This is my favorite collection of YSL and, really, of any designer in general. Most people remember the Russian Peasant and Chinese collections but for me, this one is the best. The outfits were a wonderful pastiche of styles, essentially 1940s, but also touches of the 1920s and 1930s with particular hommages to Chanel. Similar retro outfits followed in subsequent collections. This is also a collection that illustrates how the couture took a back seat to Rive Gauche during the early part of the 1970s. Apparently, while the couture collection was critically panned, as this commentator says, the Rive Gauche versions that soon followed were a huge success. YSL was encouraged by the ability to experiment with ideas without the withering reviews of the fashion press and he let his public decide what worked. If you look up photos of examples of each, you can see how faithfully the couture ideas were executed at the lower price point.
....it was one of the most INFLUENTIAL collections in the history of HAUTE COUTURE and POP CULTURE.......i saw TINA in it for the RIVE GAUCHE line....in WHITE...it's a part of her ICONOGRAPHY..it's the suit she wore when she went BERSERK on IKE in the limo....he had NERVE to smear CHOCOLATE CAKE all over her pantsuit....MISS ROSS also had the suit in white....all the female stars had to have it......all the designers still reference that collection...we ate it up here in America during the great part of the 70s and beyond....there was a great NOSTALGIA period where we ate up ANYTHING from the 30 through the 50s...we SCOURED thrift stores and flea markets and garage sales for ANYTHING that gave us that LOOK...my best friend even restored an old 1945 CHEVY...to match his clothes....the movie....LADY SINGS the BLUES....was so ICONIC in pop culture and cinema....FUNNY GIRL...and FUNNY LADY too....everything the brother said in this video is TRUE...the collection ENRAGED and EMBARRASSED the FRENCH....however YSL just told them if they did not like it he would just STOP DOING HAUTE OUTURE...for those musty old women...he had already said he couldn't STAND THEM ANYWAY several years before......and he said he would just continue doing RIVE GAUCHE....his ready to wear LINE....the FRENCH....SHUT THE HELL UP...and YSL....went on to be the GREATEST....i have to say my fave moments was watching those teen girls on the TV show....SOUL TRAIN....wearing their EXCELLENT COPIES of the collection....flowers in their hair the whole bit...
Some of that narrative was really sketchy sounding to me. The WW2 influence? The 1968 riots? The "V" lapels for Victory? I'd really like to hear what Yves would have to say about those connections to his collections. Maybe it was his get-up that got to me.
