Looking great, but now the videos REALLY clash with the static backgrounds. XD

Wish we could explore this in real time but it's awesome how gorgeous these environs *still* look

The environments look great, but Catherine's and Yeesha's faces creeped me out. Is there something like that without facial reconstruction?

i like the upscaling making the live action look like a painterly animation. I could see another layer of AI building a a cell animation around the face to rerender a photo realistic performance.

Myst III was the sweet-spot, technologically, no? Live actors, a free camera, but the surrealness of the use of stills... it also had a balanced difficulty, I think!

How did you get the pattern matching puzzle in the linking room to be so smooth? it drops down to 1-2 fps on my pc when trying to do that puzzle. Makes it ubearable.

      Hi @Jaggith..
Indeed, I didn't notice it until you mentioned it. FPS drops to 1/3(120 to 40) from normal when clicking that ocular.
My monitor runs at 120Hz 4k(LG C1 oled) which means solid 120fps with vsync enabled, so that's why I didn't notice.
Maby you can do those tasks without mods(rename mods folder) and save and then continue with mods.
      Edit.
I tested that also on win10 Enterprise with same hardware and latest drivers and it's indeed unplayable.
Linux version performs better and I think it worked before in windows as well.
Which gpu do you have, though i think it's not gpu issue.

The upscaling really messes up the people and makes everything look too sharp and plastic. Not a fan actually

Okay explain it to me please, as if I was 5. What is AI upscaling? A program actually enhances the resolution of images? So I can give it a 480p image from the 90s and he will make it into a 1080p one?

In this case it's upscaling with pure synthetic data(models). A brief introduction to Real-ESRGAN ua-cam.com/video/fxHWoDSSvSc/v-deo.html
Anyway, my approach was compromise with stock models.

@@MsSepeteus Jeebus bro, I asked you to explain to me like a 5 year old and you refered me to an even more technicaly explanation than the one you gave me. I have no understanding of any of this stuff, just want to know what it is in simpler terms :)

@@jeanjacqueslundi3502 sorry, it works like you said, except increasing resolution isn't enough.
Classical upscaling is, in the worst case, simply replicating the nearest pixel to increase the size of the image, which is bad.
AI upscaling increases the size of the image in a clever way with synthetic data and several enhancements. How clever it is depends on the model and dataset.

Pretty much what you said, yes. You give the original small picture to an AI model that is trained to make up all the detail that is missing from the original small picture when it is scaled up, but not to make up new stuff, that is not actually part of the original. But as the other resposnes here suggest, it is actually way more complicated than that.

Kinda... Well, "mixed feelings", I'd say. Firstly, the "new, improved" effect is kinda ruined by "movie inlays" (which are not enhanced "for technical reasons/ limitations", which is understandable), so the result is a bit jarring, I'd say.
And then, last but not least, this general, "overtaking" notion of "visuals make the game, so the better, the better".
Well, guess what? No. They don't *_"make"_* the game (at least not within this genre), they only "enhance the experience" - and then only up to a point. It's *_the story_* that makes it - and since this is already an unreal world (in a fairy-tale or ancient sagas sense) that we "enter", so we have to suspend our "sense of realism" anyway to enjoy the story - in fact, this is the prerequisite, conditio sine qua non for the enjoyment.
When one reads Andersen's tales (mind you, READS, not "watches that Disney crap"!), like "The Little Mermaid", "The Galoshes of Fortune" or "The Snow Queen", we don't think "nah, that's utter horse manure, that's not how physics works!", do we? Ditto for "Alice in Wonderland" and any other stories "like that" (say, "Harry Potter" for younger readers) - we just have to leave aside our "reason and reasoning" entering these worlds and agree upon certain "conventionality/ (un)reality" of the story.
One just can't enjoy a ride on a flying dragon - or a magic carpet - holding tight to his or her knowledge of "non-existence of dragons" and "carpets don't fly".
And since we agreed already to suspend the "sense of realism" why do we insist so much on "visual realism"? Granted, a well-printed book with nice, big illustrations is nicer to read - as a six-years old kid I read Andersen's tales (I learned to read when I was five), and I had two books with them - one was a big (bigger than A4 paper size) with beautiful illustration by Jan Marcin Szancer - and the other one, much smaller, in an odd 16 by 20 cm size, with few and far between black and white "line only" sketches. I liked the former one more, but then the "The Little Mermaid" story, in that "lesser" one, was just equally - if not more - touching as the "The Snow Queen" or "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" from the "better" one.
But I digress here, and anyway Grim Fandango was (and still is) a truly captivating game, even with its crude graphics (to the "laughable" point sometimes), and same goes for original MYST game - and frankly, I'd prefer even that point-and-click "hypercard" MYST over Myst III Exile (or the latter sequels) any day.
In fact I find the whole narrative of "M-III-E" kinda artificial, and smacking of early wokeism and "DEI" nonsense, with hardly any bearing of the core narrative. Very much on a wanting side, just like that "Starship Titanic" and lot of other titles.
Nice scenery, mind-boggling (to the point of insanity) puzzles, with bunch of "renewables/ peace/ women leadership" hogwash thrown in for a better reception among snowflakes and "narcissi" - but that's about it. "Beautiful house, nobody home", as they say.
So, I guess making the house even more nicey-nicey ain't going to make it more "occupied", innit? - Or so I think...
