A person shouldn’t have to waste that much money on a wedding. You are just as married no matter what the cost is. If the parents didn’t treat her like trash then maybe she would have helped them out and they would have saved face.
Rich people, especially, old money, have certain rules and protocols for who they interact with and let into their inner circle. The parent's failure to pay for their share of the wedding was a breach of trust that could not have been repaired. Old money knows that due to their wealth, they are targets from an early age. The fact that the parents could not come up with the money led to the presumption that the marriage was for financial gain and not for love. As much as this was not about money it was about money.
