Deadly quack water tester. (scam)

- A rather dangerous device used to fake water testing by unscrupulous door to door scammers pushing water filter systems. It simply rectifies the mains and passes DC current through water, causing rapid electrolysis that discolours the water strongly.
I'm guessing that the unit is demonstrated with distilled water in one glass masquerading as "filtered water". The unit has a single pole switch (on the neutral core of the flex) so that the metal rods will be live at rectified mains voltage even when switched off on the unit depending on how the plug is wired (polarised plug) or inserted (two pin plug). This unit is only safe to touch if fully unplugged.
In use the rods have full mains voltage between them, which could cause electrocution or burns if touched. Excellent.
If you know someone with one of these devices, then make sure they know that it is a serious electric shock hazard.
I don't recommend buying one of these, but if you feel the urge then the eBay keyword is "electrolyzer".
If you enjoy the videos on this channel you can help support it with a dollar for coffee, cookies and dodgy electronic devices at / bigclive
I can't hear the words FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER without thinking of Mehdi
At least it has a fuse, so you don't damage the device when you get electrocuted to death.
Not exactly a scam, but I have to say that there could have been a better switch on the device so that you can't get electrocuted by the contacts if the switch was off...
i saw this thing on facebook, a guy was "demonstrating" how bad tap water was saying you should drink distilled water, but really he was just demonstrating the low conductivity of distilled water
Problem is, you didn’t explain WHY it’s quackery.
Finally something that, when put in water, is more dangerous than a hairdryer.
You're like the Ashens of electronic devices.
Okay, but is it safe to use Deer Park water in an ultrasonic humidifier, or will a brain-eating amoeba go up my nose? What is this demonstrating?
I still can't believe people don't understand how this works, I mean it's covered in GCSE Core Science. /:
If the water doesn't kill ya, that 'water tester' sure will.
The reason that one electrode has to be aluminum is that this device creates an oxidation-reduction reaction, sort of like a battery running in reverse.
'10 amps... That should do it for heavly contaminated water!' lol
A device specifically designed to kill scam artists... I wonder if the designer got scammed with a water filter themselves and came up with tihs product as revenge :-)
I took electronics in high school and my teacher didn't make it very easy to understand everything. I've always wanted to learn more and get back into electronics, and your channel has been such a great help to me. Thanks from across the pond.
Okay, so digging back into my corrosion course I think I know why they used two different metals. The device involves galvanic corrosion because it has two different metals in a medium with charge carriers (dissolved stuff like salts, etc..) In galvanic corrosion, one metal remains intact at the expense of the other and it will happen on its own over time which is why you want to be careful about building things with different metals in contact if they'll be in a wet environment. You can also apply electric current in one polarity to speed it up, or you can apply the opposite polarity to impede the corrosion (or reverse it, which is why you'd normally use something that can't corrode as the other electrode in such a case).
Chinese, open mains voltage and made to scam people. If it was pink it would be the perfect product for this channel :D
my father actually believed in salesman that use those tester. i had a feeling at that time this is a fake test, and i was right
i love how there are channels out there thinking that distilled water is the best thing in the world bc they have seen experiments with these "water testers", normal water is healthier anyway due to the minerals that your body needs
JPT. started watching your vids and have to say, i'm mesmerised by your knowledge. excellent deconstruction of the items you test. keep up the good work for us with less limited knowledge. top marks :)
