My favorite Queensryche album...it's the story of Nikki, a junky recruited into an underground anarchist movement to be an assassin. He befriends and falls in love with Sister Mary, sung by Pamela Moore, who is part of the movement( also a junky who brings his fix), and his only friend....things go bad.
I purchased the first Queensryche album in 83, before it was available outside the Pacific Northwest. I was 14. Still love the first 4 albums & you should check out Rage For Order next. From the 5th album on, their sound changed considerably, not bad, just different.
Live Evolution contains this whole album LIVE...and it is absolutely AMAZING....an absolute must watch!!!!

This band was way ahead of it's time, I also started listening to them right when 'The Warning' came out. Check out their album before this one, it's called "Rage For Order", it is my favorite all time album (thats saying a lot from me as I'm a huge Rush fan). The music on that album had that eerie vibe throughtout and the layering of vocals and sound effects were awesome. "Rage For Order" was another album ahead of its time as it dealt with a lot of Artificial Intelligence situations which you just now hear everyone talking about and it came out in 1996. And remember if you do not like it the first time you hear it, listen again, I almost threw the cassette out the window when I heard the first song (neue regal), it was strange at first but did become one of my favorites. Great Review. Also, if you get a chance, track down the video of them on tour playing this album in full, you will also see the female singer who is on the album. I think it is called "Operation Live Crime". Damn, just realized TwinRavens pretty much said everything I just did :(

I am close to the same boat as you. My first album was Rage, and immediately picked up the first two albums after eargasm was over. I cannot separate the first 3 albums in my heart, but if I was forced at knifepoint the best I could do is rank both Rage and Warning in 1st place, the first self-titled album in a very close 2nd place. Not to knock Operation: Mindcrime in any way of course, but Warning and Rage 'speak to me' on a level most music cannot touch.

The 83 EP was my first and I bought them in order but Rage will always be my fave. It's so different from anything they did b4 and after, and so different from what other bands were doing at the time. Amazing album start to finish. I dream in infared and London are among my favorites. The whisper is friggin killer.

You just listened to the best concept album ever. My favorite Queensryche album. It was a lot of fun sitting here and watching someone listen to it for the first time. This is Queensryche at their best. A couple things.....that was not a keyboard on I Don't Believe In Love. It was more mad guitar skills by DeGarmo. Also, listen to it again, and maybe again, and rethink who killed Mary. It was a big debate for years. The band finally answered it after Mindcrime II came out. You could cheat and google it, but see if you can figure it out. Cheers!

John, I am so sorry to just now get to thank you for doing this for me and the fans here! I am healing and hopefully get casted next week for my prosthetic leg! I'm excited I may be walking again before the end of December! I'm having cataract surgery to fix my right eye on the 18th of December and my left eye on Jan. 17th 2019 *yes, I know bro...I'm a mess, but getting fixed up!)
This album was epic back in the late 80's after I graduated high school. This whole album has a great story theme. about a young man that gets dragged into a life of crime and gets used and drugged up to be an assassin for a crime lord. The young man falls for a nun and gets caught in position where he is framed for killing Mary, the nun (the priest most likely killed her, under order of the crime lord). Ultimately the ends up explains why he ended up in a psychiatric hospital, under lock & key. Its a classic masterpiece that is now had its 30th birthday...
I'm glad you liked the album and I cant thank you enough that you did this reaction for me and your fans- it means a lot! Geoff Tate, the former lead singer here, used to have an epic voice, but he's is a sad way now and sounds bad. The other original band members split from Geoff and got Todd Del Torre- he sounds so much like Geoff,....ridiculously good voice!
I got a surprise I want to send you later this month and their new album "The Verdict" drops March 1st 2019. I want to have you check out one of the new tracks that was pre-released called "Man The Machine". Expect a request for this reaction and the upcoming album in the future bro! :-) Your friend & fan- Greg

So great that you've done the whole album. Truly a timeless masterpiece. Now you have to watch Operation: Livecrime to see it played live. I think it gives you a whole new perspective on the storyline. IMHO the greatest concept album ever. To me, the guitar on this album just sounds so CLEAN and that bass line like you mentioned, kills it. Let's not forget the incredible vocals by the one and only Geoff Tate. Really gets the emotions out there like no other. Thanks for reacting to this album, I've been waiting for someone to do OM for some time.

This is such a great album. I bought 1988 as an LP, so the idea of concept album was something more at the time. They even made a whole album long music video, which I also have on VHS! The music has stood time very well, only traw back being the recognizable sound of the late 80's and early 90's. Transistor based amplification being the new hype and everything produced sounding very electric, like the drums on this album (That snare drum. Oh, cod...). I'm not sure, but it sound like the bass on this could be played with Warvick. It's so meaty and strong. Me like! Geoff Tate was and still is unique voiced, top of the range singer.

First, this album is Amazing! So great to watch someone enjoy it for the first time! I was listening to it when it came out, still one of my fav albums of all time, and I Love A Lot of Music from many genres, this still makes top 5! If u like them, u should check out Dream Theater, from around that era, very full orchestral sound from a rock band, very nice!
So, u caught most of the story, for ur first time that's pretty good! Nicky is a young man, living in a corrupt world. Sad to say this album is timeless, bc 30 years later, not only is it still relevant, but those same corruptions are present and far worse than they were 30 yrs ago, in our present day! He's a disillusioned youth, who wants to fight back against the corruption, but has no power and no path to it! He sees a flier for this guy called the Dr, maybe even hears someone in his organization speak, soap box style, on a street corner, he goes to the address to meet this "Dr" , he's coerced and manipulated in to joining the organization, this shady underground faction, seeking to topple the current corrupt administration and replace it with their own, equally, and probably more corrupt administration, the Dr is super smarmy and the way he controls people in the organization is by getting them hooked on heroin, taking their first shot is there initiation in the organization, it makes them more pliant and willing to do his bidding! Mary is a young girl, 16 when they rescued her from prostitution, has also been manipulated and coerced into joining the organization, by the priest, who also is being manipulated and used this shady organization, preaching revolution to young disillusioned kids, so u can enslave them to ur will! Telling them they were changing the world, giving them the right rhetoric to speak, on soapboxes on the corner, to bring others to the cause, the words are meant to rile folks up, and they hit home with most of America, so they think they are making a different, but the Dr is using them all as pawns, he stays hidden in the shadows, letting the recruits do all the public speaking and be the face of "The Revolution", but it's all fake, there is no revolution, just a sick twisted fuck, calling himself the Dr, getting these kids hooked on a message of changing the power structure in this country, then he uses the drugs, then they will kill for him, they keep them high and waiting for a call to go do the bidding and handle the business of the "revolution"! Nikki and Mary cross paths early on, at the mission where she lives with the priest, both believe they are fighting for something good, and are determined to see this revolution thru! They share an instant connection, and begin their journey of falling in Love, both are hooked on heroine, and she brings him his fix from the mission on a nightly basis, however she is being banged by the priest, and anyone else the organization tells her too, but she is not sleeping with him! They get high together, talk together, dream together, but she has this misplaced loyalty to the priest, bc he's protected her and kept her alive within the organization, they tend to chew people up and spit them out, to protect the inner circle controlling this mind game/social experiment, so no one knows too much about what's happening and don't get deep enough into the nuts and bolts of it to discover it's all a fraud! So they end up dead, a crazy street junkie or in jail, cause they're set up for some crime by the organization! Nikki is not only a hitman, but also a drug runner and he did recruiting by giving street corner, soapbox speeches, This is where he first sees Mary, in the crowd, then he goes to the mission to drop off a shipment of heroin, and sees her there, this is where their friendship begins, they spend a lot of time together, doing business for the organization, they fall in Love, then shit starts getting crazy, they are starting to see that this organization is also corrupt, they no longer trust the Dr, or believe he is bringing about a positive change in the power structure of our world, and the authorities seem to be closing in, so they devise a plan in secret, that if shit goes down they will meet there and get out of town, run away together! Then, the Dr, sensing that the whole thing is crumbling around his ears, starts to cut his losses and kill all the witnesses that could implicate him in this whole conspiracy! He drops Nikki off with the drugs and instructions to kill the girl and the priest, the Dr knows he is in Love with her, and is testing him to see if he is still compliant and willing to do his bidding! He walks the street in the rain for hours, trying to figure out what to do, how to save her, but he feels trapped and they have so twisted his mind with their drugs and manipulations, he decides to kill the priest first to buy some time to think about what to do! After he kills him, and he begs for his life, he washes the blood off in the vessel of holy water in the sanctuary, then goes looking for Mary in the rectory, finds her in her room, he tells her they've sent him to kill her, and then they get high, they talk about it, they cry about it, he tells her he Loves her and he can't do it, they have sex for the first time, afterwards they activate their plan! It's about 4am now and they both leave under cover of darkness, her to go to their secret meeting place, that they think no one knows about, and him to deliver the baggied up drugs to the Dr, and hopefully kill him, if the opportunity arises to do so! He goes to see them, tells them he killed the priest, but that Mary was gone when he got there, demands the money they owe him, and tells them he wants out! They give him his money and tell him to go and wait for a call in his apt! He leaves, goes to his apt, waits for the call, then leaves once it gets dark, he goes to meet Mary, walks in, it's all dark, he calls out for her, while searching for the switch, then the light comes on and he sees her hanging on the opposite wall, arms and legs splayed open, her habit pushed aside, def had been raped, choked to death with her own rosary! This obviously fucks his head up! He thinks he is getting out and they are running away, but they had other plans, he's about to go down as their patsy and he doesn't even know it! He runs over and tries to free her, but can't he hugs her body and cries, he's angry and lost in grief, he shoots up and passes out at the scene! The organization calls the cops and sets him up to be framed for her murder, and the priest"s, and as the ringleader of this whole operation! The beginning of the album is him in the hospital, handcuffed to his cot, he was unconscious when the police arrived, so they took him to the hospital until he came out of his stupor! Eventually he goes to jail for his crimes, he mourns for Mary every minute of his sentence, years later he is released, he has been forgotten by time and society, and little if anything has changed, in fact it's decidedly worse, he has not only lost all hope, he is hard and battle weary, he walks the streets and watches how people avoid his eyes, and as he contemplates his own reflection, and reflects on his own history that has brought him here and now, he realizes he is a stranger to himself, all his memories feel like they happened in another life, to someone else, where does he go from here?! The same questions he had b4 he joined the organization, who promised to give him all the answers, to life and all it's queries, "Why am I here?" "What is the Meaning/Purpose of Life/My Life?!" They didn't give him any answers and all he has known has been a constant journey of grief, pain and suffering! Still he is left with the same questions! "Who Am I and Why Am I Here, Where is Here, What is the Point of it All?!" So at the end, he finds himself a stranger to himself, a broken man, and beginning the journey anew, to self awareness and discovery, but now numb to Love and 4evr mourning her death, simultaneously! He finally realizes he must confront his own inner demons to find peace and understanding!
It really is the greatest rock opera of all time! I have listened to it over and over, hundreds of times, I know ever note by heart, it's such an amazing story and piece of work! And ur right, the music really does tell the story! It's such an Iconic musical journey to take! There has never been another album like it, in the history of music! I'm glad u enjoyed it! I highly recommend repeating the experience several more times!
Someone else in the comments suggested, King Diamond "Them", great album, very spooky tale! If a horror movie could be a band, that would be King Diamond! It actually starts with Abigail, so do that album first, then do Them, then the 3rd album, which I can't remember the name of right now! Basically, he comes from a family of bona-fide witches, his grandmother was the matriarch of their coven, and his mother, aunties, cousins, etc. are all witches, living in an old, creepy, haunted house, some have been locked up in the asylum as crazies over the years, then his sister, starts getting her witchy powers, shit starts getting real around the house! It's a pretty creepy tale, u get the grandma's story, the sister's story, his place in the whole thing, all very sinister and creepy! But the music and the vocals are pretty sick! King has an Amazing vocal range, and the music really helps to tell the tale! Imagine melodic, theatrical, haunting, driving, death metal! That's King! Hope u continue to broaden ur musical horizons brother! Many Blessings

There was a sequel released years later but it didn't have the impact this one did. Rage For Order is another album you might like if you liked this one. It was the album before this I believe. I'm glad you're reviewing these older albums because it gives a perspective on the bands that have come after. This is really one of the best concept albums ever made. I'm seeing your review of O:M three years after you posted it, so I'll just say you did pretty well with the storyline, especially for only your first time hearing it. One correction ( which you probably already know by now) is that Mary took her own life.
Queensryche (original lineup) are my favorite band of all time! I've been listening to O:M, and ALL their songs for over 3 decades and they still sound fresh. I never get tired of them!

But i've read the "official" explanation of the story and i think i got the general idea here. My friend Greg (May he Rest in Peace) even sent me an Operation: Mindcrime shirt and a signed Queensryche photo (new lineup, still cool though!). The best music is timeless and i think that Queensryche achieved just that with this whole album.

I tend to get very detailed about things I care about. Once I typed out the Mindcrime story. I tried to explain it as concisely as possible, but it was still 4 1/2 pages long.
I still think you had a better take on it than most for your first time through.
There are subtle things you pick up with multiple listens though.
Anyway, I agree about timeless things. And, to me, their songs are.

The live show they did at the Moore Theater in Seattle is great, it's Geoff Tate with his new band. But there's also original videos for the singles that they did. Must see!

I got turned on to Queensryche right when the EP came out...bought every thing since then. Seen them do this album 4 times in Salt Lake City and 3 in Florida..seen them on the Empire tour twice back in 91: In San Diego and then one month later in Orlando. If you think I've seen these guys live alot, my ex gf tallied over 20 times last I heard. She's got the Tri-Reich tattood on her back between the shoulder blades. Yeah..we were Queensryche junkies. But enough of that. Thanks for listening to this album in it's entirety...hope you are now enlightened to the the absolute talent of this band and dig into other albums of theirs...enjoy the ride!!

Love seeing someone who's a Nightwish fan watch Floor for the first time on that stuff. Especially that show.

John, what's there to tell. This album is as blunt as it can be, you're the one who's trying to look for an alternate take on this. I am assuming you're religious, at least innately, you seem to have tried to go out of your way not to accept the simple and direct meaning of passages like "... he takes her once a week on an altar like a sacrifice..." What's there to guess? It means exactly what you thought.

    • @JohnG_YT
      @JohnG_YT  5 років тому

I always ,at least, try to read between the lines when it comes to lyrics. Sometimes i just overthink it though,so that may be the case here. But i think i got the general idea here, and it's really well written ,to say the least! :)

You missed how drugs play a huge role in how he is mulipulated into the event that happen. Nicky starts off a heroine addict and is forced into commiting these act just for another fix. Hence the song don't trust the needle, it lies.

@Victor R. He had a gun, but is that how she died? "...your rosary wrapped around your throat" sounds like a hint to the contrary...I'd be very surprised if Doctor X didn't do it himself, or had someone else do it, just to stick it to Nicky.
