    I’ve really missed the sew alongs on your channel. I’ve been sewing for 60 years and still get new skills from you. The pocket template, the way you created a new zipper stop, and the stitching line as a fold guide were new or long forgotten techniques. More of these please.

    This tutorial was excellent! Loved watching every detail….pressing, zip fly, belt loops, waist and leg hem facings, topstitching, understitching, button hole, snaps…. Questions: stitch length for topstitching? Can most machines sew thru all thicknesses where belt loops are finally sewn down?
    Your patience and skill fully demonstrated, making it all look easy and logical! It took you a long time to film, sew, and edit! Thank you so much! I’m again inspired as most viewers must be!

      What a lovely comment! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! As far as stitch length for topstitching, it is totally up to you and what you like the look of. With jeans and when I'm using a heavier topstitching thread, I like to go up to a 3.5 length. Because this was just a cotton twill (not as heavy as denim) I kept my stitches at the regular 2.5. As far as sewing through belt loop thickness, I think with the fabric I used here, it would be easy for pretty much all machines. If you are using a heavier denim, though, I would recommend using a rubber mallet and pounding the daylights out of the belt-loops before sewing. This compounds the fibers and flattens them nicely so your machine can sew through the layers much easier!

      @TomKatStitchery Whitney, thank you for quick and complete reply! It's always amazing that you squeeze so much into each day...even when you might not feel great. Ginny helps, of course, and is much appreciated for her tech skills and now sewing skills, too!

    You make this look so easy. It makes me think I may even be able to make them. I love that you showed all the steps including finishing the seams.

    Whitney, this was one of the BEST SEW-ALONGs I have ever watched! Love the Cashmerette Vinson and can’t wait to stitch a pair up (maybe this week???) for myself! You are a wonderful teacher and I appreciate your skills so much! Bravo! ❤

    I really liked the contrasting top stitching. Great video for those in the club who are able to purchase the pattern! I don't remember ever seeing facings at the hem of pants.

    Hi Whitney! Way to go on this one. I think this is your best one yet. Nicely paced, well demonstrated. The only suggestion I might make is a fabric with a distinct “wrong” side. The maroon was a little too dark on camera I think. Your favorite orange or bright green would show up well. Haven’t downloaded the pattern yet, but I’ll do that soon. I’m still not sure about the balloon style on me, but willing to try it again.

      I'm so glad you enjoyed this! I will definitely take the color into consideration more for the next sew along! As far as the balloon leg, wait until Tuesday. I'm showing the versions on my body and I think you'll be convinced!

    I was hoping you would show me how to shrink the interfacing. PP in medium says you need to shrink the interfacing if you wash the garment.
    Great sew along, like the zipper install method. ❤

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  7 днів тому +1

      I usually just use my iron to take any shrinkage out. I press my pieces starting in the middle and working my way to the edges. Hovering the iron over the interfacing with steam will take out any shrink.

    • @cheryl3366
      @cheryl3366 7 днів тому

      Thanks, I wonder how much the interfacing would shrink. It's only the tailor and mid weight that need shrinkage.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  7 днів тому +1

      @@cheryl3366 It's not much at all. I rarely have a noticeable amount of shrinkage and have laundered (and machine dried) both pairs of Vintons that I've made and the interfacing has been fine in both.

    Amazing sew-a-long/tutorial! What kind of rise do these pants have? I have a fuller tummy and prefer a high rise type pant.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  7 днів тому

      These come to my natural waist. Even though I'm short, my rise is a regular length. I also have a fuller tummy/waist, which is why I love a faced waistband. These are very comfortable!

    What great pants. Great job with the sew a long. I printed out the pattern today and can't wait to make my first pair. Question, why do you keep the premade zipper stop end, and cut at the top vs. using the premade zipper top and cutting the end? I've always done my nylon zippers by cutting off the bottom and sewing over the end to create a new stop. Is there a reason it's better to cut off the top? Or just a different way?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  5 днів тому

      You could totally do it either way. I prefer keeping the original stop because adding the waistband (or facing) creates its own stop. It's just one less thing I have to do.

    need help. It is my first time with a fly front and it looks great until I removed the basting stitches on the fly. My zipper is right at the fly edge. what did I do wrong.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 дні тому

      When you sewed the zipper in (the first pass), you lay the zipper face down on the pressed open fly. You should line up the left edge of the zipper tape to the seam with the rest of the zipper falling on the right side of the fly. You then sew the zipper to the right side of the fly next to the teeth on the right side of the zipper. This should offset the zipper so that the teeth aren't at the fly edge. Does that make sense?
