  • Todd Bowles threw the challenge flag. This was widely considered to be a bad move
    During week 5 of the 2024 NFL season on Thursday Night Football, in the second quarter of a game between the Atlanta Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Bucs head coach Todd Bowles decided to throw a challenge flag on a Kirk Cousins fumble... even though it was blatantly obvious not a fumble, and even though a successful challenge actually would've benefitted the Falcons. This is a breakdown of the challenge that made no sense whatsoever

    As soon as I saw that challenge flag, I knew this was gonna be a video. Todd Bowles has this weird habit of challenging the dumbest plays. Like you're gonna lose either a few yards or a time out regardless. Why on earth would you throw the challenge flag?

    Not anyone is going to mention the intercept at the end of the game.
    This was not the dumb decision. The interception on 4th down was. It has been hours since the game ended and I still have no answer to WHY ANYONE would intercept a ball on 4th down.

      @stevebabiak6997 4 місяці тому +4

      There are some good reasons to do that, the ones I mention here obviously don’t apply to this video.
      Pass into the end zone from inside the 20 yard line - the touchback puts the ball at the 20, so a net gain.
      The other is where the defender sees a clear path ahead to get beyond the line of scrimmage or even to get a TD with a decent return.

      Stats. If there's anything I've noticed as a Falcons fan for decades is that NFC South rivals love themselves some useless stats.

    • @Coolthings246
      @Coolthings246 4 місяці тому +2

      Eh yeah it’s not a good decision but it’s not like the coach where they have time to make a playcall and think about it. The player doesn’t have much time to think and is relying on instincts and what he can do in the moment. Usually you would intercept that so he just probably wasn’t thinking and just went by common protocol.

    I disagree that losing a timeout in the first half is meaningfully less important than the second half. Having timeouts enables a team to extend any half to potentially score more points, and field goals and touchdowns count for the same number of points in either half.
    For example, it's an illusion to think that a missed field goal in the fourth quarter, with zeros on the clock, "lost" the game by one point, but a missed field goal the 1st quarter didn't. Points are points.
    Having said that, I agree with you that this was an epically bad decision. In a millisecond, my dim brain went to: "Wait, a fumble means a gain for Atlanta instead of a loss."

    Interesting thing is that had this play happened in the final two minutes of the game or in overtime and Bowles challenged and somehow won; the ball would have been placed at the site where Cousins had "fumbled" due to the "Holy Roller Rule", in which only the original fumbler can advance the ball. In effect, it would have been the same as an intentional grounding penalty (spot of the throw + loss of down, a virtual sack). The only legitimate reason to challenge the play in that scenario would be if there was a chance that the Bucs might have recovered the ball. In this scenario, though? Yeah, not a chance; and that lost TO might been useful enough down the line. #NFCSouth #CoachesTankDivision

  • @poohbear4702
    @poohbear4702 4 місяці тому

    I maintain that David's interception was a dumb decision too. It was 4th down, so it cost them about 9-10 yards. That may have made the difference in the game, since that extra yards might have turned it into a field goal instead of a punt with a minute left. If he just knocks it down, they save yards that could've won them the game.

  • @chicgamingqueens1647

    The challenge was fine as when something like this happens it becomes a close call situation, there's no grantee that a referee's call will stand or reverse, especially THIS YEAR ahmmm Virginia Tech-Miami.

    Nothing about the Bucs clock management after the Cousins INT with less that 2 min left? Game should have ended after that INT...

  • @rebornjm
    @rebornjm 4 місяці тому

    Yeah, I gotta say this was a dumb decision but I think the one that actually cost them the game ironically was the INT because if their linebacker actually knocked the ball down instead of intercepting the ball they’re on the Falcons 20 instead of being back at the 30 and that meant even with the flag they accumulated they still get an easy three-point. If they make the field goal, they would have to do is just as much time as they can then they would’ve been up by six which probably would’ve given them the game

    • @toddc3988
      @toddc3988 4 місяці тому

      Yeah.... But asking a football player to think that way in the heat of the moment is a big ask. Every instinct and all the training of your career is to intercept that ball. Unless it is a Hail Mary, grab it.

    • @rebornjm
      @rebornjm 4 місяці тому

      @@toddc3988 there’s also situational awareness that ball had little to no chance to be completed so when you’re thinking forth down and you can get to a place that’s closer to the goal line. You can take the deflection that was always taught to defensive players that when it’s fourth and long, you don’t go for the interception because most of the time the team is purposefully throwing the ball up so it can get intercepted.

      @@OfficialJaguarGator9In all seriousness, I wonder if Todd Bowles is looking to somehow become the next John McKay. In a more humorous vein, however, the only thing which would have made this challenge worse for Bowles is if, in a twist of irony, he had taken a telephone call on the sideline not too unlike Jim Mora (of the same Atlanta Falcons) had done against the same Florida Orange and White. Not only would he have lost a timeout due to the challenge, he also would have lost a tidy sum of money due to the resultant fine.
