Watched it 3 times. WOW! I love the way the birds are playing in the mists and swells. Pretty AWESOME! Think I'll watch it one more time. And share it.
Wow...That is amazing. Thank you. Keith "Q-Cumber" Newcomer and I saw it half that size in 1978. Wow. Thanks again for that memory. That fog horn sounds so wonderful. Jeff Linehan
Thanks for sharing this. Your North Coast seems to get the full fury of all acts of god: quakes, Surf, floods. Impressive! What blows my mind is that this a harbor entrance. I'd hate to be a captain on Dec 10, 2015.
Apparently you can't read because the answer to your "question" is in the video description. This is what it looked like at the harbor entrance during a 32-foot swell. Period.
+thethegreenmachine Thanks! Yeah, no one got knocked over. But the two dudes out on the jetty would have almost certainly been killed when a set wiped the jetty clean - as can be seen in one of the sequences... The group at the beach wall probably wasn't in that much danger, but a heavy wave can always smash you and your head against the concrete deck. The view was better up on the dunes anyway - sheesh!
M. Sid Kelly (HumboldtMike) I wonder how many people figure they could outrun a big wave as it chases them back up the jetty. Some of them might actually be fast enough if that thing wasn't full of big holes.
+waywardmuse Thanks! The swell originated from a storm up the Gulf of Alaska, so I'm not sure about influence of El Nino. The conventional wisdom here is that El Nino years can be dry early and wet into the spring. We've been wet already though, so maybe El Nino has some surprises for us...
+gina Seems like maybe these storms have originated too far north to be El Nino influenced. One of the Eureka meteorologists had this to say on Lost Coast Outpost: “It’s hard to say, typically the effects of El Niño are more prevalent in the second half of the winter,” Charboneau said. “It will be hard to say until the season is over. So the precipitation is near to slightly above normal for winter this year. So we’re off to a pretty good start.”
+M. Sid Kelly (HumboldtMike) yay, it was sunny today. ;) they were right. so, that's interesting info you got there. I don't like rain. ;/ I know we need it, but yuck. so, what do you think is responsible for all the strange moss on wood, and growing on sidewalks. my back south yard with big Redwoods on the edge, but not anywhere on the south side with no trees. I lived here a long time, and I've never seen it before at my place. it's even on the front porch where there aren't any trees. I think considering the drought, that it's strange. I see it in the cracks in the sidewalks all over town too. Humboldt weather keeps changing. ;)
wow! good shots you got. Alves was supposed to do my gutters that day, but decided the wind was too much that day making it dangerous, and waited till the 11th. they got wet. ;) poor guys. this is so cool, my sis found it in SAC where she lives and sent it to me. thanks, you did good. ;) really cool!!
+M. Sid Kelly (HumboldtMike uh...that was HUGE surf. LoL, the kind you don't want to be out and close to. I just watched it again, and I get the Knuckleheads thing. I heard kids voices, shoot, morons is more like it. I wouldn't let my kids near it. good call ;)
Thanks. That's an audible channel marker - not sure if technically a foghorn tho. The one on the other side of the channel beeps at a different rate so it helps orient mariners in the dark/fog.
@@timg6176 Thank you for the advice. Will probably not go out if it's bigger than head high for me. Which would you say are the best spots (preferably where people go surf) around the Humboldt area?
Imagine what it would have looked like before the jetties were put it. Swell energy would have been pumping through the natural lagoon entrance and you could be getting tubed on the Highway 101 side of the shorelines.
About once a year somebody will stand on the jetty and get swept out to sea getting thoroughly bashed on the rocks. You only need look at what the ocean has done to it to know not to do that. But some folks don't understand the ocean 's power. Once I saw some guy drive his pickup, with his kid in it, out onto the boardwalk and let the waves crash over the rocks and his truck., which I'm sure became a rust bucket.
+Thaddeus Hubricht Thanks! I remember thinking that I wanted to follow the action but didn't want to lose the background action too. I think it was good practice.

Crossed that bar many times during my 25 years of crabbing.

+Don Lubach Yeah, shipping seemed shut down. Be a lot nicer to be in port than at sea though!
+Traci Bear Thiele we live behind the Redwood Curtain. ;)
32 feet lol.. Not at the time this video was taken. Those waves are about 12 feet

The sea was angry that day my friends.
Yes was it SHN engineers who designed the DOLOS?
Beautiful video, Thanks Mike
I remember going to sleep at the Coast Guard station to that sound of the sea buoy.
perfect surfing conditions
I saw a guy being towed by a jet ski surfing waves that big in exactly the spot around 2008? I don't see how he floated with balls that big!
Wow. How's that drainer at 1:55?
One day there might be locals out
uuufff a rightie on the inside drainer
Lol how hard did the knuckleheads get hit? Gorgeous shot at the end.

Awesome video & stills! I could just taste that salt and feel the wind in my face. El Nino at work, huh?

What kind of fog horn does Humboldt bay have? That swell is insane!
+The Mighty Duckman Not sure what they call it. But the north and south tooters seem to have different toot rates to help mariners orient.
What an experience! Greetings Manfred
+mbhsug Thanks! I'd been looking forward to it all week, & it peaked 5 feet higher than predicted and perfectly between the squalls.
Cool video. What's that repeated beeping noise?

This is beautiful, can't wait to see something like this first-hand
You're in luck then a massive swell coming shortly.
@@timg6176 Glad you replied ! I'll be in the west coast in about 3weeks. Hoping the cold keeps bringing big swells for me to witness.
@@allersfera if you intend to surf Northern Cali waves, please be aware of the powerful rip currents. They are super strong here.

Amazing video, M
+Jeff Slarve Which M? *L* Mike did a great job.
Why did nobody answer the phone during the whole video?
amazing how much water is moving, stadiums full

67 year old woman swept off yesterday.
Sign at the bottom 'Please climb to the top. Have a nice day'
Looks like a good day to take a walk on the jetty.
WE HAD 20 to 30 on North Shore on Oahu
+Monica Abrahamsen Now THAT I'd like to see.
I should have bookmarked the pic's!
Nice framing.

Bet the bite was on like crazy the following day.
"Knuckleheads" is far too kind...
Not a good time to bring the boat in....
I would love to drive my 4x4 up the jetty when it's like that!
That's what this guy thought too... lostcoastoutpost.com/2017/jan/26/video-someone-drove-out-north-jetty-during-high-su/
You climb skyscrapers on the outside too I bet
Wow, just beautiful, and scary
Home sweet home!!!!!
Oh my gosh, .

Hey, Humboldt Mike. I sent you a message. Check it out and hit me up. Love your vids
WOW!
sure it's not a tsunami????
+Barb Weyls Yep - storm generated waves predicted days in advance.
I reckon if you had a red toyota you could drive out there and even get a ride in a helicopter 🤔
Worked for that one guy!
Didn't it ever. 👍
I mean the harber
hm nicely
This is nothing compared to the Bay Of Bundy, they have mass waves over 100 feet at times, off the Canadian coast line!
Look it up, google it! FACT!
Darwinism can do crazy things
Cops killed my friend that day
hm nicely
