels. He let's his personality shine through more in BB and CC.

Kind of asking for it,
It still a tragedy, but no heroes.

Absolutely!
This wasn’t mentioned in the episode, but I read that after he killed himself, the police used his fingerprints to link him to a guy who was murdered in Hong Kong back in 1973
😮

Well said, George. Well said.
This is the worst video documenting or ‘casual detecting ‘
Self endulgent , in appropriate prattle about his travels 30/40 years after the horrendous act .
I have never had the misfortune of having to listen to such a detached and unempathic gable of wordsand ffs ,
Just because he’d screwed up and read the script twice , did not mean we had to suffer that experience too , he sped through pertinent information ,
One doesn’t have to be promoting gore , by just saying what you ending up saying , just take all the explanation of how you feel and why you saying what your saying l don’t care .
But no we’d much rather hear about yo7 missing drinking ya beers on the balcony , and I hung in there , but he got worse , by the end just gallop8ng through the script , cause that doesn’t matter, saying yo7 series doer and those type of people who would indulge in it ,
Then proceed to relish all the violence done to the murderer , wth the maniacal grin .
Be consistent or please stop doing whatever made you act like a complete noddy all the way through .
Then slating his criminality status ,
Obviously as it worked for nearly a year . So the fact you deal with yr mortagage online , really by now , you are over the horrific story and just on a wild ramble .
The only reason I tried to hang in as long as possible to see if justice was served and by keeping him as background noise while I waited
Luckily found a source , so didn’t need to learn Chinese , but now I wish I had at least tried
I may know something useful
Example
I’m sorry , ‘this man does not know what he does or says ‘. To anyone effected by this now still living

Simon: This has been the longest introduction ever.
Blazement Danny: Am I a joke to you?
Hi Simon! Love your channel! A serial killer has cool down periods between their murders, a mass murder is when several people are killed at once, or in one incident with no real time between the murders.
“You bellend”
As an American, I thank you for this insult. I shall now be using this 😂
Yes Simon, you are doing a crime show justice.
Well I mean, there's his brain blaze channel, but noted
Indeed but I found it funny
Even if it were it would be ok as long as you don't get off while listening. People are different.
I agree with Simon. I also love how the prison guards and prisoners team up against child killers. The unlikely partnership is just *chefs kiss*
Yep me too
"Man, I sure am glad we're going to all be in the break room enjoying our lunches at noon, today!"
"Absolutely, fellow guard! I am glad that we are loudly discussing this unremarkable fact here in the prison yard!"
"Don't forget to make sure all the cells are locked before we do, though, especially cell # 12!"
"# 12?! Isn't that the one with the guy who murdered an entire family?!"
"Yes, indeed it is! It is very important that his cell is DEFINITELY locked while we are at lunch, or else unsupervised prisoners might attack him!"
Even hardcore criminals have children and some of them don't like the idea of someone targeting them.
I mean it’s good, but sometimes people are wrongly accused, and then the treatment is awful. So I would prefer if the punishment stuck to the law.
Same here. As much as I’m all for fair justice there’s something satisfying about how people who hurt kids are treated in prison.

47:00 Serial killer implies that you're killing a few at a time over multiple instances. Mass murderer implies that you killed a larger number in one (or maybe a few) instances.
Also killing several people in different locations over a short period is a Spree Killer
Spree killers lack the cooling off period the serial killers and don’t resume normal life between killings, also don’t engage in behaviors like stalking that serial killers do. (Think tampa shooter)
Serial killers kill multiple people over a period of time for and have an MO of sorts, have varying lengths of cooling off period between kills, engage in other behaviors in regards to victims leading up to killing, and resume a normal life in cooling off periods. (Think Ted Bundy)
Mass murder is killing a group of people in one go, usually not pre-meditated, but it can be. Mass murderers are less likely to become repeat offenders compared to the previous two categories, but they still sometimes do. (Think the case covered in this video)
Genocide is much much larger scale and impersonal. (think carpet bombing in war.)
@@rinpaisys you've put a bit of thought into this. 😁
@@rinpaisys Carpet bombing isn’t genocide because it’s (usually) indiscriminate. Genocide is killing people of a specific group, usually ethnic, racial, or religious
@@rinpaisys And Serial killers can escelate. Time between kills shortening.

@@GuntherRommel My fingers are to large for this phone....as your wife can attest too...
Thanks to Simon and the whole crew. Great way to start my day
In this case we're dealing with a mass murderer rather than a serial killer. The magic number in both is 3, but a serial killer spaces the murders out over time. A mass murderer kills all of their victims at a single location in a short period of time. There's also the spree killer, which falls somewhere between the other two. The magic number for that is also 3.
Actually somebody came up with 3. there is no real conclusion how many it has to be above 1 to be titled serial killer. Common misconception.
@@herrschmidt5477 That's the number the FBI uses at any rate

I love how you read the prompts given to you by your sponsors.... it brings me so much joy!! 🙃
Yeah it's a lot more transparent, so you can tell if the sponsor is trying to pressure him to lie or exaggerate or something like a company would do.
I love that in the sponser section Simon is leaking their script to UA-camrs to market the shoes. I think it feels more authentic anyway the way Simon brought it up.
Simon not being able to read through all the full descriptions somehow gives me faith in humanity ❤️
I would rather heavily regulate drugs to free up the resources to go after human trafficking.

The categories are not mutually exclusive.
don’t worry about repeating stories mate, i have memory issues so it’s always news to me!
Simon: this has been the longest introduction ever
Yeah, It's still not long enough, I love these random rambly introductions.
@@NimhLabs i love the blaze, and i miss all the cocain references, and "am i right peters" but hes probably trying to appeal to a wider demographic.
35:30 I respect that choice. As a true crime consumer, I have stumbled across details that haunt me years after learning them. No one wants that. No sane person wants that. Thank you for your discretion.
I’m stumped by how one man with a broken bottle could overtake an entire family of 10. Wtf?!
I love all the personal information and opinions you tell . In fact more than the story.
I actually quite like Simons tangents, it provides a nice reprieve from the darker content in the episode.
I appreciate your honest humanity.
We’ll you’ll be happy to know I broke down and succumbed to advertising and bought my first Vessis. I’m just sick of the fact that my last sneakers basically disintegrated after about eight weeks because I dared to wear them outside.
If they only wanted the story, they wouldn't be HERE, Simon! We're all here for YOU to be YOU doing the most YOU things YOU can do. We love you. Stay safe, my dude.

I love Simons little sidebar stories!
Sometimes I feel bad that I love this channel so much...because it looks like some scripts really upset Simon. And I don't know if its worth it. Please be ok. You and your team
A lot more of the scripts are upsetting Simon under George than they ever did under Callum.
@@GuntherRommel I have noticed that...but to be honest some of these cases are just horrifying any way you slice it. I think it may be beyond the literary prowess of any wordsmith to downplay the sheer brutality of cases such as this and another is the Hello Kitty murder (which actively made my shoulders tense).
This was so sanitized...or did you mean the one he messed up and re-recorded?
Yeah I agree, the ones from Callum don't seem to upset him so much
Simon seems like the type to say something if they're getting to him. He did tell George to try and go easy when he needed to re-record afterall. Hopefully that's the case, he does a lot of work recording some messed up cases.

Thank you for not going into details fact boi. This story was confronting enough in itself. I appreciated you/your team editing out the details.
Thank you for being a great channel. I appreciate it's not crime or murder porn.
One of the saddest true crime stories I’ve heard was about junko furuta very very tragic story and completely awful, people can be downright evil…
Same with the Toy Box killer. Hate that it lives in my brain
Thanks for being civilized about the gory details - my nightmares don't need that! I appreciate you and George.
Bravo for leaving out the details of the killings as well of the disposal of the bodies.
