Hey y'all, I am okay today! Just absolutely drained, understandably. I am not up for replying to individual comments like I usually do, but I wanted to let you know I am alright. Also, your comments are giving me some much needed laughs! Now that the scary part is over, it's kind of funny. Gotta laugh or else you'll cry! I really needed the chuckles today, so thank you for that and all the love/encouragement!

Running the vancomycin slower and premedicating with benadryl got rid of the red man syndrome for me. I was able to finish out my course by running it much slower!

Hey, Did you know that you can ask the people who work in the meat departments at grocery stores to cut up chicken and meat for you? Just give them the packages of whatever you're buying and request them to cube it for you. It's a great service that saves prep time. Keep hwaiting(fighting)! Have a great day, Cat

Ive had the same problem with vancomycin. That’s why I infuse it in double the time prescribed. Red man syndrome isn’t an allergic reaction, but a side effect when it’s given to fast (that’s why Benadryl doesn’t really work). Probably if you infuse in 3 hours (just lower the rate) you won’t have any problems whatsoever. At first they also said to me no more vancomycin, but 2 days later they restart it at a slower rate. They put my on 24 hour iv vancomycin (2 gram in 24 hours on a very slow rate) and I was totally fine, didn’t have any red man syndrome after.

    • @danielle5897
      @danielle5897 6 років тому +5

Agree!! There is a difference between allergic reaction and side effect. I have many drugs that make me sick (more side effects). I have always been taught be to careful when you say you have an allergy to medications because it could impact a physicians ability to prescribe needed medications and resort to using second string drugs. For instance, I had an antibiotic in my records as an allergy because someone mistook my side effect as an allergy so they wrote for a second string drug and it was not killing the infection in my blood as fast as a first strung drug would have. Once we cleared up the confussion and switched to the medication that would have been choosen in the first place, I was better in no time. We simply treated the side effects before they occured or as they occured. I ALWAYS mention meds that have made me sick but preference it with what the side effects were. From there they can determine if it's worth the side effects or not.

It’s definitely a rate related issue when it comes to vancomycin iv. I’ve seen it in chart records, but never in person and now this is something i can’t forget.

I just want to thank you for posting these videos and showing how you deal with your chronic illnesses. I have an autoimmune disorder and have been refusing to wear a mask because I was embarrassed. I love going to concerts and events but I would always get sick after because of all the people and germs my body couldn't handle. After watching your videos, I finally bought a mask and wore it to a concert last night for the first time! I was so nervous but I got so many compliments- even one of the musicians on stage pointed at my mask and mouthed "cool mask!" It feels good to do the right thing for my body and I really owe it to you and your confidence. 💜

I have a similar reaction. Half dose benadryl pre med, 3x time (3 hrs) and don't take within 3 hours of any other antibiotic. Then I rarely need the other half dose.
It's a hapten response that is mostly commonly seen with pushed antibiotics (as in most times you see one is with the IV push). It of itself is not an allergic reaction but can lead to one.
I spent a whole summer on the outside of a hapten response dying tissue culture during an undergrad internship and 6 days over 6 weeks inside.
I have multiple anaphylaxis triggers. It was a pharmocologist from the local CF clinic that helped us figure out a protocol as this was when MRSA was just raising its ugly head. (She was a friend from before my accident when I did basic CF pseudonymous antibiotic research in the late '80's.) Mary Frey has the same reaction (and this week too by coincidence). My friend suggested, (called her as soon as I saw red man starting), to have your team talk with a pharmocologist (not immunologist the most common first stop) attacked to your local CF clinic. If possible, since its know vancomycin works on the bug to stay with it if possible and not go to the second tier antibiotics from a stain resistance development perspective (again why the CF pharmocologist). Over use and misuse of antibiotics is one of the main reasons resistian a trained develop.
That the 2 cents worth from your friendly old microbiologist's corner. Oh the iche rivals measles and chicken pox... Ask your mom for the tricks to cope with it scratching (which is what Harlow was trying to figure out. You where scratching in the wrong spots for the practice but didn't have the stuff that makes an actually alerting thing. Onyx did the same thing and that's my dog behaviorist theory anyway).
Just passing this along. You figure out something; you always do.

I have this reaction to Vanco as well! Highly unpleasant and I'm sorry you had to go through that. First time they were treating me for sepsis and becuase of how quickly I was going down hill they wanted to get it in me as fast as possible. That plan backfired lol! The red man's syndrome stuff almost landed me in ICU but thankfully, like you, the acute phase didn't last more than 4 hours. We cautiously gave it a try about a year later with the oral form to treat Cdiff and whilst I still had some itching nothing like the RMS. About a year ago I had meningitis and they really wanted to use iv vanco what we found was that if we infuse it SUPER slow than I don't get the reaction, this was inpatient though so very diffrent circumstances but maybe there's still a chance if you absolutely have to in the future. Praying that they can truly find SOMETHING to treat with that doesn't make you sicker. Hang in there Jaquie!
Was wierd watching this, had a port placed about 36 hrs ago and seems like I'm having a histamine response which is turning me red and itchy so I feel for you! Praying!

I could not give it a thumbs up as I felt so bad for you, but you are always a thumbs up, I pray that made sense. Sweet socks.Kudos to you Jaquie, you are excellent at being efficient with the raw feeding, makes me keep getting better at it, I am a sloppy woman at it but getting better, mind you I have been feeding raw to dogs for years now but with my family I could never get more than 1-2 days in order as we also had 3 sick senior dogs with individual needs that we rescued. They taught me lots on how to feed myself and my family, now we hardly eat any junk and if we do we make it ourselves or look for really natural stuff, no process or by products, wow are we all better. In fact I hardly ever get those mild gastroparesis issues anymore. Wow you started turning red as you started complaining of the itchy head, you can see it in the video. Forgive me, if you are reacting to the med why take more? Did I miss something in your explanation? Wow when I turned red like that it would then go crazy into hives too and start my mast cell craziness. So sorry for all that happening to you. Maybe ask your Doc on more natural things, it may be worth aksing

I had it with vank when I went septic because they left a percutaneous nephrostomy tube in my kidney that would no longer drain as it had somehow come out of place. There was urine in the line that still had some access to the inside of my body. I was in terrible pain, with a fever that continued to rise, along with lots of nausea, chills, & incoherence at times. So I finally made the dreaded trip to the ER. They discovered I had staph in my blood & urine at that time. As soon as the vank was administered, I knew I had MORE trouble. Almost immediately my scalp got very itchy & then it began to BURN. I have hot flashes from my hormonal imbalance due to polycystic ovarian syndrome, so I know hot, but this was insanely hot. I felt like my scalp was on fire, the fire spread to my face & began to move it’s way down my body. I didn’t know but I was almost as red as you when the nurse walked back into the curtain & dropped some things as she gasped. They quickly determined it was red woman’s (haha that gave me a chuckle when you said it!) syndrome. They quickly called for IV Benadryl & pushed it FAST. Another dose followed not long after. While feeling like I was in the 6th circle of hades, I started having tightness in my chest & a bit of trouble breathing. I feel it was part anxiety, part reaction to the med. I now list it as my only allergy. I have been given gentomyacin, rosephnin (spelling?) without incident as I have a rare genetic lottery kidney disease called Cystinuria & I rapidly form very rare/hard cystine kidney stones. I have had 59 procedures since 1999 to remove stones, 36 of which punctured my back (percutaneous), the rest went up the urethra (ureteroscopy). Due to my incredibly active stones, I have had lots of UTI, bladder, & kidney infections. I’ve also had pneumococcal pneumonia, strep throat many times, & so on. So I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of antibiotics, but none were as bad as vancomycin. I am sorry to hear of your recent troubles. I know you probably hear this often, but I think you handle your health issues very well & love your upbeat/positive attitude. Sending prayers your way that you can put all this behind you soon, as you have many other things! Hang in there & God bless!

Jaquie, With your port, any time you access it or put any Med thru your port, should you not have gloves on (and when opening caps on the syringes using in your port)?? At work we have to for any central lines and when I had my picc, I also have to use gloves any time I flushed or changed the IV bag.

Hope they can figure something out, I've seen that if they pre dose w benadryl and slow it down super slow that even if you had a reaction once you might not have it again. I hope that's the case for you bc my hubby n i both had mrsa n I knw how limited the antibiotics are for that. Im glad the rms went away fairly quickly so you didn't need to goto the er. Lots of prayers for you Jaquie and your family. ❤💜🐕

I experienced red mans syndrome a few years ago while on vancomycin. It started while I was still in the hospital, but nobody seemed concerned. The rash continued to spread as we continued the infusions at home. Home nursing was very alarmed at how red and itchy I was. They called my Dr who said that we were to continue with Vanco and I was to take Benedryl for the itching. Over the next 4-5 days the rash went away, but I was miserable while it lasted. I had never heard a name for the red, itchy rash until seeing your vlog. It's funny that red mans syndrome is a common side effect while taking Vanco, but no one on my medical team at the time seemed to know about it.

I'm on both antibiotics at the moment and I take the pill form of Benadryl about 5 minutes before my Vancomycin or I get red man syndrome which I've had before. It's a pain in the butt tho to deal with. Along with everything else we have going on.Mary Frey was talking about this issue aswell. Sending you healing thoughts and prayers

This happen to me when I was on IV Ceftriaxone. A cool or lukewarm bath helped me the best. I also tried the Aveeno baby soothing bath treatments for eczema as well, but I don’t know if it helped! It definitely didn’t hurt so it’s worth a try! I know the itching burn is crazy uncomfortable. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this now on top of everything else 😢 stay strong ❤️

    • @sunshi1583

I get Red Man’s when I’m on Vanco! I just got off it for my MRSA in my lungs a few weeks ago. I slow it down to about an hour and a half or 2 hours. I haven’t turned red but I get super hot and itchy all over. Especially in my head and chest. I’m so sorry it happens to you too!! It’s never fun I know. The things we have to go through to stay healthy.
