I find it fascinating that Abigail is dancing “Swan lake” and specifically the part where Odile is in disguise as Odette. I love how she reveals her true face/identity with the ballet move. ❤️
I could be wrong, but I think Lazar being Dracula is implicitly confirmed by the simple fact that "Abigail" is actually a loose retelling of "Dracula's Daughter," a lesser-known sequel to the original 1931 film. If anything, I think the only reason they don't explicitly call Lazar "Dracula" is because Dracula has already appeared (by name) in multiple films in just the past 2 years.
@@JehBasquiat Do they ever use the term Dracula in that movie? I know it's part of the story of Dracula, but that'd be dumb if they stopped someone else from using a name they never used.
I’ll say what I said in the last one: The statue and painting are a reference to the Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck. The “woman” in the painting and statue is a man in medieval garb. It’s her vampire father. I assume it’s to give us a timeline, to know she was turned in the 15th century.

I thought the same thing until the one guy mentioned him and Frank killing her dad. Honestly, her dad being real is cool and he’s actually pretty intimidating, but it would’ve been really interesting and funny to think that a whole crime family was being secretly lead by a two hundred year old child.
This was a surprisingly really good Vampire movie. I had low expectations but the cast all did really solid jobs and I was SHOCKED when I saw Giancarlo Esposito and as a vampire! Solid 7.5/10!
The big hat is a reference to the Arnolfini Portrait from 1434 by Van Eyck. It's believed to be part of the fashion of that period of Belgium and a very famous painting for various techniques. I saw it in the movie as a reference to them being from that time period or older, with them keeping that fashion around.

Best bit of dialogue in the film. "How do we kill a vampire?" "Which kind?" All that, tells me vimpire mythology and entertainment exist in this world. So Abigail and her "Father" are either one kind of several types of vampires or the progenitor of all vampires.
I mean, pretty much every culture on earth regardless of era has vampire myths that were created separately from each other, so it's not really surprising that in the world of the movie they has them. And it's a valid question to ask "what kind?" when talking about them because there are so many different vampire types described in myths and they all have different strengths, weakness and powers. Some are way more supernatural than others and some have more weaknesses than others. I do find it interesting that she has a living human heartbeat and is effected by drugs. You don't see that kind of thing usually with vampire stories.
@magickmynd1296 Not to mention the time when those Myths were made, drugs (modern drugs at least) weren't exactly a readily available option for them to try as a way to restrain vampires. I think Lazar is every vampire, having adapted into new personalities over time, like Dracula (the dragon). But maybe he is, according to his current name, Lazarus?
Dracula doesn't actually translate to dragon, it translates to devil 😂 you may look it up, what "drac" means in romanian. Vlad was called Vlad Dracul aka Vlad The Devil😁 but you're not entirely wrong because there were dragons in the area where Vlad came from, they're called dacian wolves and they were some kind of mix of wolf and snakes that an ancient civilization of dacians used in battles, to scare off their enemies or as a good luck charm, idk😊 but it doesn't make a lot sense to me why he got an extra nickname of dragon though, I don't think he ever had any interactions with a dragon

He went by the name Vlad son of the dragon but to his enemies especially after turning vampire he went by Vlad son of the devil so therefore add it all up and you got undeniable proof it's Vlad tepes aka Dracula and he turned Abigail as his daughter for eternity
'Dracula's Daughter' (1936) was a direct sequel to Universal's 'Dracula,' the one which made use of the Swan Lake theme. The crest on the metal gate is also very, very similar to the crest on the ring worn by Bela Lugosi, and several other actors since (in this case, the 'dragon' forms the stylised 'D', surrounded by 4 crowns). On a probably related note, the name 'Abigail' means 'my father's joy'.
Does that mean that Lazar, already a Vampire, could sire a mortal daughter, or a 'Dhampir', and Turn her into a [full] Vampire in her pre-teens (like Det. Rita Veder, in Wes Craven's "Vampire in Brooklyn")?
As you pointed out, via the Order of the Dragon, there can be more than one person that can go by the name "Dracula". And, we do know that "Vlad the Impaler" had a number or children, as well as numerous siblings. Thus, Abagail's father could be any number of men known as Dracula.

I don’t think it took Sammy a full 24 hours to become a vampire I think she was a vampire the moment she was bitten it just took Abigail to take control of her to make the transformation happen or speed it up in a way more like a Abigail was waiting for the perfect moment to play with her new toy 😂and fool the group into thinking sammy was no longer a threat so that’s my theory on it
Don't get me wrong, this ending was still really good. But seeing just how strong Frank was after being recently turned, i would've loved to see what Lazar would've done to Frank in a fight being as old as he is.
abigail said it takes awhile to do all the cool stuff, and lazzar could seemingly read the mind of abigail and understand why she was so upset with him. he literally stared at her forehead and then made the judgement. i think he has additional powers since he was a vampire for the longest period of time
He’ll basically turn Frank into mincemeat and don’t forget too is that Frank is bigger and stronger than both of them due to his size and that he doesn’t hold back very cruel and dangerous, also that he’s feed on Abigail and bite Joey so he had a bit of a power up cause of the blood he drank form Abigail as well
So a vamp has a "heart beat" which implies it's alive (vs being undead)... then decapitation, or major dismemberment prob would slow it down quite a bit.
@@grobanite4ever85 You can tell Abigail then... since she's the one with the heartbeat (per the video narrative). Given she has a heart beat (thus alive), and at least 200+ hundred years old and has supernatural abilities... this could only lead me to think they are another race or species from another dimension where earth physics don't apply, or aliens which uses human bodies as hosts (such as a parasite?) with advanced technology which makes it look like they are supernatural beings to low-tech humans.
@@randallbesch2424 Let's see... flying... being able to turn someone into a vampire if they drink your blood... being shot in the face and instantly healing with the bullet still inside them... drinking blood and instantly getting a level up... exploding meat sack like a water balloon when staked in the heart... these are beyond superhuman abilities, but supernatural events.
I absolutely adored Abigail. It did the impossible and topped Scott Pilgrim as my new favorite movie. I'm not at all exaggerating when I say I believe Alisha Weir deserves an Oscar nomination for her performance. It'll never happen since the Academy has a ridiculous bias against horror but seriously, Weir deserves so much goddamn praise for this movie. She was at most 14 while filming! That blows me away every time I think about it.
FACT CHECK: Vlad the Impaler has nothing to do with Stoker's Count, save the name ("dracul = devil," a = "son of"). The Count was originally coined "Count Wampyr." As for the "Turk" references, Stoker cobbled together histories from Nordic, Slavic, European, and around a dozen other tangible mythos. It'd be rude to list them all, but the Ugrics are an excellent place to start (see "the Northman"). To the point, Lazar is Dracula. Universal spilled the cat a while back in calling it a "Dracula's Daughter reimagination." then assumed folks forgot and released the secret trailer. Lovely film. Thanks for the channel.
I absolutely loved this movie! My one complaint is the fact that trailers fully let you know that Abigail is the vampire. I wish that detail had been left a surprise.
37:00 i think the scriech your hearing here is the squeek from her trying to move on the blood covered marbled floor. leading you to think she cant really run or get away from him in fear as he got close to her. maybe idk
The music that played throughout the movie sounded so similar to the music in Predator. Which has some similarities to this film. Great video as always
This was a great recap. Thank you so much. My fave vampire movie since the Fearless Vampire Killers- (Dance of the Vampires). I understand that the movie from 1967 is by Roman Polanski. I understand how complicated this is. But the film is both a shiver and a hilarity. So please don't come for me in the comments. Thank you.
I wonder since Abigail is also lonely and the same age body wise as Joey son Caleb will she ever try and turn him into a vampire for like a companion or Joey also.
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I how they make a second...Lazar wants a mom for abigail so he hunts Joey...abigail teams up to save her, they kill Lazar, but Joey becomes a vampire anyways 🤷🏾♂️
I think this is more or less how vampires should be depicted during a horror movie..... like focusing on them 100 percemt of the time takes away from the horror but if u focus of the normal people trying to survive while at the same time focusing on the vamps for it to seem like a legit vampire horror. Even their eyes were done great..... they were colored but not over the tipe cgi or unrealistic looking.... just a dulled down color of a non normal color... practical with anything is usually better
the things flying out of the house are demons and/or dragons. i think there used to be a ton of vampires and then as the years passed they either died or transformed. i truly have a love/hate feel for these types of movies cause they have the coolest lore and then they don't get the chance to explore it further because it is a one off.
I'd love to see some sort of series about a criminal underworld with vampires, but more following a human character working for/alongside vampires. Like, there's plenty of media out there with humans vs vampires or vampires already in charge and humans are hunted to be made cattle, but it would be interesting to see humans work alongside vampires with only a background threat of the human being killed by the vampire.
There was a short-lived show called Moonlight that sort of did that. It had a secret vampire private investigator as the male lead. It broke my little child heart when the show got canceled.
The vampires that regrow their limbs reminds me of the ones in blade and dusk till dawn other ones usually reattach their limbs like twilight or the tv show van Helsing
I never did see the original of this movie; I'd love to hear/watch a video on a contrast and comparison of the 1936 Dracula's Daughter and this Abigail.
It could be like a few others where Dracula was just one of his many identities throught out the ages. Blade 3, He Never Died and Dracula 2000 all did this type of story off the tip of my head though I know ther are others.
Maybe lazar is Lazarus. Maybe that’s how this movie is adding to the Dracula lore. That he’s much older than the original Vlad origin and that he’s actually the original Lazarus. Dracula 2000 tried to do this with Judas. I think the Lazarus take is interesting.
Lazar is definitely Dracula. (It's an alias, most likely mocking God/ a reference to the Lazarus pit. Giving "life" to a human so they can turn and have immortality.) Also Abigail is Dracula's daughter.
Have you done the tv series continuation for Legion ? It was really good so naturally canceled right as it was building up to a reveal and boss battle that was looking to be genuinely awesome.
Why did her father turned her, is my question and since Abigail was human before the turn, I wonder if her mom was too. Taking a guess her mom was the hat lady.
That crest on the gate actually has most of the symbols associated with Vald Tepes and his family (the moon and star/sun and four crowns, then also the dragon symbol). Producers have stated this is a take on "Dracula's Daughter" so all the Dracula references confirm that yeah he's supposed to be Drac. The person in the painting and the statue is Dracula, that is how some of the nobels dressed back when he would have turned her, males would dress like that, as I noticed earlier in the video when referring to the painting they said "woman" and then at the end stated that maybe it was her mother. That wasn't a woman in the statue or painting that is the robes male nobility wore then and this is depictions of Abigail and Lazar together. That is echoed in the way he stands next to her and slightly behind woen Joey is leaving, the same way the statues pose is.

Oh that series is my new favorite, love that the actor who played Luke cage is in that series
@daianspahava8279 Same! And Evil just ended season 5 isn't coming for a goood while and possibly on a different platform so it can be reviewed seeing how 4 seasons is more than enough time lore and the general feed back for the series is amazing!
The painting has dragons flying over the mansion, obviously😅
Sort of not your regular thing but within the elder Scrolls their is a huge amount of lore Ans different types of vampires and werewolfs I would love for you to do an in depth video on that
MATTHEW GOODE is fucking phenomenal as a vampire.... I'm very biased because I loved him in A Discovery of Witches
Did...did I watch a different video essay about Abigail? I could've *sworn* I watched this already
Getting covered in blood due to Spontaneous Vampire Combustion might be my new favorite genre, wait what
I seen that in true blood
Also, Innocent Blood (1992) sometime? :D
It's bad, but it's SO good.
One day Giancarlo will play a good guy
I hope that day never comes 😂😂😂😎
I don’t think it took Sammy a full 24 hours to become a vampire I think she was a vampire the moment she was bitten it just took Abigail to take control of her to make the transformation happen or speed it up in a way more like a Abigail was waiting for the perfect moment to play with her new toy 😂and fool the group into thinking sammy was no longer a threat so that’s my theory on it
I love how all the crew is named after a member of the rat pack
Not to mention that they are a pack of rats
Love that Danzig song. Everyone should look up his stuff and his other bands Misfits and Samhain. Perfect for this time of year.
Then he or she won't be a full blooded vamp. He or she would be a Dhampir or day walker
@@fialee8 Superhuman abilities not supernatural.
@@randallbesch2424 and superhuman is supernatural, because they are SUPER natural
Pay not attention to the bathory family crest on the locked door midway into the film.
"No over the top effects."
What the hell is the explosive corpses called then. Lol
Another great video please cover the vampires from a discovery of witches TV show/books
YAY!!! wait, where did the old one go?i would have sworn you covered this? damn. anyway great show
He did….I had it open in one of my tabs and after a day or so it was gone.
I was just wondering if I have imagined it... Thank you for the confirmation
I loved this movie. I think we need more films that are self-contained stories these days, it keeps my theater alive despite multiverse fatigue.
You should make a video on the Brendan Fraser Mummy films
Thank you.
So much better than i had thought it might be.
Could you do a video on the game Vampyr it doesn't get mentioned much but I think it deserves some recognition
Kevin Durand stole just about every scene he was in.
Sammy bringing back onions instead of garlic took me out 🤣
So this is a horror twist on "The Usual Suspects".
The only ones who split up is Scoby Doo and the Gang, LOL
I saw this movie twice in the theater, and absolutely loved it both times. I just got it on DVD/Blue ray combo.
Small dragons in the painting
29:32 the first chick Jerry bites in the remake of "Fright Night" I believe explodes when she's rescued from his house, right?
Not in the original it doesn't.
@@randallbesch2424 the operative word in my comment was "remake". U probably missed that. 🙃
Never heard of this flick but now i really want to see it.
Matthew Claremont appears to be haveing some fun. 😂
Personally, I like it when vampires make shrieking and roaring noises. I find it very badass.
Kind of like from dust til dawn at end of the movie all the vampires explode from sunlight
The vampires that regrow their limbs reminds me of the ones in blade and dusk till dawn other ones usually reattach their limbs like twilight or the tv show van Helsing
Discovery of witches
Cover its amazing show
Also that the father specifically uses the word “countless” could be a bit of a on the nose reference that he is Count Dracula
I never did see the original of this movie; I'd love to hear/watch a video on a contrast and comparison of the 1936 Dracula's Daughter and this Abigail.
Them exploring the mansion was so RE1Remake vibes!!!!
Dracula: Dead and Loving It just because it's campy and fun.
Also love your videos. 🎉❤
We never learned what Dean did to scorn Abigail
I'm wondering that too😮 it could be literally nothing, it could be he had to be killed for no loses ends, yeah know.
I really enjoyed that movie.
Cool explanation but as many others pointed out, there is no mother or female figure in the paintings. It is a man with a medieval hat.
Ain’t never been this early for a vid! Idk Peter was my favorite character.
Giving "life" to a human so they can turn and have immortality.)
Also Abigail is Dracula's daughter.
Have you done the tv series continuation for Legion ?
It was really good so naturally canceled right as it was building up to a reveal and boss battle that was looking to be genuinely awesome.
Welp, gotta watch this now, thanks!
It's on Peacock now
Why did her father turned her, is my question and since Abigail was human before the turn, I wonder if her mom was too.
