8.41 His grandfather's Dutch quote " a brutal man has half the world " is telling. He thinks its inspiring!
The rest of that quote is the insolent( arrogant, disrespectful) contemptuous) have the other half. Its from 16th century Dutch colonialism.
On this journey that he has been both brutal and arrogant in his (ab)use of horses as mere vehicles in his selfish stupid quest to be noticed.

The Dutch word "brutaal" actually translates more accurately to "cheeky" rather than "brutal" in this sentence, but I still agree it fits his arrogant behavior. This man should be stopped before he kills the poor horses. The word "brutal" does seem more fitting with the damage he is causing.

@@DeNurti It can be translated in many ways, but the way that the word 'brutaal' is meant in the quote is more like rude. Taking more than in fair because they can get away with it.

    Those poor horses.
If only Cyril had an ounce of empathy, or even common sense, he could have been man enough to admit his mistakes, call this a major learning experience, and accepted that the start of his epic life changing journey was not the epic journey itself, but the start of his several years of planning and preparation that led up to the epic journey.
Then he could film himself over the next several years, training and preparing, in addition to filming the epic journey itself.
Which would have provided much more material for the documentary he wanted to sell.
He could have recorded his own and his horses improving fitness and skills, he could have filmed all the shorter practice journeys.
This would have made a heartwarming, inspiring and educational story. Not to mention building up a much larger audience.

He's trying to sound all deep and philosophical, but it's not genuine. He is just stringing together pretty words that he thinks are profound, but in reality, it's just a bunch of cliches that he derived from other people's experiences. It sounds like the voiceover commentary for a Netflix feature, because that's exactly his goal - he is playing a character to gain fame and attention. He did not learn lessons. He does not love and respect his equine partners. He does not have passionate adoration for nature and the land he is traveling through. He is not willing to have confrontation with himself, and adjust his ego accordingly. He is a spoiled, narcissistic perpetual teen boy who thinks he is on some soulful journey. But the thing about such experiences : you can't go looking for them, you can't decide to have them, you can't choose what circumstances contain them. He is grandiose enough to think that he is special. Thousands of people do through-hikes every year all over the world. He chose a start and end date to his "rite of passage", and already had a story and plot in mind for himself, rather than allowing the journey and vast uncertainty and mistakes to humble him. If he gets any sort of significant media coverage or a documentary deal.... I want to leave the planet.

Self centered one track mind. The goal whoever or whatever suffers. Unreal. To experience a real life changing experience you go somewhere and let fate guide you. You don't set a goal. You face the challenges put in front of you. You take the time to soak in the good and overcome the bad. Maybe he should have spoken to a Native American about taking a Journey to manhood. They protect and care for their horses because they are the difference between life and Death on a Quest. They are a companion. They are fully conditioned to handle the journey. They aren't over burdened and set to a time limit.

Being "toed out" in the back and the weight bearing significantly more to the inside than the outside I have seen before, but it was not a good situation. It was a rescue mare that I thought might go down for the first 48 hours that was at least 15% + underweight and needed 150bs put on a what should be a 950 lb horse who looked like she was physically 3 yrs old, but her teeth said 6 yrs old (vets words). Needed to be on a refeeding program and the back legs were so weak and under muscled that after 45 days of refeeding and walking and a bit of trotting it wasn't that she didn't want me to pick up her back feet, it truly was that she could not balance long enough for me to pick them and her leg bearing the weight would give out and she would be clear with her body language "I can't hold it up anymore" and of course I put her foot down. The weight bearing was easy to see not just because of the pointed out toes, but because once she was eating and growing her hoof wore in a way where the inside of the hoof wore down and the outside edge flared out and the wear was incredibly unbalanced. Took 8 mo of quality feed, regular exercise moving from lunging on flats at walk/trot to mild hills to build muscle, and a farrier every 6 weeks to ensure the hooves were staying balanced and she was not able to wear it so unevenly as we built up her muscle and body correctly.
I also want to say that we are seeing the outside of the horse. With rescues like the one I mentioned the first several months I felt like I needed to switch feeds, I checked my hay, I felt like I was doing something wrong, but my other horse rescue friends advised me this was just worse than the others and to stay the course and how all of the internal organs were using up the vitamin and mineral supplement and 70/30 hay before I would see anything outside the body, like putting on weight, hoof growth, wound repair (mild and not deep), improved coat, etc. and it took months but they were right. There is damage we can't see going on as the horses organs and body need certain vitamins and minerals with healthy forage, which is why we farm alfalfa, timothy, and grasses and bale them. We even send hay to be tested for nutrition. Ditch grass is simply not quality forage.
