Why Submarines In The U.S. Navy Are Getting An Expensive Update

  • Submarines are the cornerstone of the U.S. Navy's strategic plan to patrol the world's oceans, but cost overruns and supplier problems could slow down the pace of submarine production.
CORRECTION: At 5:47, this video misstated the year in which the first Ohio-class submarine was delivered. The correct year is 1981.

Keep in mind, the US Navy leased that same Gotland class submarine for over a year, constantly running war games with it. They learned everything there is to learn about diesel electric subs, how to track them, hunt them down, and destroy them. The US Navy is well aware of the strengths and weaknesses of every class of submarine on the planet. If they felt they needed a diesel electric submarine, trust me, they would have some.

Here’s one other point CNBC forgot to mention about Diesel/Electric subs. It’s not just a matter of their range and time on station issues they don’t have the speed to chase down most surface combatants or a carrier battle group. Moreover, the faster they (D/E subs) attempt to go the easier they are to detect. Nor do they have same space available for bigger and better sensor packages that nuclear submarines have.

US Navy's submarine fleet is THE crucial part of the service and the only part of the service that shouldn't spare any cost for an R&D or the number of deployed vessels. If the cost of the fleet becomes unsustainable, the Navy has to cut else where cause the subs are too valuable to endure cutbacks, weather in development of the next generation of vessels or in a total number of deployed subs. And when I say Navy should cut anywhere else, I mean just that. Even the Congress law mandated 11 aircraft carriers should be on the table. Although our aircraft carriers are the pinnacle of US power projection and have been for the last 70 years, they won't be as important as submarines in the unthinkable case of a major war against a near peer power.
Our submarine technology is second to none. Although some of the overmatch we had over our adversaries has eroded when we were bogged down in a counterinsurgency warfare in Afghanistan and Iraq, and our enemies had time to catch up, submarine tech has stayed on the cutting edge of capability, stealth, sensors and other classified technology that is installed in them.. We are in the process of building the new Columbia class nuclear ballistic missile submarines to replace the Ohio class but we're also in the opening stages of developing a next gen SSG(N), better known as the Virginia class submarine replacement, which will be more akin to the Seawolf class of the late Cold War than to Virginia class. Virginias are incredibly capable subs but they were mostly developed for the littoral water warfare, spying and executing land attack missions with their Tomahawk missiles. SSN(X) will be more of the deep diving hunter killers capable of destroying the best that the Russians or Chinese can throw at us.
Times are changing and once again we have to stay vigilant, together with our friends and allies, against the adversaries that won't have any moral doubts in exploiting our weakness or a perceived lack of vigilance. Submarines are best for that task. Especially US submarines that are superior to anything sailing in the depths of the world's oceans.

I see a bigger problem for the USA and that is parts . There are way too many systems in our ships, submarines, and aircraft that come from overseas vendors. Look at what has happened to car companies waiting for chips from another country. What a way to defend a country! I saw it many times during a 43 year career in the defense department and every time I raised this issue, it was brushed aside. I was on a ship in 1978 that had system that was controlled by Navair regulations and I could not work on the equipment because I had not been to school. If the ship had this system installed it could land and launch helicopters as long as the system was working. If the system went down, no helicopter landing or launching. Navair sent a factory trained mechanic to fix it. When, after three different port visits and the mechanic working on it in each port could not fix it, I asked to look at it. In a few hours I had it working perfectly. Regulations are put into place to help us, but sometimes they tie our hands. This is a weak point that needs to be addressed. Competition between different branches can do a lot of harm.

I totally agree and I believe that the US should open more chip production factories in the US under national budget. In 20 years when our jobs are replaced by the artificial intelligence that eats chips, we need those chip productions to stay safe to keep the AI running, so our GDP can stay in the way it is.

US Navy must consider to invest in:-
    (1) Diesel electric Attack Submarines (SSKs)
    (2) Diesel electric Aircraft Carriers (CVV)
    (3) Minesweepers
    (4) Nuclear Cruisers with Electromagnetic Rail Guns & DEWs.
Its easier to mass manufacture SSKs & CVVs during a conflict in comparison to Nuclear Ships.
Nuclear Cruisers/Destroyers, CVNs, SSBNs & SSNs will allow US-Navy to have almost unlimited range with the only Limitation being food supplies for crew.

Having worked on subs and ships of the USN for 50 years, I'd keep right with God if I were you.Stupid is as stupid does and there is nothing sailor proof.I repaired systems that hadn't worked from the time the vessel left the shipyard that built it 20 years from the time it left. Not complex stuff but conveyors and generators and controllers. Stuff that I was trained to repair in EM "A" School while I was serving in the Navy but the shops can't do it now. So what else can the sailors not fix today? I have retired now but I've no doubt that things have gotten worse since I retired 8 years ago. The average time it takes to get a carrier out of the yards on a refit and repair has went from 11 months to 4 years.I would go down main passageways on the ships and see all the transformers and other electrical equipment choked with dust in the vent grids. I shudder to think how bad the controllers are as they have moving parts unlike transformers. The line voltage regulators were catching on fire on lots of ships when I retired and they supply the missile launchers and combat stations for the aircraft. Many of the ships were no longer water tight as the mct's had the blocks drilled out by the sailors to pull cable thru or the stuffing tubes were rotted and falling over on the weather decks.Maintenance is no longer a priority so no matter how many new ships they build if half the systems are none functioning how can they accomplish the mission? Hire some more minorities and womenf and see how that works out for you. 50 years and I only had 3 minorities who could learn and do the work.2 of them were Filipinos and one was black. I had women apprentices who told me they didn't have to do the work because they were going to be bosses. When I reported them for not doing what was required of them to have me sign off on their work cards they sent them to another mechanic and told me they were a protected class.I asked: If a system like steering has lost power how is woman being a protected class going to keep the ship from running into another ship or aground? We as a country are screwed if our military has this type of force to protect us.
