New sub here ..I loved Blackpool in the 80s..I used to take my mum there and she spent all day on the shove machines ..never won anything ...but had a great time ...
Bond Street in the south of the town was a great little shopping area back then, Today it's mostly boarded up shops and gone very down hill. I still ♥️ Blackpool though.
Lived and worked in Blackpool in the late 80's - went on a weekend jolly up with the lads , i ended up being offered a job and stayed 😂 i always remember how friendly the locals were , great decade and great times ! ❤👍
Lived through this time in Blackpool. The 1980’s represented the last of the best decades for the Town. Times were better back then, I don’t care what anyone says. Like all decades, the 1980’s had its problems, but Blackpool was thriving and buzzing back then. The town had a record number of visitors in 1988. Look at all those shops. Where did they go! Great time to grow up, the best time in fact. I was very lucky. 1989 marked the beginning of the end for my great town, and for a multiplicity of different reasons, some political, some shifts in demand, whatever, the town has never recovered. Meanwhile, the region’s cities, no go areas in the 1980’s are awash with attractions, hotels and glass towers. What went wrong?
Internet sales only account for 20% of all retail sales. Blackpool was a regional retail destination with big footfall both during the season and out of season for locals. Individuals would still spend money in Blackpool with decent shops but people have been drawn away by the big cities. You only have to look at Lytham down the road, day visitors will still spend money if there is a decent selection of shops. Look at how busy rival seaside town Brighton gets with its selection of quirky independent shops. @@graemelough7174
Tony Blair, that's where. He did to Blackpool exactly what Margaret Thatcher did to Liverpool 15 years previously. Destroyed and ripped the heart out of the place and put the town down big time.
Nice nostalgia trip there. Makes me happy and sad at the same time. Happy memories of family holidays in Blackpool in the 1980's and sad that my Mum and Dad are no longer here. Was there recently and it's a pale imitation of the place it once was . Hopefully it can have a renaissance because it would be great to see it back to something like it's former glory.
Absolutely loved Blackpool, many happy holidays when I was young, remember buying a skirt for my last year at school 1983 from Goldbergs in Hounds Hill , loved that shop, so exciting when you were a teenager, there was also another shop in there selling make up , perfume etc loved that too, and Lewis's , 😊😊
Blackpool 80s was amazing , the array of shops , ( had three of the best musical instrument stores in Lancashire) shops, markets, and not many know this , Blackpool had probably the finest Hairdresser in the North of England ,Pat Woods from Trendsetters,September ( Saks) hair studio , what a complete nightmare, come on BB Council , get ya hands out each others arse pockets and work with this ( tories in disguise) Labour govt
Cannot believe there is a photo showing Escott Estates, an Estate Agency on Church Street that was taken when I worked there on my first Youth Opportunities Scheme. That is amazing!!
I remember Pricebusters in the early nineties too the early 2000s it was the place too go for dodgy pick n mix, seconds aftershaves, knock off cassette tapes, and general rubbish you could buy in Blackpool at the time including some strange looking inflatable dolls, what a great place :D also the pakistani market stall full of interesting and random items in the basement of Pricebusters where he announced loudly that if you paid with a tenner that "£10 IS GOING IN!"
@2:54 - Methinks that pic , might have been slightly staged .. When was the last time you saw that many checkouts open in a supermarket at the same time ? It didn't even look busy !
Actually quite run down, reminds me of a place we have here in Christchurch called "New Brighton" was a seaside shopping mall of 5 or 6 blocks, was popular from 50s to 80s as it allowed Saturday shopping when it was banned elsewhere. Now its all sleazy and run down, homeless, dodgy pubs with pokie machines, $2 shops etc. $2 shop kiwi version of Poundland.
Its atrocious what is happening to our seaside towns and Ive just been to Blackpool and disappointed and sad just doesnt begin to cover it. They dont care anymore there is no effort.

dirty druggies being allowed to wander freely is another reason all these formerly wonderful but still dodgy towns went down hill after 1997
Loved pricebusters visited there every year as a kid holidaying in the 80s with my Grandparents always a bargain to be had in Pricebusters ❤
I usedvto work for my then brother-in-law, who owned a pick'n'mix sweet stall, in there...happy days!

Yes many happy memories too, not the same anymore, went a couple of years ago , was run down and shabby such a shame 😢
Wow great memories, So sad to see how Blackpool has radically changed since the 80s, and not for the better!

Does anyone remember the action man display in Woolworths window in the 70s. Absolutely awesome.👍
