Colin you and your crew are probably the most honest and genuine boat repair team on the planet. You are doing the work as if it was your boat, building them back much better than they factory did originally. Thanks for sharing
Agreed. But of course remembering that this channel makes a good video log of repairs when it comes to actually sell to the new owners and finally cash in (not being cynical, and I'm sure they would be as diligent without cameras rolling; but that is always on my mind when Colin is explaining how much "better than factory" they are doing!) Love the channel, and really great work!
I would feel much safer in a boat that has been rebuilt by Collin and his crew, than a fresh new factory built one! Wonderful work guys. Cheers from Winnipeg. (BTW...65f is sun tanning weather here.)
@Aus L exemple the keel construction...... the sacrificial “installation” just glued with Sika 291 is for me a smart and cost effective process. But when you see how the keels are manufactured....: junction without glass overlay, foam partially filled. Typical of a “one step Molding and closing” process. I had the same issue on my rudder (JP3 manufactured as probably the rudder and keel of all FP boat).
First, the keels are sacrificial, they are supposed to come off. Secondly: survivor bias. This thing survived a grounding in a hurricane. You should be worried about the quality control on the boats that are at the bottom of the sea.
@@johntchb a glued bond is stronger than a bolt. And this thing already met your angry sea: it survived a grounding in a hurricane and it only had minor cosmetic damage and the sacrificial keels came off.
Go watch Mads over at Sail Life. His Warrior 38, Athena was utter garbage. Man's too nice to say it as it is, but if you watch his entire refit story, you'll paint a clear picture, that boat was built by trained apes in a shed. Mads practically rebuilt the entire boat. Makes that crazy Aussie over at Life On The Hulls seem like a perfectly sane individual for building his own catamaran from scratch. Then you have people like the couple over at Sailing hunk of junk, who also, built theirs out from scratch, but from precut bits. They had issues with fitment. Imagine that, a boat build from scratch from allegedly fitting CAD model...AND the company made them wait eons for talks (he explains it much better). Quality is what you make of it, you can't trust anyone but yourself. If someone shows up to sell you something, it's nearly guaranteed to have flaws. At best, because they're incompetent, at worst, because they're trying to scam you. I will bet any person, anywhere, that you can take the most expensive yacht on the commercial market (so not one ofs) and cut it up, and you'll find serious build flaws. I mean, in this case, he found those keels weren't even glued in because of a hurricane, but imagine if he were sailing, and his keels would fall off for one reason or another...you saw the other episodes where they towed the keeless cats. That wasn't fun.
Colin, I think you are doing an amazing job on that damaged catamaran. It seems that you are able to do anything you put your mind to. I wish you and your crew the best. ⛵
I saw your video on buying 2 boats ( which you sold for $8000 profit) a couple of weeks ago. So I started watching from episode 1. I've now finally watched every single episode and am up to date. Love your video's. Keep up the awesome content - from your fellow Kiwi living in Aussie.
You guys do amazing work! Such care is taken to repair things correctly and over-engineered for strength and proper fit. I love how you explain everything that you're doing! It's really very impressive!
The fact that the keels are positively buoyant means that the Sikaflex 291 is not actually holding them into the boat. It just keeps them "still" and in place. Their inherent buoyancy keeps them stuffed up into the pockets. Pretty ingenious if you ask me.
I've been watching you and your team at work rebuilding the boats. Can I just say that you are doing an excellent job you should be well proud of your team and the work you are all doing. When she is finished she will be a fantastic blue water boat and she will be a million times before than when she came out of the factory. I hope the owner of the factory where she was built is watching you videos to see the proper way to build a boat. You are doing a superb job. Well done. 👌👌👌

This is a fabulous video, and my favourite channel. I admire your willingness to take on anything. I've watched all of your episodes and what stays with me is that your spirit refuses to be crushed, by anything :) Respect!! I hope I can call you friend, even though we have never met. It would be a pleasure to talk with you in person.
Colin!! Did you get my message about Jordan and Des?? Great job on these keels. I’m an arm chair sailor, so I’ve just learned heaps about Cats!! Never knew this. Legends!!
CNC - computer neumerically controled machines now shape surf boards - one in 8 mins - to the customers exact size shape requirements. Board makers world wide are buying cnc machines .Cheap second hand in some countries. I know a guy doing it, he charges 100.00 bucks per board , shaping only. Hand shaping costs more isnt acurate- when you care about board shape- and of course very toxic to the workers health- masks ,ventilaters etc - most dont use. Just some useless info! :)
LOL, Collin: “ it’s really cold this morning 60 / 65 F “. I know a guy that will still glass when its down to 20 F. He says it just takes a lot longer to set up, but works fine. That cat is looking amazing guys, looking forward to your next video.
Hey guys, love your channel... Have you ever tried to cool the two part poly pour foam. I live Kauai and we have warm and humid temperatures. We measure out our part a and part b into plastic measuring containers, then put it in the freezer for 5 or so minutes, then mix the two and you have way more working time. It slows the reaction. So grateful for your videos, I hope to fix up an old sailboat and sail and surf from Hawaii through the South Pacific... Aloha!
Hi Guys; i've had in the past the possibility to restore a 40 ft wooden catamaran recovered with fibreglass and seeing what you have acheived and the techniques you used, well hats off!!! by the way, if i know of anyone who is in need of serious repairs i will give him your details..if you have the time for it..keep well guys, great job done as always!!!
Great video as usual. Have you ever seen an abandoned boat thatvwas in fair shape. Also enjoying you on Below Deck and you really didn't know that that Head was out of bound? LOL

Hadn't thought of the flotation aspect of the sacrificial keels. I'm more used to thinking of a monohull sailboat that has several thousand pounds of lead at the very bottom, that most definitely would NOT bob back up to the surface if you hit something!
Hey Guys, like your Videos! I'm myself am a Boatbuilder from Germany, working in Vancouver atm. Well done Col, new boat buyers will and can be asking serious questions from the factories now you have exposed the corner cutting - of which l think could have been done a lot better when they were building from new especially since they had all the space available to make a proper job - it’s like literally spoiling a ship for appath of tar

Next up on MTV PIMP MY DAMAGED CATAMARAN hosted by Jamie and Colin! Great work boys! Cheers from the States!!!!

Watching your videos really exposes the production catamaran manufacturer’s quality control issues.
First, the keels are sacrificial, they are supposed to come off. Secondly: survivor bias. This thing survived a grounding in a hurricane. You should be worried about the quality control on the boats that are at the bottom of the sea.
I reckon you blokes will end up repairing boats for a living! Incredible work fellas, well done.
Amazing skills chaps, V well done, stronger and FAR better than Factory..
I'm amazed how much of these boats is simply stuck together with glue from a caulking gun, rather than bolted together.
They are absolutely crap would not want to face moderately angry seas in one of these.

You would be surprised how many keels fail due to poor construction.
Glue is strong if it is actually applied correctly.
Obviously it was NOT!
It’s scary the Quality these boats leave the factory’s
certainly makes you wonder about Quality Control....
It’s profit control nothing else.
@@paulvlug812 Or bad measuring up when you see 80% of epoxy glue not even touching ?
I thought the same thing. They’ve uncovered so many faults with the manufacturing of this boat. Will be a better boat when they finish with it.
