supersimon126 May I suggest watch?v=ecPzCTYaPew for you; it is in German (GRIP magazine) with onboard Delta S4 material. Even the drivers are truly excited about it & can't stop smiling afterwards ...
The supercharger whine from the front is good, the turbo/exhaust noise from the back is great, and the mix of the two from a horizontal angle makes me wanna buy one
Holy sh#$ that is FAST, lest we forget the great Henri Toivonen. The S4 was one of the most difficult and stressful cars to drive ever made this side of 1950, a technological marvel that eschewed logic and safety in favour of the purest, rawest performance conceivable. Ostensibly an engine, sitting on top of fuel tanks wrapped in plastic, it was skittish and fragile, nervous and angry, beautifully bonkers. Truly an iconic vehicle.
It was also 4WD...the most exagerated version which never raced (suppression of Group B specs) was the Delta ECV II and was credited of 600HP in the offroad settings and 800HP for the tarmaq races. It's probably the fastest thing ever built for short tracks and tight turns.
Honestly thank God it never raced. Doesn't matter how good of a driver you are, there's a limit to where even the fastest reaction time wouldn't b quick enough
1759cc ..remember it guys!!! ^_^ One of the best car ever made... Lancia had already prepared the ECV AND ECV1 who were the next step in the S4! Triflux engine...20 years before the rest of the world, and only one name : "Ing. Claudio Lombardi"
A twincharged S4 actually can do 0-60 in 2 seconds on gravel, while F1 cars take 2.6 seconds to do the same on asphalt with grippy tires. Do some research.
To be honest, that's comparing apples to oranges. So just to nerd out for a few minutes (all numbers except Horsepower in metric, sorry for eventual inconvenience): If we compare the first F1 V6 cars from 2014 since this is around when you posted the comment: F1 Mercedes 2014 (The one with most powerful engine at the time, I think?) Weight: 642-691 Kg HP: 870 (Mercedes) Tire width (Rear): 325 mm. I saw something about rules changing later to wider ones which where 405 mm Only RWD, so a total of 650 mm of tire width to put the power down The Lancia Weight: ca 890 Kg HP: 500 (In races, I know they pumped a test up to 1000 Hp. I love Group B, haha.) Tire width for 1.3-1.6 Liter class (All tires): 457 mm AWD so a total of ca 1828 mm to put those 500 HP down. That's more than double the contact patch of the F1 car and 200 more Kilos on top to keep traction. Basically, the F1 cars have to much power to weight, thus their 0-100 suffers since there is no tire that can put all that power in the ground at low speed without wheelspin and still be practical on track. But when they do get up a handful of gears and can clap the pedal down, they go like damn bullets to 300+ Km/h.
@@raidkoast yeah, but Delta S4 was pure mechanical with manual shifting and no aerodynamics .. any sports/supercar nowadays is a videogame in demo mode ... My neighbor' friend is rich, a racer and owns EVERY Ferrari of last 40 years, he said some older Ferraris had such a heavy clutch pedal, almost no women, and most people could not drive it
@0oz Simple: with a big turbo you get turbo lag, so to eliminate ANY turbo lag, those crafty engineers bolted onto the engine a supercharger, which being belt/chain driven, doesn't have ANY lag. So the S4 used the instant boost from the supercharger and then when the turbo boost cut in, vented to atmosphere the excess boost from the supercharger to keep the head on the engine. To my knowledge it is the only rally car, or racing car that has used both at the same time.
@MrJohann64 You're not wrong! I lean towards the Quattro because i used to see/hear/smell an ex Hannu Mikola S1 Sport regularly racing up the hill at Shelsley Walsh driven by Tom Hammond. I've never had the pleasure of an S4 Delta in the flesh. Tom knew how to pose. His tow car for the race car was a road going homologated S1!

@markandrach It seems that Toivonen took a good lap time in Estoril in 1986 with the Lancia ECV, that was the next step of S4 but never raced because of Toivonen accident in Corse
@thaN0s1993 quattro for 1986 was approx 600 bhp. Take a look at the RS200 that is being aimed at Pikes Peak to see what Group B could have achieved, Audi and Lancia were reputed to be testing cars with 1000 bhp for 1987.
@82coxy I'd assume that's where the air flow goes to cool the engine after being sucked through those massive side vents. Could be wrong though, Think it's mid engine...

@ICaMoSI turbos do not make that rc car sound, only superchargers do, this car is NOT supercharged, it is turbo chaged. the sound you are asking about actually is the sound of the gears in the transmission, i believe they are straight cut gears (which produce this whine sound) the reason you hear it when the car is faced towards the camera, is because the exhaust is directed in the other direction, when the car is viewed from the rear, the sound of the exhaust over powers the sound of the gears.
From the front you hear the supercharger, from the rear you hear the turbo.
