I love how “I’m never gonna love again” could mean they broke up and she’s never gonna love anyone again but it could also mean they are still together so she’s never gonna love anyone else.

And it fits perfectly because they are so different but also the same, in the intellectual part and the artistic one. They were talking to each other way before we even knew.
She wrote songs about or loosely referencing Matty Healy the entire 10 years since they first met. Even when she was with Joe. Dancing With Our Hands Tied from Rep is probably about Healy. She references him/her/them being 25 years old in the song. She and Joe were both over 25 when they met. Let alone started dating. Death By A Thousand Cuts references a 1975 song lyric. Paper Rings is sounding a HECK of a lot like My Boy Only Breaks His Favourite Toys now looking back and considering both song's lyrics. And My Boy is about Healy. Cardigan is about Healy. She’s describing a country club environment. The tennis court and telling all the rich folks anything they want to hear. Basically saying they are snobs. Taylor may be rich but she likes authenticity. Also cowboys are rebels. Awesome.

"With your boots under my bed" really hammers down the idea that he's not running or hustling anymore, she locked it down, and here's he to stay. "Forever is the sweetest con" in that context does to me indicate that out of all of the schemes they executed in the past, this is the best one because it's the final one. "I'll never love again" is such a great line in that context. At the start, it sounds ominous, it tricks us into thinking this is going to end badly. In the end, that same line can indicate that she'll never love again because she has found the one. Love your reaction, such a beautiful song and piece of storytelling!

Essentially, the gardens might not have been hanging...or even gardens at all. There is a mythical element that adds a whole other dimension to her lyric. She doesn't ACTUALLY know if what she has with this man is real or not... Is his acts of showing love mythical or real? She doesn't know...but she knows she is going to pay for it 😅
