Based on the viewing of “The Virgin Spring” , which was the only Bergman film I had ever seen at the time, I decided to purchase the Bergman box set. I am so happy that I did. I have since watched the first seven films of the set and have enjoyed each and every one of them. Although I wouldn’t recommend “The Virgin Spring” as a starter film in ones Bergman journey due to its brutal nature, it was a powerful film that gave me an essence of Bergman’s film making mastery. Thank you so much Daisuke for your videos about the Criterion collection. Your reviews and recommendations have been very helpful to me, particularly in my decision to purchase the Bergman box set. It has been worth every penny I spent on it, and I too would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of cinema.
Oh gosh, what a great comment! And, I totally agree with you here. You know, the film THE VIRGIN SPRING could be my favorite Bergman film ever. And yet I did not mention it here because, as you say, it is very brutal and intense. But, there is so much here. Even now, it lingers in the mind. Needless to say, if you like THE VIRGIN SPRING, then you will love the Bergman box set. And it seems like you do!! Well done!!! Well done indeed.
I saw “The seventh seal” when I was in the phase where I pretended to understand cinema but really didn’t, ever since I first heard of this boxset I wanted to get it but never thought I could get anything out of the experience of these films, thanks to you I have now seen the three films you mentioned and also “hour of the wolf” and “Shame” and I cannot wait to finally get the boxset because I loved them all! Thank you so much for giving me the push to finally explore Bergman!!! I know this video is three years old but I wanted to comment this anyway.
Wow, thank you so much for this. It really means a lot and I hope you enjoy your Bergman journey. You have seen three so far, and so please keep on enjoying them. If there any more that you really love, please let me know. I would love to hear updates about your cinema journey my friend. Anytime.
Watched my first Bergman film 'Cries and Whispers' in my local indy cinema at the weekend, not stopped thinking about it since. What an incredible film! Needless to say, this boxset is currently on it's way across the Atlantic as I type. Working my way through this fantastic playlist while I wait, keep up the good work!
Hello Matt Jones and thank you so much for this!! Wow, yes, it is a very powerful work and that is very great that you were able to catch up with it at your local cinema. And when the set arrives for you, I really hope you enjoy your continuing Bergman journey.
Just came across your video. Seventh Seal and Shame were my first Bergman films. I loved them. I missed out on this box set this past 50% flash sale but still picked it up from Amazon. Can’t wait to go through the collection. I also want to thank you for the completely non-judgemental approach to this question. Will check out your other videos!
Hello MrPanther54, and thank you so much for your kind words and for letting me know about your reaction and your purchase of the set. I think that if you like The Seventh Seal and Shame, you will LOVE this set. When you go through the set, I would love to hear your thoughts on the films, and if there are any other films in particular that you like, please let me know anytime. I would love to hear about it. Cheers.
Fascinating...all three choices were my introduction to Bergman in the 90s. For me the films were revelatory but not so much for others I experienced them with. I'd love to get the set but it's out of my price range. However, The Seventh Seal was one of my first bluray purchases. Cheers!
I bought the set. I have worked my way through the set up to Portrait of a Marriage. I have quite enjoyed the films thus far. There is so much in this box. It really is overwhelming, but in a good way.
Daisuke, this video is my most viewed video on your channel, and the most influential to me. Ingmar Bergman is considered a master filmmaker by the likes of other masters such as Martin Scorsese, so that alone peaked my interest. Then I found this video on your channel in search of a good starting place. I followed your recommendation, starting with "Seventh Seal", then "Wild Strawberries", and then concluded that this set is for me. I saved up money so that way I could purchase during a sale, and I just got the set in the mail. Thank you, Daisuke!!! I will be returning to this set of videos to leave comments as I slowly go through this set, but I strongly feel like you deserve to know that your videos have influenced my cinema journey. Again, thank you Daisuke!

Hey Daisuke, I hope you are doing well. This was one of the first videos of yours that I had the pleasure of viewing. I was about to purchase Shame on Blu ray when I stumbled across this mammoth set. It seemed like a stellar value, so I searched for more info about the collection and came across this video of yours. I had seen The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, and Shame, and I loved them all, so I thought it'd be a safe bet to purchase this collection. I managed to find it brand new for around $100! I was stoked, I couldn't really say no at that price! It came in a week or so ago and I still haven't opened it, but I am really looking forward to finally checking out films like Persona, Fanny & Alexander, and a Scenes from a Marriage. Thanks again for your great recommendations and information. P.S. I wanted to thank you for answering my questions on your latest Q&A. I posted quite a long response to your answers on the video, but for some reason UA-cam again is slow to publish my comments. I hope my response eventually appears on that video! Best regards, stay safe!

Of course it completely sold out, but they are busy making more and shipping should begin sometime in February. I forget the date. Can't wait for it to arrive. I’d like to get this set one day. I’ve seen some of his films, such as The Seventh Seal, Autumn Sonata and Face to Face. I enjoyed those films when I saw them and want to see more films from Bergman. While I don’t know when I’ll be able to get it, I will always keep an eye out regarding the set, particularly if it drops in price sometime in the future. I’ll keep a look out for it when Criterion has their 50% off sales as well. I’m enjoying this series very much Daisuke. Thank you for making this.

This is definitely something I want to get, but I have already decided to wait until I’ve watched Seventh Seal (I decided on that because after my initial picks that’s the earliest Bergman available) and even then I’m going to wait until a sale.
I'm already impressed and astounded by your attention to detail in regards to this set, Daisuke, and I'm only 2 videos into the series ;) But while I very much agree with you that The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, and Persona are a good litmus test to see how much one likes Bergman, I think they are all fairly heavy films (though I should say that I particularly enjoyed Wild Strawberries and strongly admire the other two); because of this, I might suggest some people to try watching Fanny and Alexander (the theatrical version) if they want to see a slightly lighter side of Bergman while still getting a taste for his larger themes - it may also help some people that it is in color.
Tim Holm great point. I was actually considering this film as well for the reasons that are very similar to those you mentioned! So you and I must be kindred spirits 😃 I suppose the reason why I left it out is because it feels to me like a summation or a culmination film, rather than a film to START a Bergman journey, though again I totally get it as a place for “beginners” to go.
Very fitting that this video was chosen by my autoplay as I was just thinking about this set and what I plan on putting on my christmas list over these next few days. I have seen a number of Bergman films like Seventh Seal, Persona, Summer with Monika, Fanny and Alexander, and one other I can't remember the title to. I found that on first watch Persona was something that blew the doors open in my early era of my cinema journey where I had to rely on my school library in order to watch criterions. Seventh Seal was my next Bergman and I was mixed on it but i recently rewatched it with my dad just to see how I felt a few years later (roughly about 3 years since my last watch) and I now love it. I think Bill and Ted's most excellent Adventure with that same character of Death from Seventh Seal may have blurred my expectations so on my second watch I was prepared for the slow burn if you will. It was after watching it for the second time that the question of whether I should buy this or not came back and what great timing that youtube selected this while I am resting in preparation for my third week at my absolutely amazing and fulfilling professional job by playing my Switch.
I’m glad I watched this because I was almost going to just by the box-set blind. I will make some time to watch these recommendations 1st. The themes of these films do however sound like something I would find interesting.

I think this is consistent with descriptions on DVDbeaver that indicate Region free: www.dvdbeaver.com/ingmar_bergman_blu-ray.htm However, when I put a random Fellini set disc in such Region B player, it could NOT play. Unfortunately I cannot test all the discs so I cannot be absolutely sure, so you might want to ask Criterion directly if you need definitive verification.
@@DaisukeBeppu thanks so much, I do believe the Bergman set is region free. Have found multiple sellers who say so. Too bad its price has doubled since last time I checked. Time to wait for a sale!
Respectfully disagree. If you're thinking about it and you can afford it, just get the damn thing. This director has multiple works which are part of "The Canon" of cinema. The worst thing that can happen is you'll end up selling it on eBay (please keep it in mint condition, of course). Or maybe you'll love it until you die and it ends up at your estate sale where some young person will stumble upon this boxset and it will permanently blow their mind. At the end of the day, there are far worse things you can blow $300 bucks on.

However, when I put a random Fellini set disc in such Region B player, it could NOT play.
That is a very fair way of looking at it. And a very reasonable one at that. Thank you for sharing. Cheers.
I’m going into this set blind
I hope you enjoy your Bergman journey and please keep me updated as you proceed! Best regards.
