One of the all time great Derby winners...not mentioned often enough these days... a son of Nijinsky by a Vaguely Noble dam (say no more)...unbeaten......but a tragically short career ... he would surely have been one of the best ever!.....as PE says 'the best horse I ever sat on'.. high praise indeed..
Highly reminiscent of his outstanding father's triumph in 1970: the same stride and blistering acceleration to take him away from the opposition. Golden Fleece taking the lead earlier is the only major difference.
In the book Horsetrader it was stated that Golden Fleece passed more horses from Tattenham Corner to the winning post than any other Derby winner. This is definitely NOT true. Even if Golden Fleece did pass every horse in that race (there were 18 runners), he did not pass as many as Psidium in 1961. There were 28 runners in that race and he was in 23rd position entering the straight, so he passed 22 runners. Golden Fleece was a great Derby winner, though.

+jsilkcut Pat Eddery passed away so this is a tribute to a great jockey and this was one of his memorable victories.
It's a shame we never saw more if Golden Fleece, but judging on what we did, he was a very good horse.
