  • If you've been in any creative arts industry you share on the internet, you've most likely been copied once or twice. While there isn't a way to stop the copy cats, you CAN control how you respond. That's what we are talking about today while making this soap! Links to everything I use down below! xoxo

    I do a TON of shopping for soap supplies online and eBates lets you get rebates at nearly every major online retailer, including Amazon, eBay, and Etsy. I literally save money just by opening up a tab in my browser via their link. I have already received a check from them within the first month so I just thought I would let you guys know about this since we soap makers and DIYers buy so much online! Plus, it's free! Yippee! :D

    I was a chef with many of my own recipes that I had developed. Most chefs don't share recipes at all but I give my recipes to anyone who asks,because if I die tomorrow so does my recipes
    So sharing recipes with soap I think is extremely kind and generous

    You are the reason I make soap now. And I will always be grateful to you for that. That said, I don’t sell my soap and, though I find your designs inspirational my soaps look nothing like yours. Think of yourself as a soapy fairy godmother spreading soaping lessons to people who may otherwise never have found this thing that they now love.

    I watched you for about 3 months before attempting my first batch of Cold process. I researched for about a year and was making melt and pour the entire time. My daughter is autistic and I started making her melt and pour soaps with toys in them to keep her distracted in the tub. It worked and she let me wash her hair and body without a fit!! I opened my etsy and sell other items I've made for my family and friends and I love it. It helps me pay for groceries some months.
    You inspire me, teach me, and encourage me to continue. I thank you for that! I never try to copy and honestly don't think I could even if I tried. I look forward to watching your video every week!
    I've ran into being in the same wavelength as others many times now.

    As a new soaper... I never steal designs.... but I can think something up... run off and make it and then cut it only to find 50 other people have done it before me. LOL I got all excited a few times over a soap being all original and then found someone else did it. That was when I realized... if you grab a certain fragrance it automatically makes people think of certain colors.... then there are only so many techniques so yeah... there are always going to be similar soaps... BUT I love soaping so much I just don't care. We all inspire each other... and you most certainly are a inspiration...even though I can't pipe... I LOVEEEE watching you soap. :)

    • @pendlera2959

      Yeah, not many people will pick up a lime fragrance and color it purple, or do a charcoal soap with birthday cake fragrance. Anything that's themed (birthstones, seasons, holidays) is going to run out of variations pretty quick.

  • @thebrokeheiresscandles

    My first exposure to high top soap loaves with frosting was 35 years ago. I thought it was very innovative back then, and still do. Each soap artist has the same availability of materials to use in the form of ingredients, fragrance oils, embed molds, techniques, etc., so there will always be a lot of similarities among soap artists somewhere. Artists who are painters such as Van Gogh and Monet were both impressionist artists, with the same materials to use, but their 'look' and final product were different, yet similar. I admire all artists, all variations, both with brush and paint, soap, pen and ink, etc.

      Sandra Berger absolutely. Whenever a soaper gives out their recipe, a fan will always feel privy to make the same exact soap because she's sooo friendly and good at what she does. She has inspired so many and will always have fans do this. Me on the other hand I like to think I'm creating and making my own designs even though it's sooo many similarities out there.

    your advice on just doing you and not caring about copycats and that because they're always a step behind anyway is true in situations like yours, where you are the bigger and more known soap maker anyway, but it's a different story with for small new designers/businesses having their designs stolen by big companies (for example wish) which actively ruins your business and hinders you making money of your creations.

    • @AnoukiMorgenstern
      @AnoukiMorgenstern 5 років тому +20

      I agree with you. I'm an illustrator and it happened so many times already, that more well known people and companies stole my art. It's disheartening to see them gain all the praise and tenthousands of likes while I stay unrecognised .__.

    • @RoyaltySoaps
      @RoyaltySoaps  5 років тому +51

      As I said, I adopted this idea when I was NOT a bigger and more known soap maker. I have had my images stolen and put on Wish, eBay, Aliexpress, and many other foreign websites when I didn’t even have an Instagram, much less a following there. My outlook and advice I discussed in this video is talking about fellow small businesses and creators, not major corporations. For those, I issue DMCAs IF I find out about it.

    Pointing out that they might have thought up something similar. It's a thing that happens all the time. Once something is invented it get's "invented" again independently by someone who was unaware of the original invention or discovery of it. No one ever considers it but it is a real and actual thing that happens with everything.

    Also homemade cranberry sauce is so easy and yummy! Just cranberries and your choice of sweetener (maple syrup is our favorite) in a pot over medium heat, cooked until they burst and the sauce thickens up. You can add vanilla if you want, or orange juice or orange rind, or spices, but cranberry, sweetener, cook and stir is all you actually need!

I purchased your piping set and set out to make my first soap and although it was your recipes that came with the piping set, I tried really hard to make my design my own. It does reflect your style, but I don’t post them on UA-cam and I tell people you’re my inspiration. I now get inspiration from other soapers, but am better at coming up with my own designs. Well even though they are copying your videos, most of us watch these because YOU are doing them. I can only tolerate watching certain soap videos. Some are grating on my nerves (like silly things that just rub me wrong, like someone who speaks very immaturely/high pitched baby talk-esque), others are boring or just too long (25 minutes??? I ain't got time to watch someone soap in semi-silence when I could just do it myself), and others I just don't vibe with. I'm not much of a youtube watcher at the moment, and I already make my own soap. So really, you're the sole reason I watch your videos. And I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments about people who steal designs. They're not always in it for the passion of it/the art of it, so they often fizzle out quick when they don't make money like they thought they would, and they don't make money because they don't have that drive to do things for the sake of the love of creating. And often, they are inexperienced and unknowledgable, creating subpar products at best. The love of a craft is what fuels innovation and success, not the capability of imitation. Quite sad for them actually, because if they would have refocused the efforts they made in photoshopping or stealing images/designs, instead building their foundation in the craft, they likely would have been able to make their own designs and been more likely to eventually make money and succeed.

    I have to say your wonderful! I started making soaps about 4 years ago only because my husband was at the time in stage 4 kidney failure and had chronic dry itchy skin that was constant itching day and night and no sleep for either of us and no over the counter or prescription creams gave him the relief he needed and that I desperately needed (sleep wise) so I though OMG I have to figure this out before one of us is insane! so I started researching how to help him, and alot i read was handmade soaps, so research and research and also youtube videos (OF course yours, Yellow Cottage Soapery and Arianne and Edens Secret was my favorite, because they were informative, helpful, and detailed and god i love all 4 ladies personalitys & the beauty was also a delight to watch) to see if I could even possibly do this! I have always been artsy and crafty, but this was a new scary thing! But I gave in, and was immediately addicted. but wasnt happy with the justa a basic 3 oil soap, sooo MORE research and more research and alot of testing, i made soap like a crazed woman needing sleep! and was always tossing him something new to try... and it just became a passion, So then after helping him find relief, then it became a trial of "ok what would i want in a soap also?" because we loved it, my adult daughter and I. So I played even more over the years, as i sold soap here and there to friends and family i bought more things to try out in my soap recipe. then it expanded to lotions, conditioners and so on. And Oh and the wonderful world of bathbombs. but I just want to thank you and all the other ladies for the lovely videos and supportive advice, although I love your designs, and i do agee you cant control all and have to just let some things go. I am one that if i was going to do it I am doing my own recipe, my own designs my own everything. But anyways my point is I sold to friends for years, and family and now been doing my recipe that i am pleased with for over a year and a half, ended up selling in a lil shop here in town, but after 8 months my daughter was "MOM, You need to do this lets open a shop together!" so she does photography and I get the store front for my lovelys and all because you lovely wonderful ladies and your inspiration and encouragement and information I now have been open a month, not making huge amounts of money but it lets me do my passion and my daughter do hers and be proud of the hard work we put into it. so TY lovely ladies!! and hubby is still doing well skin wise, but on the expected path of stage 5 kidney failure and starting dialysis soon. but this passion of soaps also gives me some peace and an outlet. So in many ways I Thank you

    It's a wonderful thing to be the bigger person when it comes to sensitive subjects as this. The ones doing the copying are just trying to ride a "coat tail" to success and it doesn't work. If you are known in your craft, the public knows your style and when someone else tries to duplicate it, it just makes them look ignorant and uncreative...shame on you! I do see a certain YT'r (no names mentioned) that is constantly doing your style of soap, she is trying to build her channel. I see the resemblance but she comes NO WHERE close to having your creative edge. So keep on doing your "thang" girlie, your designs will always come out on top in the end! That particular design had been show by someone else on UA-cam years before, but never gets any credit. And that person doesn't say they invented it. People are have been making soaps all over the world using designs that many new soapers in America have just discovered. Hello, UA-cam is a recent phenomena! If you don't want people to copy you, don't show them how to do it. That may sound harsh, but that's the truth. P.S. you are unique. Nobody can take that from you. Katie, I’ve been soaping since 2002 and back then, myself and a handful of other soapers were the innovators and inspiration leaders, particularly in a VERY large, well known soaping forum (because that’s all we had back then, UA-cam didn’t yet exist). EVERYONE, and I mean literally everyone copied all of us, blatantly stealing recipes , photos and techniques that we were all sharing within the forum, never giving credit where it was due. 2 products in particular back then were in hot demand by all the newbies with dollar signs in their eyes........emulsified sugar scrub and solid shampoo bars. I still have the threads saved from those posts in the forum where it is clear and evident who the original formulators were. My point in bringing this up after just recently hearing about and looking you up is this: YOU are the innovator now. YOU are the trend setter now. YOU are the one who inspires others to be creative. The work you do is AMAZING! Haters gonna hate! Don’t let ANYONE harsh your mellow or distract you from doing you. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but they will never be YOU! That advice you were given at 17 was very bad advice and also not based in legal reality. Soap would be classified as a utilitarian item and not covered by copyright automatically. You "could" get a design patent but then that is expensive and time-consuming. Then you have the legal expense of enforcing it.
    This is a trap many most female entrepreneurs fall into. Concentrating on hunting people down in a very mean girl way without any legal standing behind it. It will only hurt you in the long run. It gives you a bad rep and it rots your creative soul.
    This has been my experience from the fashion industry
