  • One of my all-time favorite episodes, the second season premiere is a winner. While a few clips of the whale were blue tinted scenes from the first season "The Ghost of Moby Dick" episode, many were filmed for this installment. Contrary to sources, the set from the film Fantastic Voyage was NOT used for this episode (those turned up on Lost in Space). The whale's interior was created for this episode - a TV Guild article of the time confirms it, as does careful examination of the film itself.
This 16mm print betrays its age, but it's a solid representation of the episode. Note the exemplary Jerry Goldsmith score. He also created the new opening and closing theme which was intended to be used going forward - the next few episodes quote it - however, the more popular Paul Sawtell original was reinstated the following week.
This episode marks the first appearance of Terry Becker as Chief Sharkey and Allan Hunt as Stu Riley. Stu would only last the season as Mr. Hunt was drafted by the end of the year. However, Sharkey would remain and soon become a popular favorite.
Fantastic performances, amazing pacing with escalating stakes and cliffhangers, fantastic miniature work and a sublime musical score make the second season premiere one of the best episodes of the series.

Don't feel sad, I never did I knew that whales couldn't swallow a ship or anybody else for that matter without killing them even if it was an accident Emily most Wheels have this kind of a messed up thing in the back of the throat which doesn't want anything as big as a human to enter... Growing up next to the ocean is amazing things that you learned because like kids in say the mountains learn about skiing learn about the ocean... And the various critters that are.

The first episode of the second season. The opening and closing credits are an episode in themselves. The USS Seaview as seen in her original bow observation nose Eight Windows configuration is blowing her ballast tanks coming to the surface tie in from the episode Submarine Sunk Here where the Bureau of Ships Director Mr. Carver authorized the Seaview to be raised and put back in commission in short order. The USS Seaview undergoes an extensive refit to her bow observation nose Four Windows configuration and is sailing on the surface. After Richard Basehart and David Hedison starring credits The USS Seaview SSRN 1 is seen from the bottom on the surface with a new hangar deck designed on her bow. The closing credits shows a Yellow and Blue Aerial Vehicle diving toward the ocean. The next episode powered again by the Paul Sawtell's Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea Seaview Theme Song Time Bomb will explain that this vehicle is the new auxiliary support craft designated as The Flying Sub FS1.

I seen the episode " submarine down " where the 8 windowed SEAVIEW got sunk. A spy put explosives on one of the windows, and before Nelson or Crane could stop him he set it off. At the end Nelson told Crane that the SEAVIEW was to be raised by the Navy for repairs. They were on a rescue ship. That explains the subs new looks.

I disagree about the miniature work to a certain extent. The diving bell looks WAY too big in relation to the sub when it's being hauled in. It should have been less than half the depicted size.

    • @wardenphil

And how could you open the belly hatch without flooding the Seaview? And no, it wouldn't be practical to pressurize the missile compartment.

Where's Gregory Peck, when we need him??? He could, 'beckon' him!! Well at least, we have "Ishmael'!!! Can we still, call him that🤔?? I think he's higher up, in rank now😉. Good episode☺️!! Admiral Nelson; "The story of Jonah. They knew that, there were fish big enough, to swallow a man". Her response; "Ancient history". History🤨⁉️ But, Jonah and the whale was in the Bible, which is not history, but a fictional, mythical tale. Besides, we all know that a whale, is NOT a fish, but a whale🐳…………

  • @videowilliams

Thus a godless communist found God in the end 😇 A bit convenient how much air the whale had sitting in its stomach but I understand the nightmare shooting all that stuff in liquid would have been. I also would have thought the whale would be extremely keen to get to the surface and breathe, but maybe it's keener to get away from the Seaview first. An amazing idea for an episode anyway- high tech Jonah!
