    This is why I love the quarterly, slow journalism magazine Delayed Gratification: each issue covers events of the prior three months, so they take time to be accurate, in depth, provide context, and offer expert analysis. Because they look retrospectively, you can read about the medium and long-term impact of the news. It's also very colorful and engaging and presents data in very interesting visual ways!

      there's also the Media Ownership Monitor by Reporters sans frontières; it offers analysis about who owns the media for many many countries, taking into accounts conglomerates, family ties, as well as connections to ruling classes/power! it's a super helpful tool to understand each country's media landscape and to see who the free press actually is (Mediapart in France for example) :)

    • @allyson--
      @allyson-- 2 роки тому

      :-( for context, is this statement general to where you work? Or does it apply to waterways everywhere? ... & is there a feasible way to prevent the issue from worsening?

    • @jamesjoy4636
      @jamesjoy4636 2 роки тому +9

      @@allyson-- I'm based on Australia. A lot of people seem to believe that sewage in waterways is only common to "less developed countries", but unfortunately that's not true at all. Through conventional approaches to water management in western, middle- and high-income countries, the sewage system becomes overwhelmed during storms and is released into waterways. My understanding is that this is a fairly common thing in many countries and is an efficient solution to an overwhelmed system - But it isn't often talked about since governments wouldn't want people thinking that their business-as-usual approaches are actually harmful. Not talking about it also helps to hide the fact that it's a intentional aspect of present day water management to essentially release sewage into water ways, a thing that the public may consider as something that only happened "back in the olden days". Different councils and governments from different areas will obviously have their own individual approaches to dealing with the situation however. For instance, some may launch effective clean-up responses, or warn citizens about it, while others try to hide it under the rug.

    • @jamesjoy4636
      @jamesjoy4636 2 роки тому +6

      This is also just one way that sewage can end up in waterways. Aging infrastructure that's not well maintained is another, and can be common to a lot of places around the world.

    Have you read The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green? There's a chapter in it about the news (well more specifically CNN in the US but also generally the news) that I think is really well-written. In it he talks about how the news often don't talk about processes and ongoing developments and focus more on events and how that can be very misleading. He talks about how most Americans assume child mortality has been going up globally but it actually has been going down. This kinda info is just never on the news because it's a slowly but steadily declining number. Even ongoing crises like climate change or COVID are reported about in events, e.g. a new report or discovery coming out. Or they're reported on in "grim milestones" (e.g. how many people have died of COVID) and that that kind of reporting doesn't give the right background information to contextualize the facts they are being told. Like when it is reported that ICUs have run out of beds to treat COVID patients, it is rarely contextualised with the context of the process of how the healthcare system was developed in a way where that can happen and what choices let to the current state of the system.
    There's also an anecdote John Green tells, about how one of his roommates at the time had family in Iraq during the 2003 invasion and so he and his roommates were all watching the news constantly around then (they later learned the family members were all okay!). He talks about how they were all watching footage showing Baghdad and the reporter talking about how the hatred and anger is visible in the streets. The camera pans to destroyed streets and houses, one home with a hole in a wall covered with plywood and there is graffiti in Arabic on it. John Green's flatmate starts to laugh and they ask what's funny. The graffiti, the "hatred visible in the streets" said "Happy Birthday Sir, despite the circumstances".

    Maybe this is very selfish and/or naïve, but I've stopped watching/reading a lot of news. Doing so has proven to improve my mental health significantly. If something is happening in the world that is big enough I know I'll come across it on Twitter or someone will tell me about it. Rarely can I as an individual do much about any issues the news covers so why should I fill my mental bandwidth with these stories. I'll support the causes I believe in and try my best to be a kind, empathetic and good person but beyond that trying to focus on my own happiness has been so important. Think about what life was like before the 24hr news cycle and even international news. The stillness of that time is something I find myself chasing these days. I don't believe humans were build with the capacity to have this much news shoved down their throat at any given time.

      Yes! Big ABC fan here. I love Paul Barry's dry attacks on issues with the media in MediaWatch. I was actually thinking about the ABC when Leena was talking about how news can't create change. I can think of so many Four Corners investigations that led to law reform (e.g. Saxon Mullins and consent laws) or 7:30's investigation into animal racing that led to improvements in standards etc.

    Thank you Leena for pointing out how broken the news industry is. I always try to remember that the goal for the news is not to keep the populace informed of the most current and important and true information. It is to keep as many consumers looking at advertisements for as long as possible. And on top of that they all have an agenda.

    The Guardian is gold though. I'm not from the UK but read it often and every time I go on the website it makes me so grateful that they have calm, serious reporting on the front page. You need to scroll down quite a bit to get the opinion and fluff pieces, all of which are very clearly marked. This is what I want from a newspaper. Informed, balanced (where appropriate) reporting on current news without some random journalist pushing their one-sided views at me which have nothing to do with news. Not to mention that they are the only newspaper to take climate change seriously. It is still a rarity in 2022 for a newspaper to have an ecology section, much less a climate change one. They do and they put it at the top often.

    • @phoebeel
      @phoebeel 9 днів тому

      I find the guardian to be increasingly doom-porney. They say almost daily that conflict is "escalating" and climate change is becoming more irreversible everyday. I still read them for the best international left leaning analysis of world politics but they truly aren't impartial to a bit of "the world is ending tomorrow" discourse

    I’ve found consuming news sources that have a built in limit, like daily podcasts or newsletters (or even a physical newspaper) so much better for my mental health than scrolling through a news website or social media. I feel more informed but also generally better.
    I also find it useful to have a balance of international, national, and local news. There’s often so much emphasis on national news (at least here in the us) that the other two get pushed to the side. Local news is especially good because you have a higher chance of actually being able to effect the outcome and feel any sort of agency.

    I work in the US as a graphic designer for an exclusively local newspaper that covers just our county of rural farming communities and one major "city" (really, still a small small small city). I find it very fulfilling, as we do report on a lot of positive stories especially with school children doing cool things, or any community activism and things like that. We also only have about 10 total employees, so the boss is in and around us all the time and is good about taking feedback from both the community and coworkers.

I’m now going to look into the news sources I consume and see where their motives lie. Thank you for making these!

    leena this is a great exploration of the news ecosystem. one part of the discussion I would love to talk about is the role of publicly owned news outlets. not so much with newspapers but radio and TV as well as internet news, the ABC (Australian version of the BBC) has been eroded over the last couple of decades by conservative/neoliberal politicians. we've had the ABC stripped of more than one billion dollars of funding by a conservative government, journalists fired for critiquing government policy etc. it still manages to be the most trusted news organisation in the country, but that's more of an indictment of our system. all but a handful of news outlets are owned by one of two families. happily, the guardian here is very high quality and has managed to avoid the transphobic editorial bent of its uk sibling.

    Fun fact: the color of a river has more to do with what type of sediment is underlying it than how polluted it is. So a river that is brown isn't necessarily dirty, as in polluted. I mean,bsure, I guess you could say it was dirty because it had dirt in it. Hence why when you go on Google Earth and the Amazon is a dark brown.

    This video is excellent as per! But I have to quickly say that as someone who works in river conservation, unfortunately many many UK rivers do contain sewage...you just can't always see it discharging for a number of reasons, one being because the pipes aren't exposed like they have been in the drought. The news coverage we have now of sewage going into rivers is crucial because it's something that has been happening and hasn't been talked about for decades and we need people to get upset about it! Please take a look at the Rivers Trust sewage map for more info!

    Great video, Leena! I hate empathy in the news. Step 1 is ask people affected if they will be affected by said tragedy and watch them cry. When the news has tired of that they move onto quoting X MP sending "thoughts and prayers" to the families involved in said tragedy without ever addressing legislation that they could change to prevent another similar tragedy. It makes me really mad and I don't see how its news. Of course people are sad about it! But people seem to think that because it annoys me, I don't find said tragedy tragic. I do but hearing about the thing was enough, I assume the persons involved have friends and family that will be affected and I assume (perhaps wrongly?) that MPs aren't completely heartless and DO think that it was a tragedy. Going over and over peoples feelings in the news is "Darling... Not news".

    I’ve somehow got into the habit of watching the news before work, BBC cause I’m lazy whoops, and it’s kinda meh. They at least talked about the rocket that’s going to go to the moon (soon I hope) but generally it’s just woe is us the world is shit. But there’s this creator on tiktok who talks about science and innovation coming out of Africa and it’s AWESOME. that’s what I’d like to hear about, all the cool things we’re doing

    • @HankaAAR
      @HankaAAR 2 роки тому

      I'm curious, what's good news about yet another rocket going to the moon, where we've already been, to prepare for more space tourism? Don't we have enough forms of high carbon transport for fun?

      @@HankaAAR I was sharing that I personally find value in scientific innovation and that a lot of it doesn’t get covered unless it’s funded by billionaires. Space tourism isn’t that, and to say we’ve “been there before” is like saying you’ve sat on a train through Bristol and therefore are an expert on Bristol. I was just sharing what personally excites me, I don’t know why you’re attacking me for that.

    • @Gandellion
      @Gandellion 2 роки тому

      @@HankaAAR Also it wasn’t really about the moon expedition, it was more agreeing with what Leena was saying about mainstream news outlets, they often don’t talk about the awesome things that people are doing around the world to give back to their own communities. I say “soon I hope” partly because I know people have worked incredibly hard on this project and also because I suppose I’m a bit of a dreamy idealist, the idea of space exploration and scientific innovation in general is something that I value and am enthused by.
      I apologise for the non answer, I was trying to avoid conflict as I personally find it very hard to cope with. I hope this is better.

    10:33 man dies in bridge accident - About two weeks ago a relatively new bridge in Norway suddenly collapsed while there were people in vehicles on there (I believe it was a truck and a car). Luckily it ended well for everyone but the bridge and the vehicles. The serious newspapers/outlets wrote about all the similar bridges in the country that were closed for immediate further inspection, but a local newspaper I read interviewed one of the people who were on the bridge while it collapsed; she was on her way to her first day as a primary school teacher (aaaawwww!). Romantic coincidence indeed… sigh

    Lifestyle magazines are the same, I don’t trust them. As someone who’s first job was as Marketing and Communications Officer for a big heritage attraction, sooooo many times we wouldn’t get featured unless we also bought an advert. So an event or exhibition would get a little article (not an advertorial, proper write up) only if we took out an advert. So i don’t really trust any recommendations made in woman’s magazines for things like make up or even travel (I showed round quite a few travel journalists in my time). It wasn’t always like that, sometimes reporting was genuine but it really made me stop buying magazines. Also, if there was big news, like a historical find, the amount of times a press release I had written was just copied word for word, even by big news papers, was quite eye opening. I also had to stand in as a “visitor” for press photos quite regularly (looking very interested at something historical) and a highlight was one of the photos being featured as Guardian picture of the day. Seeing little old me in a line up of cool photos from around the globe was pretty cool. But yeah, once you know how the sausage is made, things are never quite the same.

    I don't know whether this is still true but when I was learning who owns the news about... Eek 20 years ago...there was a big discussion in class about how while technically news Corp couldn't own anymore news as per the regulator there were other ways to get around this, e.g at the time Murdoch owned satellite TV channels which Richard Desmond's p*rn broadcast on. I could be misremembering it but ultimately as well as having a very small number of people owning much of the news, worth thinking about how many of them all know each other/interconnections of owners and editors (which I know you touched on Leena, because let's face it how else was BJ hired to work for a newspaper? 🧐🧐

    This is a very interesting and important video, but I believe the suicide-example was not well chosen. News outlets often choose not to (deeply) report a suicide because it generally leads to an increase in suicide (copycat or werther-effect). This is a very serious problem, because while suicide and its prevention should be talked about, when it is talked about, it gets worse.

    • @maleahlock
      @maleahlock 2 роки тому +2

      From what I could find there seems to be a 50/50 split on whether this has anything to do with reporting or not. Most of that discourse has nothing to do with any evidence/research and no verifiable sources are listed.
      My shire reports heavily on suicides and mental health issues and it has led to a massive decrease in cases. This is because the whole community is aware and informed and have put steps in place to recognise and address the issues. So 🤷 from my communities personal experience I don't think pretending it doesn't exist will help anyone.
