  • Muir Woods National Monument is an amazing place north of San Francisco that preserves some fantastic redwood groves with dozens of massive trees. We did a 2 mile trail that took us past Founders Grove, Cathedral Grove, and Bohemian Grove. We hiked along the Redwood Creek Trail to the Hillside Trail and it was a perfect day in the park.

Great guide, Josh. So hard to show the scale of these immense trees, even if you have a 6-foot-7 Pops for comparison. Everyone who loves Nature should some day visit Cathedral Grove. During a visit to Muir Woods 26 years ago I bought a tiny 6-inch redwood sprig at the park store and planted it in my front yard. It is now 40 feet tall. Some day in the future someone beyond me is not going to think this was so amusing.

Funny - my friend and I both bought that same sprig at Muir Woods about 20 years ago and brought them back to New York City where we both lived at the time.
Sadly they both died almost immediately but then we didn’t have front yards and both lived in tiny New York apartments at the time.

We went there 4 years ago and loved it. What you didn't mention is that one could use the shuttle up to Muir Woods instead of driving your own car. We found it much more convenient. The park was great and we did not come across bugs. We stopped at the caffe for lunch and it was pretty decent.

I visited this place during my last visit to USA. Your video took me again to all the places that I wandered during my visit this jungle and tall trees. I enjoyed. Thank you ... from India

This monument is so beautiful and peaceful. It is so easy to get around as well. But those bugs were something else. A trip to SF always includes a stop here!

I’m glad they are requiring a permit cuz when I was there it was impossible to find parking. But once in there it’s so gorgeous snd you forget the inconvenience. I only visited once so never made it to the canopy view trail cuz I didn’t have time. I loved all the Douglas fir trees as well. They look very similar to the redwoods but the cones look completely different. That’s so cool that so many lady bugs were swarming! Thanks for posting

I agree, it is so busy and the permit system actually helps make it a much better experience now

I love this park too! Toured it in the early 1990’s, compliments of my Mother & older brother.
The AIR was so clear & refreshing!! Even tho I was a smoker then, I didn’t even THINK of lighting up while touring , but later someone did, you couldn’t see them smoking, but you could smell it , I remember thinking how rude because that air was the clearest freshest air I ever smelled & it made me think that this must have been what the earths air quality must have been like before Man started screwing it up! Fascinating tour & I encourage anyone to go if they get the chance! J

You can also check out Samuel P. Taylor state park just north of Muir Wood, a lot less visitors. Also about 1 hour north of Muir Wood, there is Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve that is similar to Muir Wood, not a lot of visitors either.

I enjoyed this walk and hike when I was there last month. It's an in-city park, i guess. The downside were that there are lots of people and they always make too much noise and talking along the way non-stop. It was not a peaceful experience for me but maybe I needed to hike the outer trails further away which I did not do. But the local Redwoods were nice to see.

Muir Woods is one of my favorite places to visit. Did the Hillside trail and part of the bootjack trail. That place does get crowded, but once you go out to the other trails the crowds thin out. As usual Josh great video of this place.

I did the canopy view trail just a week ago. It's more like a true hike (no board walk 😁) and very uncrowded. Some climbing at the beginning and then it winds along through trees - totally doable, medium hike and recommended. (I also did a video which I hope to edit and publish soon).

You should do a video on the Clementine Lake Trail up in Auburn to the waterfall I used to go to Muirwoods in the 80s you can just drive park and go in and then it became so commercial now it’s still beautiful but he just can’t do what she used to do back then it’s over crowded

How does Muir Woods compare with Redwoods NP, in your opinion? I visited Muir Woods a few years ago and was absolutely blown away by it. I’m going to California again soon and considering going to Redwoods this time. Is it worth it? Is it prettier than Muir? I watched your Redwoods video but I honestly can’t tell…
