  • This is a recut version. NBCU blocked the Leno clip. The storyline is now punctured, but what can you expect from a network with Jimmy Fallon as the Tonight Show host?
    1. February 7, 2010. CBS airs the ad.
    2. February 12, 2010. Oprah Winfrey talks about the ad.
    3. February 8, 2010. Dave talks about the ad.
    4. February 8, 2010. Jay talks about the ad. - BLOCKED BY THE BIRD NETWORK
    5. March 24, 2010. Dave talks more about the ad.
I extracted the Oprah clip from another You Tube channel years ago. It doesn't appear to be available anymore, but if anyone can find it, I'll credit the uploader and provide the link.
As others have pointed out, Dave is wearing Art Donovan's football jersey number. Art would pass away three years later.
All of Art's Late Night and Late Show appearances here:
Art Donovan Collection on Letterman, Part 1: 1983-93:
    • Art Donovan Collection...
Art Donovan Collection on Letterman, Part 2: 1994-2000:
    • Art Donovan Collection...

Respects to Dave and Jay, and Oprah, of course, for doing this classic Superbowl ad. Pity NBC blocked Jay's comments on his participation in the spot, as he was very gracious and sounded like he genuinely enjoyed catching up with Dave.

I really think losing out on Dave's friendship was something Jay truly hated about being given the Tonight Show but no one in their right mind would've turned it down.

Jay Leno talks briefly about this commercial on the 26th episode of Neal Brennan's Blocks Podcast (2023-06-15) at just a bit before the 47 minute mark.

thanks for the re-upload. i wonder why would NBC block their old clips, its just free advertising for them

And they could monetize it instead of making sure no one will ever see it. Very short-sighted.

You gotta give it to Jay Leno to appear in a competing shows ad

Yes, and with a guy who'd spent weeks waging war against him in his monologue. Jay Leno certainly doesn't seem to carry a grudge. I wish the same could be said of Dave.

Yup. Too bad NBC brass was shitty about releasing the clip about Jay talking about it. He did have enough clout to show up, though, and was decent enough to do it. Oprah obviously drove the thing even as a hired gun, neither side wanted to say no to her.

Back in the day of radio, record companies used to bribe disc jockeys to play songs from their artists. Back in the day of decent late night talk shows, movie studios and TV networks used to push actors to go from show to show displaying clips of their projects as a form of advertisement. Today, for some reason those same record companies, studios, and networks think that a video playing a small clip is stealing instead of advertising. What an odd world we live in.

    Do another one.
Dave: This is the worst Superbowl party ever.
    Oprah: Now Dave, be nice.
Jay: He's just saying that because I'm here.
Dave: (Jay Leno imitation) He's just saying that because I'm here.
Conan walks in with drinks and says: Jay, you took my spot.

No surprise that NBC blocked it. As you say, anyone who thinks Fallon is a good host is delusional. I haven't watched more than about 30 minutes of that guy in total through the years. All that fake, hysterical laughter is annoying as hell. By the way, glad to see the new Letterman channel hasn't copyright claimed your videos off of UA-cam yet. Your stuff is much, much better.

NBC is so petty! Are they afraid they'll lose a few bucks? Today, Colbert is kicking Fallon's ass!

    • @dongiller
      @dongiller  5 років тому +9

That’s just it; they lose nothing. They can just as well choose to monetize their content. Instead they opt to ensure that no one sees it.
      I don’t understand the mindset.

Yeah… I’d take the car. Apparently I’d have to worry about sales tax, though, as Oprah got into a little hot water there (certain guests were hit with unexpected bills from their state governments they weren’t able to pay).

Dave at his desk from 2000 until 2015 was always fire. I truly, truly miss good late night talk shows. I'm sorry but Kimmel is the only guy that comes close and he's still not as good. The tv world changed when streaming and then covid happened.

It's funny when he says "kinda Fox" because they really are the distant 4th place network in my eyes. They have the least primetime pressense and they're only as old as myself, b.1986. Fox is the 38 year old trying to play ball with the senior citizens a.k.a. NBC, ABC, CBS lol

The best of the best. Ever. Why did he even want a fourth-hand hand-me-down show? He created THREE shows. All Johnny and Jay did was take over a show created by Steve Allen.

    • @bfsgman
      @bfsgman 4 роки тому +3

Wow, you're really over-simplifying it. The impact of these late night shows has nothing to do with who created them. What matters is what each host brings to the show and how they make it their own. Johnny Carson didn't host The Tonight Show for 30 years simply because he was some run of the mill replacement.

I've never thought Jay Leno was funny but that being said I never understood what Dave's beef with Leno was. Did Dave expect Jay not to take the tonight show job in 1992? Seems like NBC stabbed Jay , Conan and Dave in the back. But either way , Dave is the 2nd greatest of all time behind Carson
