- "Magic" is a 1974 song by Scottish pop rock band Pilot, and was the first hit single for the group. It was written by band members David Paton and Billy Lyall for their debut album, From the Album of the Same Name.
Pilot were a Scottish rock group, formed in 1973 in Edinburgh by David Paton and Billy Lyall. They are best known for their songs "January", "Magic", "Just A Smile" and "Call Me Round".
Both Paton and Lyall had briefly been substitute members of the Bay City Rollers before that band's breakthrough. Joined by drummer Stuart Tosh, the band recorded several demos during 1972 and 1974. They were signed to a management contract with Nick Heath and Tim Heath, sons of British bandleader Ted Heath, and John Cavanagh. In due course they signed to a worldwide recording deal with EMI Records. After the recording of their debut album, From the Album of the Same Name, guitarist Ian Bairnson (who had played on the album as a session musician) joined the band permanently.
The 1974 single "Magic" from their first album, produced by Alan Parsons and written by Lyall and Paton, was a No. 11 UK and No. 5 US success. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in August 1975.

I was a teen in the 1970s. The best of times.
A very sophisticated band - for the time. Great vocals, guitar and writing/producing. Memories of myself in '74 [some good, some cringeworthy!].
I was in junior high. I feel your pain.
"Very sophisticated for the time?" LoL, you're trolling right? 70s had bands like Rush, ELP, Boston, Kansas, Pink Floyd, ELO, King Crimson, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention - just to name a few. 1970's music had oceans of sophistication.

Born '63 awesome song...now 61, still enjoy. 60s 70s 80s best music
I was born in 1970, but my father listened to a lot of music like this, so I grew up knowing the great popular music of the 60s, 70s, and 80s (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Abba, Franck Pourcel, Fenati, Bee Gees, Chicago, Al Stewart, The Association, The Mamas & The Papas, Italian New Wave songs, and of course, Pilot and much more). Over time, my favorite music became that of the great classical masters, from the Renaissance to Shostakovich and Pettersson, but these songs remain with me and will always accompany me.

They got permission from the rights holder Sony Music Publishing to use the song. Of the two guys who wrote the song, one of them Billy Lyall died of AIDS in the 1980s. The other David Paton is believed to have made millions because of the use of Magic in the Ozempic ad and, I think, from more people listening to the original song on music streaming services because of the commercial jingle.

They used to play with the Alan Parson Project, you can see the bass player at the Games People Play video!
Two hits.... January.
Lots of their work can be heard on Alan Parsons Project albums. (He actually produced this song as well.) David Paton sung lead vocals on many tracks, Ian Bairnson did pretty much all the guitar parts and even Stuart Tosh played drums on the first records. Paton and Bairnson also appear on early Kate Bush records.

@@marbananta Covid 19 is curable. Diabetes is not. You got it the wrong way around!!
@@tennis5011 I think it is important for people in general to not conflate "curable" and "survivable." I saved the life of a friend in a diabetic coma with pulmonary embolism and pneumonia whose blood sugar was through the roof, I was told. The last I heard, researchers don't know yet if people who recovered from COVID-19 are at increased risk of getting it again or not. As far as I know, fortunately neither diabetes nor COVID-19 have been in my actual family, so I am no expert on this, but I read a lot of newspaper articles. It does seem to me like diabetics keep living with it, as long as they live, it's just a matter of keeping it manageable.

You just described my then 10 year old life during summer vacation biking to the beach. My yellow Phillip's transitory radio was taped to my handlebars and went everywhere I did!
