    Yuragu, one of those B-M songs that tends to be overlooked, because their catalog is so freakin awesome that it's impossible to give them all the same attention. For me is one of the hidden gems from Brand New Maid, alongside with Brand-New Road, that everytime i get back to it i think "wow, this is even better than i remembered!"

    Just my two cents. They are surprising because they have never been lazy in trying to surprise. For that, you have to have a high level of selfdemand and a great love for what you do. Plus they can always use any combination to do it because, for them, no instrument including vocals is more important than another. So hooks, bridges and even solos are always amazing combinations of their six instruments. Thanks Ryan! I love these deep dives.

    When I hear older song like Yuragu, YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc., or even earlier like Key, Be OK and Forward, I realize there's no other band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. They are truly a level above other bands and I'm just counting the days for their worldwide "overnight success" to be realized. Their 2022 USA Tour will certainly help. Thx, Ryan!

    This is so worthwhile just listening to the vocals and how they intertwine and overlap. This might be sacrilegious but I would trade Miku's rhythm guitar playing for an increased vocal presence from her, as on this song and many of their earlier works like Freezer or Arcadia Girl.

    I love how they and other Japanese artists incorporate traditional melodic structures in their application to a modern rock motif, ie: main riff on this song! So much of their culture is conveyed through the flavors/colors, chosen from the palate! Just brilliant! True artistry.

    It's never mentioned in the booklets of the first three albums (except Alone) but I'm sure they participated in the musical arrangements of all the songs they were given to play, especially from Brand New Maid. In fact these good songs belong to them a little because of the Band Maid touch they contain. Likewise, the harmony of Saiki's and Miku's voices is their own signature. Thanks Ryan for reminding us of Yuragu.😉

    These girls are gifted with so much creativity that they can do different things in every verse of every song and know that they can keep doing it endlessly. Other bands find a hook and make an entire album (or career) from that one hook. What other bands create for an entire album Band-Maid will often do two or three times in one verse.

    It must be because of the depth of composing that I'm rediscovering new 'threads' when I listen to their songs time and again. Read this on another site, a Band-Maid Fan (Davey Boyd) had written the following:
    Kanami: "Hey I have 1226 new ideas'
    BM Management: 'For the next album'?
    Kanami: 'No, the next song'.
    Needless to say, I was in tears from laughing so hard. Boyd had a real winner!!

    The opening riff shoots me back to early-'70s hard rock; sounds like it could've been on one of KISS's earlier albums, even after Akane comes in. YURAGU also sounds like it would be at home on The Donnas' "Turn 21" as well. At least at first, because that all goes out the window by the time the rest of the band comes in. No, B-M didn't write this song, but they certainly show how to improve on a tried and true rock formula. It's amazing how they can take something that could sound dated and make it fresh. Love this track.

      I like it all, but they definitely might be heading that way.
      The signs were there in this one. Ryan pointed out the drums in the outro; start out as a straight eight but after four bars or so she starts going freaking insane. I mean, she mixes it up in the first verse, but nothing like the outro.
      And think about what they could do with a 90 minute opera. Developing an epic story. Evolving leitmotivs. Interspersing dark emotions with comic relief. Building up, letting down, building up again. Feel good rock anthems, tender love songs, angry tirades. They are artists, I know they can do it. If they want to.

    between Akane, Misa and Kanami there is this effective musical communication that sets BM apart by itself. Each pays attention to what the other is trying to play and their ability to read each other is amazing, you can see that when watching them live. I think they are a magic trio. As to Kanami, I have not heard a solo as of yet that wasn't`t placed, arranged and played just perfect. I sure do not want to take away any limelight from Miku as she is only playing her instrument for about 6years, she is doing an amazing job by now and we all know singing and playing is not easy.

    That last 25 seconds of the track could have easily been like a quality stoner rock band closing a desert sessions. The versatility attached to the undeniable talent of these girls were always there and became a centrefold for their evolution. It's always intriguing to revisit this album as a milestone in the band's history. Of course in view of all the well
    known facts of not having full ownership of songwriting...etc, one can still feel the developing sense of self assurance in their talent, vision and direction. The rest is history...
    Yes Ryan, spot on of course...these are five individuals who musically and also personally give breathing space to each other to let everyone shine, thus enhance the strength of the collective.
    It would be interesting to see a reaction to "Before Yesterday". Not particularly popular with reactors as the song is pleasant but nothing special. Yet I feel it's one of the most significant and quite emotional MV for Maidiacs as of course it was the time when the world (and the great music city of Seattle in particular) first showed the girls love and appreciation and of course the event that convinced MISA to continue with the band. In view of the upcoming US tour it would seem a nice slice of nostalgia.

    Love Yuragu!
    I wonder how different the recorded version is from composer Atsushi Yamaguchi's original demo? It would be interesting to hear how the song evolved after the maids got their hands on it 😀
    Miku and Saiki actually explain the lyrics (a rare thing) they wrote for Yuragu in an interview with Natalie in 2016:
    YURAGU is about "pretending not to know what you're talking about, but I really know what you mean" 🤔

    • @RyanMear

      Interesting, for sure.... I've wondered the same thing about their older recordings. If be very interested in the differences or lack thereof.

    It is almost like BM "wears" Saiki and Miku's vocals like a disguise. Those vocals stripped from their songs would be fantastic acapella. Conversely, every BM song could, almost, be made into an instrumental. Yes, separately they are that good.
    The vocals are so clean and pure, even at speed, that it may well draw in listeners who may not be the biggest metal or hard rock fans; I'm not big harsh vocals man myself. Once captured, it is then fairly well impossible to then not hear the incredible instrumentation and arrangements.
    Anyway, the only downside for me it that a lot of what I used to listen to has been relegated to the "meh" bin.

    Hi Rayan, great and sincere reaction, as always, often listening to Band-Maid in your reactions is better, you help me get excited.
    I am very curious and would like to know if you managed to find a ticket for the Maids tour in the USA, maybe 2 or 3 tickets.
    If you are going to the concert, as I hope, remember to bring something with you to control your heart pressure, a Band-Maid concert can be dangerous for coronaries.
    I don't know if it's related to the tour, but it looks like Miku and Saiki are doing heavy dance lessons, something new could happen maybe.
    I greet you with affection in the hope that you can tell me, "I WILL GO TO THAT FUCKING CONCERT!" 💖💖😎😎👍👍

    Ryan sir, off topic of this song but I'd be interested if you or anyone else know what was going on with Kanami's right arm in the Shinkiba Studio Coast Concert from 2017. At first I thought she was wearing some wierd jewellry on her right hand but then realised on closer inspection that she had a massive plaster (band aid) on the back of her right hand that ran right up to her elbow. Had she suffered some injury or was it some form of injury prevention measure similar to what athletes will apply over certain muscles? It's bugging me now as I thought Kanami was Imortal and didn't suffer injuries.

    • @greylocke100
      @greylocke100 2 роки тому +10

      I saw that too. I was a medic in the army and an EMT after I got out. It criss crossed her forearm and her wrist was also wrapped. It almost matched her skin tone perfectly, but under the varying lights I noticed it went from the inside of her elbow across the forearm to the other side to the wrist, the second one went from outside her forearm at the elbow across to the wrist, where hidden under the scrunchie you could just barely see the tape peeking out.
      From my daughter having to see the sports medicine specialist after she got hurt running cross country, and getting similar tapework done on her knee and ankle, I think Kanami might have been having some inflammation and the tape was to help alleviate that. Remember this was the last concert of a 6 or 7 month tour. The Ladies were performing 2 and sometimes 3 concerts a week. The way she plays, is it any wonder if her forearm and wrist were bothering her?

    • @npmushead6543
      @npmushead6543 2 роки тому +7

      I also noticed it.
      I've read before in an interview with KANAMI that she improved the way she holds the pick (from near the tip of her index finger to the side). In fact, in recent videos she seems to be using the side of her index finger, which seems to be fine now. (IMO)
      I guess her tendons tend to get tired when she holds the pick near the tip of it.

    • @RyanMear
      @RyanMear  2 роки тому +6

      That's interesting. I've held the pick that seemingly wrong way for years and years and I know there are limitations. Since my elbow surgery (severe tendinitis) I had to alter how I hold it. Much the same as you're describing. It's difficult after 30+ years holding it as you said, toward the tip of the index finger, but necessary to advance my playing.... and cover BAND-MAID songs. They just make the world better.....
