Assassinated is the word. struck down seems too mild. I was a kid and I still grieve the assassination of President Kennedy and Senator Kennedy. The trauma is still with me. Those assassinations wiped out the hope of a better country and we can clearly see the result now.

I was nine when when JFK was assassinated so I didn’t really grasp the enormity of his death. It was different with RFK. I was so excited that he was running for president and most likely would get elected. I heard about his death while walking to my junior high and listening to my transistor radio. It was heartbreaking.

Yes, the loss of Robert Kennedy meant the loss of hope for our country. An excused death sentence should warrant a more serious life sentence. I don’t think he should be released if he still denies the crime.

@@Piano-Love - I agree. I thought part of getting granted parole involves taking full responsibility for the crime. If he is released, I think he should be immediately deported back to Palestine.

@@grumpyoldlady_rants He would not of "most likely" gotten elected in '68, even if he managed to win the Democratic nomination. Nixon would have been at least a 2-1 betting favorite vs RFK, as it was an unfavorable spot for the Dems in the '68 election, which was why Nixon won so easily. RFK would have ended up similar to Teddy, being an embarrassment and probably impregnating one of his many mistresses he had.

@@Piano-Love I'm not trying to come off as mean, but if you think the death of one individual, who just so happened to be the spoiled rich son of a bootlegger and career political operative with nefarious ties like Joe Kennedy, a son who was also a compulsive adulterer, meant the "loss of hope" for an entire nation, you might have some problems.

I don't know about that. I mean to have one President cheat on his wife while serving and be covered up by his Attorney General brother, the Bay of Pigs invasion kinda sounds like some full blown corruption was ripe with this family. But definitely President Trump has more charisma than both of these men.

RFK was extremely influential in consulting and advising his brother JFK, especially when it came to the Cuban Missile Crisis. RFK was the true unsung hero of that situation. Having lost my Dad when I was 11, and having seen him collapse and die on our kitchen floor due to a heart attack, my heart truly went out to his daughter when she discussed how she learned of her own father's death. Honestly, it isn't a matter of whether Sirhan would be a danger to society if let out of prison. It is a matter of punishment for doing a horrendous act. He assassinated a political figure because he didn't agree with certain views he had. And the topper is that he is unwilling to take responsibility for it or show any remorse. I say let him live out the rest of his days in prison because he deserves the punishment. Actions have consequences and Sirhan has to accept his consequences for what he did.

"Fifty-three Decembers ago." How sad. I'm glad Newsome denied the parole, but why does he get another chance "no later than Feb 2023"?
If he doesn't deserve parole now why would he within the next year? What a waste of time and money for the state, and what a tragedy for the family to keep going through this. What is wrong with the people on the parole board. I'm so sorry for Robert's family. Love from a Republican.
And I don't think whether he apologizes or not should have ANYTHING to do with it. How hard is it for anyone to fake an " I'm sorry"?

As the coroner testified, the fatal shot came _from behind_ and from close enough to leave powder burns. Sirhan fired from in front and never got within 3 or 4 feet of Kennedy. Photos taken during the shooting by a young man whose camera was seized by the authorities have never been published - probably destroyed. Parts of the door frame which contained bullet holes showing that more shots were fired than Sirhan's gun could hold were destroyed by the LAPD. The scribbling in Sirhan's notebook suggests that he was hypnotized into taking part, and the casual smear that he was upset that Kennedy supported Israel has been called into question.
Just a few of the facts which call into question Sirhan's guilt.
There can be no doubt that - just like JFK and MLK - the military industrial complex was behind RFK's assassination. Sad that most of his relatives apparently either don't know or discount the above, and that none of comments I scrolled through mentioned any of it.
Not surprising that the MSM put together this hit piece to smear Sirhan and shield the people behind the assassination.

@johnkesich8696 You're enlisting under the disreputable banner of "conspiracy theorist" coroner Thomas Noguchi, someone you feel might lend a touch of credence to your half-baked theories. But the coroner's report does not serve the second gunman theory at all. Sirhan lunged and stretched his arm around Karl Uecker (who was escorting Kennedy through the pantry) to place his gun at or near contact distance, firing several times including the fatal shot just behind the Senator's right ear. This is supported by eyewitnesses Vincent DiPierro, Juan Romero and Boris Yaro. Hence, the assertions by conspiracy hobbyists that Sirhan was never behind the Senator (he didn’t need to be), or that Sirhan was never "within 3 or 4 feet" (his outstretched arm sure was) are erroneous.

I honestly don't think Gavin Newsome will allow his release. I think it would be deemed an overall unpopular opinion and if it is one thing politicians do is follow the way of what the majority wants as it secures future election hopes. Besides, Newsome has said that RFK was one of his heroes, so there's that. Also, I think that he would agree that an act so egregious deserves life in prison as he denied Leslie Van Houton's (one of the Manson cult followers) release twice already. It is not about the age of the criminal and if they would still be a danger to society IMO, it is about receiving a fit punishment for a horrific crime and life in prison is fit. It also is a disadvantage that Sirhan killed a high profile political figure from a prominent family who was pretty well loved by most. I personally take issue with the fact that after all these years Sirhan refuses to take responsibility. That should have been a dealbreaker for him even being considered for parole IMO.

@@christophermanley3602 - yes, but forgiving does not mean forgetting. Forgive him... and then let him stay in jail to serve his complete sentence. That his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment is the final judgement and the Kennedys should not be put through this ordeal throughout their lives with the Parole Board reviewing the case every 15 years.

Without true, genuine remorse, I I’m astonished with the Parole Board’s rationale.
Normally, I’d be arguefor the commutation, but there’s nothing Mr Sirhan conveys that convinces me he wouldn’t harm someone again, even at his age.
He was given enough leniency with the life sentence. No remorse. No release. RFK’s death only hastened the fascist politicians of the former administration.

This was a brutal assassination and I remember it as a 12 year old. The loss was huge as his children have expressed with such sorrow. It was also a huge loss to our nation as I believe Robert F. Kennedy would have defeated Richard Nixon in the 1968 presidential election. Our nation would have taken a very different course and I believe would have been much better off if Kennedy had won the presidency. The 1960s had so many assassination, all of the victims being great leaders who were cut down including John F. Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X & Medgar Evers.
