This work was a tremendous success when first performed in February 1923 with the composer himself at the piano. It did much to cement his reputation as a great craftsman of chamber music, since the score is especially demanding for such a limited ensemble. Korngold became adept at writing chamber music that sounded larger than the ensemble for which it was written, mainly achieved by liberal use of double and triple stopping for the stringed instruments.
Dedicated to the sculptor Gustinus Ambrosi, the work uses the song Mond so gehst du wieder auf from the Vier Abschiedslieder as the basis for an intricately crafted set of variations. Korngold used the piece to experiment with many aspects of chamber music, not the least of which is extreme metrical flexibility, with no less than fifty four changes of time signature in the brief work.
Genius. Thrilled to have discovered this. As a cellist, I just want to dive in. As a composer, I’m floored by how his orchestration and harmonies are so unique to him. What a masterpiece!
That bit at the end of 17 min is really moving, wow.
The most majestic first theme I've ever heard, I swear.
Sublime work of art, currently playing this with my quintet
Beside his musical genius, Korngold's gift was conveying feeling with such precision and intensity.
Some music, you wish it never ends.... This Adagio! sublime.
This is my favorite piece in Existence
My favorite piano quintet, should be played more often

Fantastic performance of one of my favourite chamber works! I've come back to this performance several times and am still blown away by the ensemble playing. Right from the start, every gesture is so exquisitely shaped both dynamically and rhythmically, and you can feel the push and pull of each phrase so clearly - not an easy feat to achieve as an ensemble, particularly in such a difficult and complex piece! I can only imagine the amount of work they must have put into this. Thank you for uploading this gem of a performance with the score!
What a lush first subject; I'm in love already. Thanks for the upload!

@@orgue2999 Fell in love with Korngold's work as a teenager when i borrowed a library copy of Hefetz performing the Rozsa concerto and found on the other side of hte LP, the Korngold ocncerto. And then the film scores. And the symhony, operas, etc. Hope you have completed the PhD now. I never did!
