  • When was the last time you saw one of these?!
    Probably never.
They were sold mainly through the catalogue companies like Littlewoods in the 1980s and into the 1990s under the Rotel brand name and made by Predom Zelmer in Poland.
It's a budget cylinder vacuum cleaner but is surprisingly tough, the main body being made of pressed steel. Even though it it's meant to be cheap the floor head is actually really nice to use.
I show the inside of the cleaner to demonstrate why Poland is not renowned for manufacturing a quality product. If I'm honest, some aspects of the standard machine are frankly dangerous!
Even if it is pretty terrible, I can't help rather liking it :)

In Poland it was known as Zelmer type 96 ;) I have one from 1977 but with changed motor. Last month I saw version without winding (type 95) for sale here in Poland.
Paper bags fot it are still available in Poland.

Anything that happens to the engine (f.e. short circuit) will not become dangerous for the user. The engine is held by a rubber gasket on one side and a plastic beam on the other. The electrical voltage on the main body will never appear. The model was constructed in the 70s.

Conection box is made of ceramic ;) Most household devices made in Poland to late 80-s have ceramic boxes ;) I like this solution (with 6 cables), it make changing motor/switch/cable winding easy ;)
This mechanism of holding cable is most reliable from all mechanism used in Poland. I have 3-4 Zelmer vaccums and only with this one I don't have any problems ;) They try to hold cable drum, but it was weak.
For insulation of this non-cover cables you should stick capacitor into holder below brush holder.
There same changes in it to vaccums made for polish market. Pipe with screw was realy realy rare here. All plastic parts was white/light gray, except vaccums made for export, but from some reasons they was sold here, mostly because they was poor quality and they was called "waste od export" (odrzut z eksportu), or was made after 1989 ;) And motors was another. We don't have here 900W motors. This type of motor you put in (type 300) have 750W, and was made by ZZSD(Zaklady Zmechanizowanego Sprzętu Domowego - Zelmer), and it was the most powerful motor for these vaccums for polish market. This model of vaccum was made probably to middle 90-s. I remember one that my aunt get in 1992 as weding gift :D

I've got 3 vacuum cleaners with the same motor and I've only had to replace the bearings in one of them. these motors were very solid. I found one thet was all in rust and it looked hopeless, but it runs almost like brand new. They were very loud, but other motors that zelmer used were silent. What happened to the original motor? What was broken?
Please show us alfa k2-l vacuum cleaner if you could find one.
