  • Here we are at the end! Pretty wonderful game overall, I'm thinking of making a thoughts/discussion video soon so that I can talk about what I think of the game with the good and the bad. I feel like the ending merits a lot of discussion as well as to how else it could've been done. What did you guys think of this boss and of the ending in general?

    The best part of the ending is that Kuwana just gets away with it. He walks away and they can’t (and won’t) do anything to stop him. It’s so much better than the predictable “The sympathetic main antagonist realizes the error of their ways and dies tragically” syndrome many Yakuza bosses suffer from

      They could, but that would mean Kusumoto gets off Scott free but still publicly disgraced while Kuwana gets executed along with his students who he blackmailed. Yagami realized this the moment Soma said not to mention Kusumoto's ties to the Mikoshiba murder that any home of handing him over to the authorities was no longer the best option and instead had to settle for Kuwana ending his cleaner services since Kuwana could only do what he do by having the bullies get outted as alibis and the families who accepted his services.
      It's not hard to kill a bully, but when you still have something to live for, the idea of killing someone to get what you want isnt an option unless someone agreed to bear the guilt on your behalf

      @@MrAsaqe to add to your comment, Kuwana himself said that there's no evidence to bring in court of him killing the other 5 bullies since he didn't leave any evidence behind (him admitting murder isn't the highest in term of credibility and strength), so, in a legal sense, they can only let him go.

      @@nadie4221 As funny and annoying it was how Yagami would pull the good old "what would Sawa-sensei think about this hmm...?" card, her being his main motivation made perfect sense to his character as she was an outsider who got dragged into Kuwana's revenge game and got killed, just like Emi on the previous game as he himself mentions at some point. And also how there's pretty much no way to counter the Sawa-sensei argument either, outside of just not giving a shit about her which would be the same as admiting that he's not the vigilante he's trying to be.

    • @nadie4221

      @@jigoku667Yeah it's a fair point but it became a meme at this point, besides kuwana didn't killed sawa nor he had it planned, in fact the main villain should've been public security with soma and their necessary evils.
      I couldn't connect with sawa in any shape or form and her admiting her confession was a lie was the detonating factor of ehara going on the murder, if only she made the right decision everything will be fine.

      That’s exactly what makes this a unique beast of a final boss in the entire Ryu ga Gotoku series. An emotional weight comparable to Kiryu and Nishiki, but imbued with a much heavier philosophical conflict from two truly perfect foils. We find ourselves at times agreeing with Kuwana’s logic and disagreeing with Yagami’s, and the game has no interest in direct justifying Yagami over Kuwana, even Kaito points it out. There is no real right answer, and the game is mature enough to walk this boundary and acknowledge the ambiguity, something the entire Yakuza series and Judgment clung to as a convention (to mostly great effect); antagonists may be relatable and portrayed as human beings who have gone through their shares of traumas that have shaped their philosophies, but the actions they have committed have mostly been too irredeemable (at least in the eyes of the storywriters) to allow them to survive their stories.
      Kuwana is different. The man walks away alive, and the ambiguity in his choice to submit an anonymous tip of the 5 remaining bodies, inevitably propelling the manhunt forward, carries so much weight. Had Yagami’s core philosophy finally rubbed off on him as it did on Kusumoto and Ehara? Should this be interpreted as the mere speck of hope in an otherwise stalemate of two clashing perspectives, the survivors of the “antagonists” (who were also pleasantly not irredeemable, and were portrayed as tragic and relatable) haunted by the weight of their choices. Perhaps heaviest of all is Kuwana’s burden, who shows genuine regret for Sawa’s death at times of Yagami’s interrogations, and all his other actions.
      This game is a standout in the series because it shows a far deeper respect for its characters, and eschews a traditionally straightforward moral dilemma for something much more subjective and ambiguous, and willingly emphases that.
      Top-tier shit RGG, but there’s no going back now. Gotta make Judgment a trilogy, and please don’t lose Kimura.

  • @ttru

    At first, I thought that Yagami was a bit redundant with Sawa-sensei. But then this ending of the game made me realize how important it was for Yagami to repeat her name to Kuwana and Rei. For Kuwana, he still neglected to mention Sawa when talking about justice. For Rei, she was finally able to understand Yagami, and see how her sense of justice and Kuwana's aren't fair because they failed to protect innocent people like Sawa from getting hurt. Some people may agree with Kuwana's definition of justice, where it's okay to justify a good cause at the cost of innocent lives. Others may agree with Yagami's definition of justice, where you should deliver justice without unintentional harm. And in reality, we do agree with different types of justices depending on what we know, the scenarios, who's involved, and our cost/benefit analysis. It's hard for us players to not agree with Yagami and Kuwana to some extent.

    • @TheCynicalGhost
      @TheCynicalGhost 2 роки тому +112

      Yeah, I initially was getting bored of Yagami only using Sawa as his main argument, but not only was her death reminiscent to Emi's to him but also she did play major roles in Kuwana and Rei's life.
      Really was interesting how you couldn't even completely ignore Kuwana's point and I'm glad the game was aware of that.

    • @Murakami2077
      @Murakami2077 2 роки тому +75

      Not only that, but if everyone goes out making their own justice, we would go back to "eye for a eye" age, and judgment wouldn't be the same for everyone, meaning it would not be fair, and justice, at least technically, is blind

    • @RGR490G
      @RGR490G 2 роки тому +78

      I think mentioning Sawa is important, not just because an innocent person died due to getting wrapped up in their schemes, but because her death shows the cracks in Kuwana's and Reiko Kusumoto's actions and even draws parallels to the bullies they'd killed. For example, Reiko trades Kuwana's life for the status quo of her own by ratting him out to Public Security, like how Kuwana's students are all willing to participate in Kuwana's murders so that their own lives aren't effected. And there's even a part where Kusumoto says Sawa's death wasn't directly her fault and Yagami asks her if she'd afford that same logic to her son's bullies. Kuwana, Kusumoto, and Ehara all talk about the legal system failing to save those who slip through the cracks, but their own ideas of justice led to the same happening to Sawa, which they were all willing to brush that under the rug. Their actions are extremely understandable but flawed and as Yagami puts it, the only thing that's fair to everyone is to expose the truth.
      I really loved the characters in this game and I especially hope we get to see Kuwana again.

Most of the other antagonists had an irrationally selfish motive for their actions, Kuwana’s actions were based on a different perspective of the same idea of justice that Yagami also has. Everything in this game was very well written i am myself looking forward to see video essays that being said the story was really justifying actions of a serial killer by making Yagami agreeing and sympathizing with Kuwano also in the later half of the game the story kinda hinged on Sawa's death everytime Yagami would bring it up as soon as there was nothing for him to say but then it hit me that Kuwano did what was necessary but he totally disregard the death of Sawa sensei then what was the difference between him and Soma both were doing necessary evil by overlooking certain notions and making sacrificing and killing and hence i think Yagami's end monologue was really befitting about people having their idea of justice the story had a really good beginning and it hooked me till the ending which made me think that it might end badly but the conclusion was very satisfying.

    They both share the same _Dig in Your Heels_ attitude and both have an _Unwavering Belief_ in their versions of justice. They both go beyond the reach of the law to reach their justice, but _how_ they do it is what makes the difference. The two are in conflict, causing a clash between them.
    The thing is... neither of them is wrong, but there's no right answer to the situation. It really is left to the player to choose who's stance on the matter is the most morally correct, when the answer is... neither.

    The game was overall incredible, but to answer your question from the description-
    I felt the biggest fault was Sawa being used as a plot device to prove Kuwana's justice was false, in pretty much every scene with him. Kuwana himself was a fantastic antihero, I'd go as far as to say he was the main character of the game, although there were definitely a lot of missed opportunities with him.
    Might also be my favourite final boss theme of all time.
    8.5/10, just wish it had more of what made it great.
    Also i predicted Kuwana was going to be a villain from the opening of the game, I was high and when he appeared in the OP, something about his eyes made me feel "Wow, there is so so much darkness inside of him, what is he harbouring?" Can't believe his eyes alone told me that, I guess it's a testament to RGG's amazing motion capture and the actor himself

      I'm quite agree but I'm just wondering that will RGG create spin-off/another game from Lost Judgement where Kuwana as the Main Character? I mean Kuwana's character is really interesting and the way RGG implemented him into the story as a some sort of Anti Hero was really good so i thought that it'll be cool if Kuwana can be a playable characters but it'll be sad that someone as interesting as Kuwana won't be appeared in another franchise. If he did appeared then perhaps that there'll be cameo where his name are mentioned in or appeared to help the MC in the future game tho

    • @propastypete1958

      I think my biggest problem with how Sawa is used in the plot is that it falls into the Yakuza 5 syndrome of constantly reminding you about her at every damn opportunity. In Y5, dreams were brought up so damn much it started to become too saturated of a theme; it became almost silly at the end. In Lost Judgment, while I like how Sawa is used in the plot to show the risk of collateral damage that Kuwana's vigilante justice can bring, Yagami does not fucking shut up about Sawa. Sawa-sensei this, Sawa-sensei that. One of Lost Judgment's biggest strengths for is how it lays out two opposing ideals of justice, and prompts the player to think about which is right, with both Yagami and Kuwana having pros and cons to their points of view- even at the last cutscene and beyond, I was still thinking about Kuwana's actions which is a sign of a great, thought-provoking story. However, I feel like this becomes simplified in quite a few scenes, when Yagami has to remind everyone (including us!) about how Sawa died, like it's his only argument for his cause.
      Still, for me it's not enough to hamper the experience of the story, and this absolutely incredible fight.

      @@propastypete1958 I think the point about Sawa was that she was the starting point of kuwana life as a murderer. Sawa warn kuwana about the bullying when she was a student and he brush it off as boys being boys which lead the student to attempted suicide. Afterward she scold him for not listen to her warning about the bullying which change his view of his students and that ultimately lead him to become kuwana the handyman. After the whole court case with enhara son kuwana call sawa which lead to the secret recording of her testimony where she was force to lie that was later reveal to enhara and made enhara to collaborate with kuwana to murderer mikushiba. After the murder of mikushiba went viral she ask him about it which caught her under the radar of the RK to use her as bait that then lead to her death. Sawa words effect kuwana when he was a teacher and after she die her death was an afterthought for him. Yagami is saying that Sawa was trying to do the right thing from the start when she was a student up in till her death and kuwana must be responsible for dragging her into this because all she was an innocent, kind, good teacher who got rope in because of his mess up back in highschool and his Crusade now.

      @@Leefamily146 The thing is, what you've said is totally true, and a great summation of Sawa's role in the plot- a role I find well written and cohesive. The problem comes when that role becomes oversaturated in dialogue. While she is linked to the main antagonists heavily, it gets a little tiresome hearing Yagami mention her several times per conversation after her death when he's talking to Kuwana, or Soma, or Musamoto. Again, it's a minor annoyance I have, she is a key piece (possibly the biggest key piece in the plot) but she doesn't need mentioning so repeatedly. As players of the story, we know what happened to Sawa- it's the big tragic death that sets off the second half of the game.

    Man, bullying is now have a very massive cause effect. On my country, there's a bullying victim that getting charged by assaulter as "defamation". Thos is when law in my country is now getting worse. Almost never protect the victim that makes me sad everytime.
    That's why, the educational about the effect of bullying is needed for prevent such a bigger cause.

    This game was super interesting to me because very few characters felt like genuine villains. I guess Bando and Soma were the only ones that the term really feels applicable to, unless you want to agree that the status quo should be kept and collusion tolerated as long as it's to maintain "order". Kuwana, Kusumoto, and Ehara definitely were sympathetic and it's clear that they were doing what they thought was right, but I think the problem is that their idea of justice is vigilantism. Kuwana and his group made it quite clear, whether they were able to admit it or not, that they were okay with innocents getting caught and killed in the crossfire as long as they get their goals accomplished, almost no different than Soma. Their problem also was that their idea of justice only works AFTER people have already suffered. Kuwana only seemed to kill bullies after their victims were already dead. How does that stop bullying? How does that inspire people to change? His mindset doesn't foster community or preventative measures, it fosters fear and that being even harder is how you survive a cruel world, which is a reason why people bully to begin with. Again, it's similar to Soma and his quote “First comes pain, then the fear. You have to start with pain. Fear won’t work if you haven’t given them a reason.” Despite how much Soma and Kuwana hate each other, I thought it was interesting how similar their methods and mindsets could be at times.
    Of course, Kuwana is also a foil to Yagami, both wanting justice but trying to get it in different ways. The reason why I think Yagami was right was, like I said before, his method of dealing with bullying helps foster community, camaraderie, and most importantly, trust and openness. He uses Sawa as an example of how Kuwana's methods can cause collateral damage and how keeping these secrets can lead to fear, which are great points, but one thing I think they should've touched on a bit more here is what Yagami and Amasawa (surprisingly enough) talked about: A good detective solves incidents before they occur. THIS is the mindset that Yagami prides himself on, and I wish he told it to Kuwana, too. As shown by Yagami's methods when helping Koda and in the post-credits cutscene, Yagami's approach to get bullies to change seemingly did more good than anything Kuwana did. The law isn't perfect and needs to evolve, but it all starts in the community.
    This is definitely the most morally gray game in the series, and I really love it for that. It starts out SLOW, probably one of the slowest in the series, but by the end they weaved a pretty complex and interesting story. Definitely tied with Judgment for me, since they both had their strengths and weaknesses. My order for best to worst in the series is now probably:
    0 > 6 > Judgment = Lost Judgment > 3 > 7 > 5 = Kiwami > 4 > Kiwami 2

    • @MrAsaqe
      @MrAsaqe 2 роки тому +2

      Well it could have been all prevented if Mitsuru or Toshiro cornered Kawai or Mikoshiba the following day with a lead pipe and a stern word about their behavior. But you think Sawa would approve of such methods to get the bullying to stop? They didn't wanted to be an emotional and social burden to their parents by getting in trouble themselves

    • @GenesisJames
      @GenesisJames 2 роки тому +13

      @@MrAsaqe Yeah, Sawa wouldn't want to stop bullying with violence. Kinda makes her death at the indirect hands of Kuwana even more tragic.

    • @MrAsaqe
      @MrAsaqe 2 роки тому +11

      Also to add, Sawa unfortunately had a fatal flaw as well, that when push came to shove, she acted passive about her situation (not for a lack of a fault for it) as she was a bad teacher because she sees but doesn't act, and when she does act it's in a very poor or a very held back manner. If she really want to put a stop to the bullying would have put her career on the line rather than crying about how another pupil/peer of her was being bullied and hope someone would fix the problem. Still doesn't justify her death at the hands of Kuwana's actions however

    • @hydraulicpress439
      @hydraulicpress439 2 роки тому +5

      But i think.. If Kuwana become a 'famous serial killer' for punishing the bullies, maybe people will stop become a bully because afraid they might get killed by the serial killer. Just like Soma said "First the pain, then comes the fear". Kuwana can spread the fear and it can effect long term isn't?
      While Yagami, he need to find the bully and 'punish' them in his way. The effect is what we see in after credits. It can give some courage to people to act first than just watching. (I might wording it wrong, my english is not good)

    • @MrAsaqe
      @MrAsaqe 2 роки тому +8

      @@hydraulicpress439 That's exactly it. You turn future bullying victims to become sociopaths because they can't trust the system anymore. If a bully does something to them, they resort to the worst possible options out there. I once asked someone about what triggers a teen to kill someone instead of themselves was from whatever sociopathic tendencies they had that would trigger. We see that in Ehara who at the prospect of seeing Mikoshiba die, chose to throw away his career, his marriage and his reputation all for the satisfaction of murder. He committed the murder that not even his son would have done.

    Sawa sensei shouldn't have been killed, but she lost her life as a result being in touch with Kuwana. No matter how much Kuwana justifies his form of justice, but there will always be Sawa sensei who didn't do anything, but still lost her life that's why Yagami kept bringing her because that's the hole in Kuwana's form of Justice that innocents will lose their life, if he continues that path.
    Whereas Yagami being relying on Law too much and there will be innocent people who will not get justice and the criminals will get away with it because of lack of evidence, that's why Kuwana keeps bringing Mitsuru because he was a victim of the law which couldn't give him justice.
    Thus this battle of right and wrong is just a matter of perspectives and this battle will keep going on forever because no single answer exists.
