I couldn't agree more on the Lars Von Trier set. I absolutely treasure mine. He is my favorite filmmaker of all time. It might be my favorite box set that I own in my whole collection.
Thanks! You too! Can't do much about the background 😂 I don't have a space I can dedicate to. Glad you like the inserts though, they took some time to do!
The king of the boxset returns! I know how much you love discovering cinema through collections and 2023 definitely did not disappoint in that regard as highlighted by your comments. I’ve been on the fence about the Arrow Noir set, mainly because of the amount of unwatched Noir still in my collection, but it seems like one of the best collections to be had. Very excited for the couple of Radiance boxsets that dropped in ahead of the end of the year. I hear the World Noir set is a real winner as well. I’ve been trying to knock off a few Bergman films each year. His films are always weighty and thought priviiing but very satisfying. Thanks for sharing Sam and love the B roll shots used to break up the video. Great stuff 😀
Thanks Chris! I enjoyed watching your video on your favourite releases of the year! If you're on the fence still, I'd probably wait for a sale, I'm not sure how quickly those releases sell out, and, knowing Arrow they'll probably release a much discounted standard edition in the future anyways! I've got the World Noir #1 waiting to be watched! Did a little research on the films beforehand and all three look interesting! I'm very impressed with the End of Civilization box set from them, and I'm also now wanting the other box sets. Likewise with the Bergman! I've not tried to rush through the sets, one every so months is suiting me just fine, he's a filmmaker I'd not really engaged with at all before the BFI worked on these releases.
Sam, very good list of 2023 box sets! What about Second Sight and Criterion? Don’t you like them. I live in South America, therefore, my main collection is Criterion but a love UK 🇬🇧 boutique labels like Indicator, Radiance, Second Run, Arrow, Eureka and Second Sight! and I collect some titles of them as import them is quite expensive. Indicator Enter Santo was very good for me and I hope that Indicator would release more Santo box sets! I am still thinking if I order Indicator From Hollywood to Heaven box set!! From Arrow, I picked up the Bruce Lee and Psycho box sets. From Radiance, I ordered recently Cosa Nostra box set. I am planning in the next days to order Second Run Jerzy Skolimowski box set!
Thank you! I do have several releases from Sexond Sight in my collection, but I find their prices very off-putting. A lot of their recent work on the new French extremity (I'm sure is good quality, in terms of the packaging and extras) but I don't hold those films high enough to spend £40 on a single release. Likewise their sets have been increasing in price the past few years, Dawn/Texas/Drive all being very expensive, and I cannot afford on top of the other labels I collect. That being said, I utterly love their edition of The Colour of Pomegranates and Berlin Alexanderplatz! Criterion for me is another one which is difficult in the UK, their output is extremely limited and has a premium price point over the other labels. I have a solid collection of about 20 of their releases, but, for the time being own the films I'm most interested in.😊
@@SamDavies94 I agree with you as Second Sight is quite expensive, therefore, I have only the 4K TCM ,Martin and the 4k Dawn of the Dead box sets. I don’t like releases like Second Sight 4K Limited Edition Picnic at Hanging Rock because it is very expensive and because it includes the original novel!! For me movies are movies and books are books and must be released separately! For me Indicator is the best because I am able to pick up very good product for a very good competitive price.
I agree, especially when it inflates the price! I really love how accessible Indicator has been over the past year. Even their standard releases have all the same extras, which is wonderful the £5 end of year sale was amazing! I'm working on an Indicator- related video next so keep an eye out!
Excellent video (just discovered your channel). Yes, the Lars Von Trier Boxset looks amazing. It is on my wishlist but will probably wait until it drops in price. What is your favourite Von Trier film? Although not a new one, I can also recommend the Curzon Bong Joon Ho Boxset. The films are amazing and the set is such good quality. Curzon are doing an incredible job.
Thank you, and hope you like my content! The Trier set amazing, but it is a very high price. When I ordered it I got a £35 discount which just about pushed it over the edge for me. I have to admit that Bong's films have never really resonated with me. I've seen a lot of them (with the exception of barking dogs/the host) and the only one I thought was exceptional was Memories of Murder. I think I watched Parasite around the time that the class system genre in films was a little oversaturated, and so found it a bit on the nose. The set does look really nice and has a strong design, so I may be tempted if I see it on sale!
Sorry I missed your question. For me my favourite von Trier is a mix between Melancholia and Dancer in the Dark, both of me really blew me away. I need to revisit Dancer in the Dark, but I also have a feeling that Dogville may appear too, which I saw once back on dvd and really need to revisit! Which is yours?
No worries. Don't judge me 😄 but I thought The House That Jack Built had real impact and genuinely had something to say about creativity. I started to watch Nyphomaniac which has potential. AntiChrist's cinematography is outstanding but I need to rewatch that for a proper opinion. I am not familiar with the rest of his filmography that's why the boxset is attractive. I've heard very good things about Dogville.
@@SamDavies94 Memories of Murder is also my favourite. Such a dark and expansive film. The revelation that Bong spoke to the killer who later confessed I believe adds extra weight. Rewatch Parasite if you can, it's an exceptional film. It has a lot to say about the class divide in Korea which is a genuine problem. The Host is a lot of fun and shows Bong's humorous side. Haven't seen Barking Dogs either.
@EdLo3 No judgement at all! I think I've seen Jack about 4 times now, I quite like it, but it doesn't quite click with me and I can't tell why. I think watching the depression Trilogy before makes it a rather nice coda. Especially as themes and scenes are referenced within. Nymphomaniac I do enjoy, but I know a lot of people didn't like it. I found it very interesting and the way he creatively crafts essay-like techniques within is really fun. Antichrist I really love its one of those films that I watched and thought 'I've seen something great there but I don't know what' and on rewatch it's become one of my favourites. Dogville is very strong but quote long and the Brechtian nature of it is fascinating. I also really like Europa and find that The Five Obstructions is fascinating.
I didn’t know about the LVT Box!!! Automatically purchased. Thanks for this video! Greetings from Mexico 👍🏼
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Thank you!!

I'm glad you like the set as much as I do! I struggle to think of other sets that I own that are as good!
Thank you for this video, ive just picked up the LVT and Three Colours box set. Will you be getting the Béla Tarr box set from Curzon?
All the best to you & your channel in 2024.
Inserts look good; background not so much.
😜
Thanks! You too!
