    • @jra7690
      @jra7690 7 років тому +113

      Merging at 35mph??? What are you insane???? Slow down dude, you need to wait until you've been on the interstate for at least 10 seconds before you get to those speeds. That way when you pull in front of the other drivers on the interstae it forces them to slow down, because slow is safe.
      Also that "acceleration lane" is used for extra texting time, getting something from the backseat, getting your food ready to eat. All the really important things that you need to be doing while driving.

      or you can try what some guy did to me today, join right on at 40 and pull straight into the middle lane in a tiny gap with cars doing 70. That way you know if they are good motorway companions if they are able to swerve out the way and miss you

    Another super neat trick in the car is to use your finger to flick the little level to the right of the steering wheel. If you flick it up, it tells the drive behind you you're going left. If you flick it down, you'll be going right. Such a nice little technique that SO MANY don't seem to know how to do! Bonus points- if you do this to change lanes into my lane, you'll be my new best friend!

    Never drive 10/10 on a road you've not been on before.
    Seems almost dumb to say that, but I've been surprised by the folks who brag about almost losing it, etc., because they had no idea what was around the next bend. Some say it's adventurous to do that- a sure adrenaline challenge. Then you fly around a curve and there's 30 folks on bicycles... good luck with that attitude....

    • @alekos911

      exactly Richard! Rick, knowing the road does not mean you know what is on it or around it at a specific moment. I have found myself in dangerous positions on roads I am acquainted with simply because another driver was overtaking in a blind corner and therefore coming straight at me! Always keep a margin of error (your error or somebody elses, especially in curvy mountain roads with massive ravines)

    I think that patience is the most important one. You eliminate unnecessary risks mostly and save a lot of fuel. I mean I used to drive a bit faster around the town and was impatient, changing lanes all the time etc. When I had low tank one day I didn't switched to the sport manual and kept it on drive and engaged eco mode. When I get the habit of it I only lost about 2 minutes each day but saved hella lot of fuel.

      Heel toeing doesn't fuck your clutch. It does the opposite, when your foots on the brake and you need to change down its just rev match, which will prolong the life of the clutch. Might be abit jerks at first and tbh you don't need to do it too often if you are out and about on public roads if you think far enough ahead but sometimes you end up on the brakes and needing downshift and it just helps to to be a more smooth change.

    If I didn't already know these things before, I certainly learned them when training for my CDL. Parallel parking a dump truck was the game changer for me, as was being able to look clear over the other traffic (almost like a Spidey-sense that lets you see potential trouble coming) and having to leave braking distances because my truck has 25000 GVWR and won't exactly stop on a dime.

  • @kyalami_green_rs3
    @kyalami_green_rs3 7 років тому +88

    You don't need to stay with your left foot constantly on the clutch. You can put it on the very left side and whenever you need to shift you can put your foot back onto the clutch but only for the shifting sequence. That's quite more relaxing to your foot and you won't press accidentally your clutch because of exhaustion of your foot muscles.
    I hope I expressed myself in adequate English..

    • @CharlieFoxtrot06
      @CharlieFoxtrot06 7 років тому +1

      Right hand drive cars don't usually have a dead pedal, since directly to the left of the clutch is the centre stack of the dashboard. I presume there's space there in an automatic, but why would you want an automatic?

      It shouldn't be. When you hit the brake pedal it will sink down to the level of the gas pedal, allowing you to roll or slide your heel over smoothly.

    • @Arekp2ws
      @Arekp2ws 7 років тому +7

      Some cars alow you to heel and toe even when you go easy on the brakes and in some cars you have to go hard on the brakes to heel and toe but you can just rev match instead. In my opinion rev matching or heel and toe is helpful only on track or when you are pushing your car to the limit. Being in the gear when driving a FWD makes your car more stable but in a RWD when you are approaching the intersection and the road is wet it's better just to be in the neutral when slowing down. And from my observations rev matching all the time does not decrease fuel consumpion when driving in the city. I used to rev match all the time but now I do it only when I'm revving my car very high and when I'm in hurry.

    • @ant0n0vich
      @ant0n0vich 7 років тому +2

      Similar issue for me. I can't heel and toe in my car ( Subaru BRZ 6 speed manual), but can do it just fine in my truck (International ProStar 10 speed manual), all because the pedals are spaced out. The pedals in my car seem too close for heel and toe and every time I try rolling my foot, I end up applying too much brake or not enough gas.

    Now, heel-toe downshifting is a bit tricky when your acelerator pedal is kindda further away. So your pedals pretty much force you to put your toe on the accelerator and heel on the brake, which is unpractical.
    Cars are often designed to not let you touch the throttle and brake, because most drivers won't master this skill anyway.

    • @NyckLP
      @NyckLP 7 років тому +2

      I have this problem... to even reach for the accelerator my brake pedal has to be fully down, and braking super hard. Its not suitable if your pedals are kinda far away from each other

    • @sasjadevries
      @sasjadevries 7 років тому +1

      NyckLP
      Yeah, exactly what I meant, in my case it's simply because the accelerator is offset backwards a bit too much. And the accelerator pedal hinges the other way around. (hinge is on the bottom, so you have to push on the top side)
      You could solve it by braking with your heel and pressing the throttle with your toe, that will actually solve the problem, but it creates another one: how the heck can you comfortable brake with your heel?

      I've never even heard of that before! It's weird to think that car manufacturers would purposefully design the footwell to prevent that. I guess I've been spoiled by my 850, the ergonomics of that cockpit are so well-suited to aggressive driving.

      A Volvo 850 is still a practical family vehicle with excellent crash safety, plenty of cargo room (with the 855), and decent mileage, but also has some serious performance as well. The stock N/A comes with 170bhp and 165 ft/lbs, and the GLT turbo has 200bhp with 200ft/lbs. The rear suspension has passive 4-wheel-steering. They can be had for less than 2k as well (in the states, even less elsewhere). I would suggest looking into one of those.

If you're 10 years old, ask your father to buy you a $500 lemon with manual tranny to practice and wrench on before you turn 18, and by that time you'll pass all tests with flying colours. Japanese cars usually have enough seat adjustment to accomodate an average 10-year old westerner.

    Stop the car on the uphill, Try getting a smooth clutch accelerator combo to move the car forward

    The driving a manual part is spot on. It took me 16 years of driving before I ever bought an auto and I miss shifting. I had so much more control when driving my old Golf, S10, C10, Luv, Ranger, Civic and Mustang. I knew exactly how fast I was going at all times based off of which gear I was in coupled with the exhaust sound. With my new auto truck I look down after a few seconds of spacing out and say "WTF! How am I going 15 over?!" Not to mention the ability to down shift for hills. I feel so lazy and out of touch with my new truck sometimes. If my truck had a factory manual option, I would have got it.

    Heel toe on the road I am a bit unsure about. I prefer to seperate my phases according to roadcraft (e.g. no braking while changing gear). Instead I rev-match (Clutch in-touch of throttle-clutch out). With this method you are less likely to slip off the pedals (Could be just me though I´ve got quite narrow feet). Also if you do mess up a down shift you will upset the car, with heel toe this happens at the worst possible moment-the turn in, resulting in a spin.

      I do the same. I've seen people heel-toe by keeping their foot half over the brake and half over the throttle. The movement is much easier that way, but it still takes some practice

  • @pcfreak1992
    @pcfreak1992 7 років тому +25

    I'm sorry, but as much as using track techniques sounds fun, you don't need to do "heel-toe downshifting". Using a foot on two pedals is also rather dangerous and there is no need to take that risk. Either downshift to a lower gear earlier and let the car decelerate by itself with maybe a little bit of braking or push the clutch and brake until you can safely accelerate again, where you then select the proper gear and match the revs. It has the same end result and safes you from taking any risks by pushing two pedals with one foot. The only time when you need that technique is when you are racing where every split-second counts and you don't want to waste a second to match the revs after braking hard.

    • @DiveTheseClips
      @DiveTheseClips 7 років тому +14

      Heel-toe downshifting probably is indeed a little bit too much for everyday driving. Instead, they should have mentioned simple rev-matching when downshifting, a technique that not many people are aware of.

    • @pcfreak1992
      @pcfreak1992 7 років тому

      That's what I was thinking of. When I started driving it was quite difficult and I was only about done learning how to match shifting up. But after a while I realized that it not only saves the clutch but also makes for a much smoother driving, when you know how to rev-match when shifting down.

    • @krizex
      @krizex 7 років тому +5

      Actually heel-toe downshifting is also important for emergency stopping, i.e. accident ahead of you, someone hops on the brakes and gives you little time to react. When doing heel-toe downshifting you can combine the brakes with engine breaking and will stop much quicker compared to just pressing the brake pedal and hoping for the best. :) On the other hand If you do engine breaking without heel-toe to rev match you will fuck up your transmission and clutch. So yes, while not necessary for everyday 'casual' driving, it is definitely very useful to know how to do, it has saved my ass a few times already.

    • @DiveTheseClips
      @DiveTheseClips 7 років тому +9

      Kris Tonev i don't see how using engine braking in an emergency can make the situation any safer. If your braking system is not broken, it must be capable of locking all wheels completely. When your wheels are stopped there's no point in applying additional braking force from the engine, the car is already slowing down as quick as it's possible with the current tires.
      If your car has ABS it's even more dangerous, because if you accidently apply to much engine braking, you can lock front/rear wheels (for FWD/RWD cars) while the opposite pair of wheels would keep spinning, because abs is preventing them from locking. With such imbalance of braking force the car can easily spin out.
      So i would say, in case of an emergency just press the brakes, and also press the clutch so that any remaining torque from the engine would not be able to distort the braking forces acting on wheels.

    • @pcfreak1992
      @pcfreak1992 7 років тому +7

      +Kris Tonev Did you ever do an emergency stop? When you push the brakes so hard that the ABS kicks in, I bet you can't slide your foot over to the gas pedal without loosening up on the brake pedal. Even if you could, apart from taking an unnecessary risk, your car will not slow down faster with engine braking, since the ABS already keeps the brakes at the physical limit of what the tires can transfer.
      In normal situations, if you let go off the gas, the car will slow down so slowly compared to a full slam on the brakes, that its added deceleration wouldn't make a difference that is worth taking that risk for, anyways. Also deceleration with the brakes is so quick that you are spending most of your time switching gears and the engine isn't even braking.
      +Dive These Clips Thanks for your comment, you beat me to it ;-)

    When noticing traffic stopping ahead of you while driving on a high speed road. I find it good practice to blink my emergency flashers a couple times if I need to dump speed quickly. Most modern cars automatically turn the flashers on, but only if the braking is happening hard enough.
    This signals the car behind you to be more cautious and you won't end up having your rear destroyed and living with brain damage.

    Heres a tip, a big mistake a lot of drivers make when merging with traffic is, YES you do speed up, but if theres a car infront of you and they are also merging leave space so you can speed up, not follow behind him and let that person dictate your speed that you can merge at, I mean slow down before the merging lane/ramp and give them a few car lengths this will make sure you get up to speed while leaving a lot more space for yourself and cars already in that lane letting you in, this will free up congestion on roads and make everyone drive faster, by driving "slower".

    Here are some more tips that have probably saved me from dozens of possible accidents:
    1. Signal early when merging or switching lanes. If another driver sees that you want to move over, there is a chance they will let you in. That chance is zero if they have no idea or only know at the last second.
    2. Know what lane you have to be in and get over there early. There’s no need for last second lane switches and trying to force yourself between other cars.
    3. You can go as far as you want over the speed limit as long as you aren’t the fastest car on the road.
    4. When approaching a merge on the highway, move over into the far lane and allow the mergers to do what they have to do.
    5. If someone slams on the brakes in front of you and you don’t think you’ll be able to stop in time, swerve over onto the shoulder if you are able to.

      BMW drivers are great at signalling, they do it soo much they always run out of blinker fluid so theres never any left to indicate with.

    There are some highway merges here in Sonoma County that you need to stomp on the gas to merge with speeds below the highway speed (but still accelerating to 65 mph). One merge even has the label "Short Merge" on it.

    Also , don't keep your hand on the gear shift in a manual transmission car. It's not meant to have pressure on it all the time and will accelerate wear on the shifting mechanism.

    dont drive fast in the city
    if you go 60 and i go 45 kph we will most likely be together again at the next traffic light
    and if you feel the need to launch too fast with your daddys 5er bmw you are probably too stupid to control it in an emergency situation

    A comment about heel-toe downshifting: it's super super tricky with regular road car brakes (because road brakes are "soft" and travels a lot of more), and while I know how to actually perform the maneuver, I haven't figured out a right way of doing it in '04 Civic. Instead, when turning a corner, I put the car into 2nd and stayed on the clutch until I've got the throttle up at the right RPM range before letting go my left foot.
    And I agree, easing on the brakes makes your drive much smoother in general, and coasting in gear really helps you slow down

    I wish I were told this earlier when I was getting my license: slower is not safer. If you go slower while merging, other cars approach you faster. Speeding up means you're approaching their speed, meaning you travel more quickly, but also more safely.

    I think a lot of people get scared by on ramps because the road is narrower and there is a curve. My mother does that where she sees a corner, gets timid, and does not accelerate at all. Its not good because even our ancient Dodge minivan has enough grip to handle any on ramp, even here in America. Maybe people just don't understand the machines they are licensed to control? Seems that way sometimes.

      I had some fucking idiots come to a complete stop on a narrow slip road leading on to the motorway the other day I nearly ran in the back of the idiots since its pretty much the last thing you expect someone on a slip road to do. I had to rev the nuts off my engine to get on safely since my car is sluggish.
