I've paid 60 for version 5.xx and 6.xx for years, including the free updates nearly every week. I've tried crippled versions of others, and found no reason whatsoever to use anything but Reaper. As a major bonus, we get the excellent tutorials on all the features of Reaper by Kenny Gioia, straight from the website of Reaper. No need to search Google.

That, of course, is true of essentially every DAW. Stock plugins are excellent across the board. If your mixes suck its not because you didn't buy Waves Mercury. 😉
There are lots of great free plugins out there, the vast majority of what I use is free. I don’t worry about whether it’s the Reaper plug-in or something else that’s free and good. But sometimes the Reaper plugin is the best of its kind (for me)
Kind of funny, one reason I chose Reaper is I didn’t want to pay a premium for GBs of plug-ins I didn’t need, figuring I’d slowly build a library of specific ones I wanted. So far, I’ve only used the Reaper plugins after learning how to use them from watching Kenny and a few free ones to experiment with. The only plug-ins I’ve bought are a couple of instruments (MT Drum Kit and a contrabass). For MIDI guitar my favorite ended up being the built in sampler plug-in with samples I recorded of my guitar).
Hahaha ... "unfortunately they come free with Reaper". Loving it! ❤ Btw.: it is always ALWAYS a joy to watch your videos. I am always learning something new. In this case I didn't know Reaper can do pitch correction. Veryy appreciated! All the best!
Reaper is obviously designed with the utmost importance being placed on the customer. I've invested over $1,000 over the year in Pro Tools for all the upgrades and new additions. I have totally switch to Reaper. And I used to follow you Kenny when you would give tutorials on Pro Tools and I'm loving your tutorials now Reaper is all I need. You are a great sensei
Some people complain that Reaper ‘s plugins don’t have “character”, but that’s exactly why I like them. Plus, they don’t fool my ears with analogue look.
Some JS plugins have a lot of character, like the 1175 compressor that Kenny mentionned or Bad Buss Mojo, the Fairly Childish compressor (Fairchild), the Major Tom compressor or Huge Booty. There is about a dozen JS plugins that add character and distortion, some are very good. The only problem I find with them is, the ranges are often way too large, so it's just a matter of editing the script to reduce the range to more reasonable values and boom, done.
Kenny please make a new full fledge mixing series like the one you used to do on groove 3. All of us will be grateful if you show us mixing with stock plugins. Learning from you has been a game changing experience for the reaper fraternity. Please take notice of my request as it is also the request of millions of reaper users out there! Thank you. :)
How many of you have paid the $60 recommended fee? I love Reaper and want it to continuously improve so I paid before I ever even recorded anything. My conscience is clear :-) I love Reaper. Did I say that already?
Finally bought Reaper the other day after a lot of use and a lottt of Kenny's videos- thanks for all the excellent lessons! I probably wouldn't have bought it if I hadn't learned how to use it so well. The large selection of well-designed plugins really helps you learn how to put the pieces together and focus your time, rather than bouncing around buying and trying out plugins based on recommendations when you don't even really know enough yet. And all the other available free plugin packs give you a lot of room to explore and try out other things. If you end up buying some plugins at some point, you've saved money already in my mind
It's only been out for a few weeks, but it's BETTER than the third party limiter that I've been using!! It gives you a graphical representation of the wave form as the signal is processed!! I swear to god, REAPER RULES!!! **F** protools!!! All protools wants to do is rape your wallet!!
Reaper is seriously the best DAW out there, I have used it for years and love it. I have spent a lot on plugins only to realize later I have wasted A LOT of money!!!
I was a little disappointed by the title, but - as you mentioned before - the Reaper installed plugins are more than sufficient for most recordings. I have a few other that I prefer while mixing, but whenever I start mixing, I still find myself starting off with the Rea plugins (and often end up using them). To my idea they also blend in with the workflow and learning curve of Reaper itself. Which is a bonus imo. Also, you provide us with enough lessons to get the most out of the Rea plugins. Thanks, Kenny and never stop doing this 😅
I have used these plugins for years with the purchase of Reaper! I only bought one plugin separately all the years I have been using this software. I highly recommend it if you are considering buying it. I pay $60.00 every two years.
Hi Kenny amazing vid as usual! When you were explaning theReaeq features I noticed that you said something about the phase that is introduced when we aply an eq boost or cut, could you make a video explaning what is this and why is important to ajust or how to correct phase issues?
Wow Kenny, I'm kinda late to the game and I am so impressed with these plugins. Just so well made. I had a commercial license for REAPER because I used it for work but not musically, and so I didn't really explore all the things you can do with it. Now that I'm not using it for work I've downgraded to a personal license and actually playing around with musical uses. REAPER has always been reliable and solid for all my work-related mixing purposes, so happy to see how good these utilities are. PS -- I used REAPER to mix down and clean up multitrack spoken word recordings, and I found the most useful tool in my arsenal for that was REAfir, which didn't get mentioned here.
The more REAPER tutorials I watch, the more am loving. I installed the evaluation version 15 days ago but I think the amount of knowledge base is available is insane and will take more than 60 days to finish. But thank God I Found REAPER, I was collecting money for Ableton Live and am still 500$ short of buying it and REAPER is my savior. This DAW is insane.
Hello. Kenny! I am a Korean Reaper user and a fan of you. Through your videos, I am learning little by little how to use the reapper and how to approach the sounds. Of course, I can't understand everything in your video as I'm not a fluent English speaker. However, your videos are helping to understand a lot just by looking at them. All of my music is made using Reaper. thank you! Always be healthy and happy. 😁
I would suggest you to turn on the UA-cam automatically generated subtitles. Even if they are automatically generated, Kenny speaks very clearly. It must be easy for UA-cam to recognize what he's saying. :)
Gotta love that price point. Reaper really is an all-in-one solution and the only thing standing in the way of you and amazing results is the amount of time you're willing to put in to learn what I consider to be relatively easy software once you understand the principles of recording and audio production. For what is a staggeringly low price, anyone can be a master with a little inspiration.
Love reatune for finding notes played in a track but never used them to pitch correct. Will be fun try it out next time I'm putting together a melody. Thanks.
These 5 FX's needed for all DAW's out there. The FX missed to be allready installed is an Rea Mix FX to give presets for transform any mix without any loss of time!!That needs to buy it as external plugin.
Now that I’m on the other side of healing and feeling lots better, I’m getting back into recording again. This video has stirred my creative juices once again. Thanks again mr gioia 🎤🎼🥁🎧🎹🎸🎻🎯
I agree these are great, but I just bought DearVR to mix in the box with headphones. This is my go to to monitor Reaper. You only have to see, if you don't put this plugin on your master channel. Because if you render your project, the sound will differ from what you really want. So put it in your monitor tab, in the upper right of Reaper. There is another product that's new from Eventide, but this out of scope of Reaper.
At first I was like "oh, that's new. I hope that he explains clearly what's the gain of each of these". Then I got it when you bring ReaEQ. Clever way to set the point about expensive plugins that do basic stuff. Edit: Ooooh, I forgot it was Black Friday stuff. That explains a lot!
one of the commonly used Reaper plugins I use comes from the JS section: Channel Time Delay. Great for a single guitar track to be spread out Left and Right something like a double Pan (how I can best describe it). I also use it with synths, backing vocals.
I might go broke buying these. But after talking to a friend I might seriously consider going back to Garage Band because I like how its effects look like a digital representation of rack mounted equipment, where I can just turn a knob or two until it sounds good. It is a little frustrating that Reaper's plugins are all sliders or boxes to manually punch in say your delay time. I'd rather just turn a knob until it sounds good. But I do love Reaper and all of its capabilities. For now I'm re-amping vocals into a standalone Fender Tube Reverb Tank and adding the effect to a new track, then blending the original dry vocal with the re-amped spring reverb vocal. It's fun, but it's time consuming, and if you get it wrong you have to do it again.
What a damage have you done to all these people wanted to buy new plugins and had all that money ready on the side now they have too much money don't know what to do with it, big problems ! Kenny is killer ! Awesome !
I am a sucker for vintage looks but i am aware about the quality of Reaper plug ins. I use a lot Abbey Road stuff like compressor, tape emulator and reverbs. But on the master bus i always use realimit, such a handy and simple to use tool.
I had my credit card out and ready to go, but now I wont get to build my credit score :( lol. Thanks for the awesome explanation of these FX, I have skipped over them because they look simple but now I have added them into my template to use in my process, so thank you.
Less is more. Learn the tools you have at your disposal. Trust your ears not your eyes. It's not because a plugin looks cool that it sounds great or better. Thanks Kenny. Great video.
You got me Kenny... 🤣😂😅 I was wondering what effects you favoured that WEREN'T already in Reaper.... I would still love to see you do a video on Reeq which comes in the Reapack extentions with its mid side functions etc..
Thank you for the video! It's 32-bit but Bionic Supa Delay (free) is my go-to because I do a lot of live performance stuff and I love the controls. I use the FRComp87 limiter/compressor. These are nice plugins, Reaper is such an awesome tool. Love it.
reaper's EQ and compressor are mostly fine. I'm not a fan of the setup and interface for the reverb at all though. It's free so no big deal. I still use an old Sony DX reverb on drums because it's super light on cpu. I have a few other inexpensive ones that work well for specific things.
Sometimes using a certain plugin is like using your non dominant hand to write. You can learn to do it. But using another plugin for the job might be more natural for you. I really like the free Kilohearts filter and 3 band eq for instance.
Long time subber. Thanks for all your concise and informative tutorials on using this wonderful powerful DAW. Your work is helping to produce the future artists and engineers. And let's not forget guys like me who like to record in the man cave in sweatpants.
wow the bonus plugin was reatune..spent a few hours today messing about with an acoustic in open tuning in Reatune getting baritone guitar sounds, of late reatune is my favourite...great minds think alike, im so getting white frames on my next pair of bifocals lol
Kenny! I watch your video at the last few years ... this is informative, creative and for me is was very helpful at all. Big thanks! And now i am very happy because i can see the man behind the videos ... :) I wish my best...
I bought Softube's Amp Room, as it's very good for (rock/metal) amp sims and cabs it contains and was on offer as a Black Friday deal @ 69 éuros. However, on trying their version of reverb and delay, it did NOT match up at all to Reaper's own plugins. Following your tutorials on 'Recording your band' episodes 10 and 11 I think, on adding Reverb and Delay, I have yet to find anything to surpass those plugins and/or your tutorials. Note that those have been saved as track templates for me, for every scenario :) Thank you for your continued support.
I love it buddy. I'm a fan! K.G. RESPECT. you've made my learning experience really easy and amazing. Thank you so much for your time and knowledge!!! I'm getting pretty good with this d.a.w. Love brother!!!!!!!!
Other have been slapping the camera for a long time, he just ripped it off. And you're right about the UI too, but don't tell the fanbois, they'll get mad. ua-cam.com/video/q_zrgBobQV4/v-deo.html
Great video as always Kenny. Although I like the Reaper plugs, they as good as high priced plugins on the Market. For me, they are not the nicest visually... Are there any GUI skins available to download?
Now we just need a new Groove 3 Mixing Course just showing us, mixing only with stock plugins by Kenny Gioia or is there already some kind of these stuff? But why inside Groove 3. A mixbreakdown inside UA-cam would be nice. Greets
I love the Video! The best Misnomer video on UA-cam! Another great part is that, in the beginning, you forgot to mention that when you buy the plugins, you get Reaper for free!😁
Was thinking about that for a while now and after seeing this video , I get your point. I will do that .It's well deserved . Thanks again for what your doing Kenny -cheers
Also: waveshaper distortion is fantastic for adding everything from subtle saturation to the ugly. Reaverb will do IR amp and pedal simulations - upping its usefulness big time. Dirt Squeeze Compressor - your drums will take out a restraining order on you. Free plugins I would never do without: - TDR Nova - if I were stranded on a desert island…, - TDR Slick EQ - The 2 free compressors and free saturation plugin from Klanghelm. And while I’m not a big advocate of spending money on plugins… - MJUC - oh baby! Cheap and incredible. - Burnley 73 - on every single track! - Rocket - c’mon, an 1176 for 25 bucks?! How could you not.
I love your tutorials and advice. While I use Reaper plug ins I also use a few outside ones but I have learned that the Reaper ones generally sound just as good as the ones I bought. I think I'm just happier with the look of the interface on some of my other plug ins.
You're right, Kenny. I bought a suite of fancy mastering plugins thinking I could get better results than the ones that came with Reaper. I mastered the same project with Reaper's tools first and then with the third-party ones. I couldn't get better results than what I had already achieved with Reaper's plugins alone. Now the only reason I sometimes open the third-party plugins is to have something pretty to look at :-)
Reaper is the only program that brings me joy when they request payment for the next version. They truly deserve it.
So true...

I had my credit card out and ready to go, but now I wont get to build my credit score :( lol. Thanks for the awesome explanation of these FX, I have skipped over them because they look simple but now I have added them into my template to use in my process, so thank you.
So the title could be "Top 5 FX Plugins You Get For Free When You Buy REAPER" 🙂
The anti-clickbait technique...very rare... but effective. (-:
Another title could have been Top 5 FX Plugins You DON'T Need To Buy !
@ Or the top 5 FX plugins you never knew you had....that could work as well.
I think in these crazy Black Friday sales the chosen title works way better. Good job Kenny!
Kenny totally got me with this one, it wasn’t until the second or third plug-ins that I realized it and had a good chuckle about it.
Thank you for your work, I enjoyed watching each of your videos and learned a lot thanks to you.I wish you all the best!
Kenny 'Klickbait' Gioia - love it! You even teased a bonus plugin which never appeared. Clever tactics...
Less is more. Learn the tools you have at your disposal. Trust your ears not your eyes. It's not because a plugin looks cool that it sounds great or better. Thanks Kenny. Great video.
Thanks for hitting the nail on the head Ian...
You got me Kenny... 🤣😂😅
I was wondering what effects you favoured that WEREN'T already in Reaper....
I would still love to see you do a video on Reeq which comes in the Reapack extentions with its mid side functions etc..
Thanks Kenny. Your videos are of great value.
Thank you for the video! It's 32-bit but Bionic Supa Delay (free) is my go-to because I do a lot of live performance stuff and I love the controls. I use the FRComp87 limiter/compressor. These are nice plugins, Reaper is such an awesome tool. Love it.
OH. The added taps in ReaDelay! I gotta change my knickers.
you GOT me, lol. i should have known.<
you're the king, kenny. i love your vids, and they've made me love reaper more each time you release one.
reaper's EQ and compressor are mostly fine. I'm not a fan of the setup and interface for the reverb at all though. It's free so no big deal. I still use an old Sony DX reverb on drums because it's super light on cpu. I have a few other inexpensive ones that work well for specific things.
"Sorry folks! You can't buy it because it already comes with Reaper!"
DAMN! That was epic!!
Sometimes using a certain plugin is like using your non dominant hand to write. You can learn to do it. But using another plugin for the job might be more natural for you.
I really like the free Kilohearts filter and 3 band eq for instance.
Reaper ships with anything you could possibly need, well stated
Thanks for all your content Kenny...☮
I love the cheeky "as a reaper user, it is already installed" every single time, delivered as serious as leslie nielsen would...
I wish my best...
Note that those have been saved as track templates for me, for every scenario :)
Thank you for your continued support.
I love it buddy. I'm a fan! K.G.
RESPECT.
you've made my learning experience really easy and amazing.
Thank you so much for your time and knowledge!!! I'm getting pretty good with this d.a.w.
Love brother!!!!!!!!
Great tutorial, Kenny! You showed me some other options and how to use them. So helpful. Thanks.
I love when he slaps the camera in the intro lmao. Also I love the stock effects fine, but I hate that they don't have a UI. Drives me nuts.
Other have been slapping the camera for a long time, he just ripped it off. And you're right about the UI too, but don't tell the fanbois, they'll get mad.

Yeah. Good idea.
Kenny! Great to see you. :)
Excellent. Reaper rocks. Kenny is the best
Was thinking about that for a while now and after seeing this video , I get your point. I will do that .It's well deserved . Thanks again for what your doing Kenny -cheers
so glad i switched 2 months ago!
Also: waveshaper distortion is fantastic for adding everything from subtle saturation to the ugly.
Reaverb will do IR amp and pedal simulations - upping its usefulness big time.
Dirt Squeeze Compressor - your drums will take out a restraining order on you.
Free plugins I would never do without:
- TDR Nova - if I were stranded on a desert island…,
- TDR Slick EQ
- The 2 free compressors and free saturation plugin from Klanghelm.
And while I’m not a big advocate of spending money on plugins…
- MJUC - oh baby!
Now the only reason I sometimes open the third-party plugins is to have something pretty to look at :-)
I am totally BUYing into these plugin recommendations. Thanks Kenny!
