    🍁When you come to the West Coast of Canada you will love skiing - and eating and shopping- at Whistler Village. Then come back in the summer and learn to surf in Tofino & visit the mountains in Strathcona Park & beaches in Parksville on Vancouver Island🌿

    I've lived in Toronto almost all my life and have visited the far west end (Vancouver, BC) and east end (Halifax, PEI) but never Alberta but now it has shot straight up to the top of my list. Thanks for sharing your journey with us and putting so much thought and work into your videos! We love coming along with you on your trips! The editing was superb as well! Gotta give Simon a shout out and he most definitely deserves the Employee of the Month/Year/Always award! 🌟❤️

    Have lived in Alberta for almost 40 years. In that time i have experienced snowfall every month of the year. A few inches of snow oneyear on Canada day. On another year, 2 days in the middle of August almost a foot of snow. Then on another year, 20 celcius above the whole month of December. Since we already had had snow earlier, the ski hills were already open, we had people skiing in shorts and t shirts. Alberta, where you can have all 4 seasons in one day.

    It's interesting to hear people's comments and how they want to see Canada. It makes me feel so proud and blessed to live here. Funny thing though, the farthest I've gone East is just to the edge of Manitoba ( from BC). I hope to someday go all the way to the other coast. It's just so dang big...

    Such a great thorough Q&A, and Simon should definitely be tooting his horn as the editing as everyone else has also said was pretty flippin amazing 🙌🏻👏🏻📹 and it did feel like we were there experiencing it all with you. I’m with Simon re the driving, we did 2 road trips on the west coast of the US and I loved driving there, especially in the quieter states like Utah, Nevada and Arizona. My husband drove in the busier cities we went to, but I agree the more you do it the more confident you get. My husband wants to do an RV one at some point and I’d definitely do that. Gonna have to check out this Peter guy now Emma’s name dropped him twice 😂☺️ Thanks again for all the work you do to bring us such great content ❤️

    We’re San Franciscans, but did a year of grad school in Indiana. We decided to take a month to drive back with our cat, and sent our household furnishings and one car back separately. We saw approximately the western 2/3 of the country, taking a southern route because it was February. It was a blast, but our poor cat didn’t enjoy it much, we just couldn’t bear to put her in the cargo hold of a plane, and the airlines were very discouraging, saying animals could freeze to death. So, we distance-drove on one day, then left her securely in a motel/hotel the next, and did local touring.

    I loved watching this! 💕What’s funny is I live in Alberta and I just got back a couple days ago from Europe for the first time, and I’ve been talking about Europe the way to talk about Alberta. I went to Europe and I’m like “ this is so different and interesting”, the same thing you’re saying about my home that I’m used to and I love it. If you ever come back you have to stay at the Jasper Park Lodge. It’s my favourite hotel. Love your videos!!

    Emma...I live in Green Bay Wisconsin ( the dairy state lol) and my husband and I just got back from your beautiful Country and all through Scotland. We were fascinated by the topography. It’s so beautiful! I would call it Pastoral...especially Scotland and the Lake District and Cotswold area. Didn’t make it to Cornwall😢 But we feel like your country and Scotland looks so different then America. We loved it so much. The sheep the hairy cows all over. The stone walls/fencing 😍😍 Your amazing OLD buildings which are breathtaking . America just seems to tear down and build new. Nooooooo 😢😢🤦‍♀️ I think we must all love what we don’t have. BTW... love your channel and your style. So classic with flair! Love you guys! SO glad y’all had fun in Canada.

    Just finished watching the videos about your Alberta trip. I know travelling is more difficult at the moment but as a BC resident, when you do manage to come over this way, I highly recommend taking ferries around the Gulf Islands and taking a few days to visit Tofino on Vancouver Island. There's so much to do in Tofino - hikes, kayaking, surfing and wonderful beaches, hot springs, eagle, whale and sea lion watching, some great restaurants. Camping there is great but there are also luxury hotels. Whichever way you want to go, book months in advance as it is very very popular. Midsummer (July, August) is the time to visit BC. In spring, fall and winter the weather is more unpredictable and it tends to rain a lot.

    Well hey, it's so fun to watch you two talk about the trip. Re time of year, I would say just after the main season is probably a great choice. When we went it was in June, so just before the busiest season, and Lake Louise was still iced over! So it wasn't all blue like in the famous photos. Locals told us the ice normally just sinks one day! Re driving, I think it's the width of the road. Plus there's so often a hard shoulder over there, which means you can just pull over to check directions or whatever. About the giant car (and being on the other side of the road), it's probably useful that hire cars over there are so often automatic; gives you one less thing to think about. Re temperature: in the Rockies, whether US or Canada, it always seems the air is much drier than in the UK so it's pretty usual for there to be a fairly big temperature change during a given day.
    Watching you talk about animals and scenery, I hope you get to go to BC! So beautiful. You might really like Alaska too. (But a friend of ours from San Francisco who moved to Alaska told us bear bells don't really help that much. He learned to use a handgun so he can take it along on hunting and fishing trips and hikes up there for self-defence because of the bears. Eeeek!)
    So glad you had a great time. Thanks for making this video!

    When traveling in North America, I think it’s worth the extra cost to stay in the grand old lodges built in the 19th and early 20th Century, especially those in the National Parks, the atmosphere is worth it. Of course, these often have to be booked up to a year in advance. On other days, staying in roadside motels is fine, I personally like the Best Western chain of independent hotels/motels, they are always really nice, vary a lot and have local flavor, and are not too expensive.

You guys would love New Zealand in a campervan, if you want to do an RV that’s the trip we did this year. If you come out further west in a future Canada trip, Vancouver + Whistler + Tofino is a good start. And if you have time, the Gulf Islands (Galiano, Hornby, Salt Spring etc) are awesome and well-loved by locals, but not well known by tourists. April to September is best, as the winters here are verrrrry rain-y.

    For animal lovers: Yellowstone is AWESOME! We went to Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and we saw countless bisons, some elks, six bears (four black and two grizzly) with one of the black bear cub were so close to us on the side of the road. Good that everyone passing by went slow & quiet (and taking pictures ofc) so there were no disturbances!!! We are also hoping to visit Alberta next year!! I also have to comment on just how extraordinarily lucky you were to happen across a grizzly bear ( "Peyto")... I've visited the mountain parks many many times in my 52 years and have NEVER SEEN ONE!! Lol. I would have shed a few tears myself. Bravo, and I'm so happy you had a great adventure. P.S> - Please come back and explore B.C.- Yoho National Park is tremendous! as the Northern Lights Wolf rescue near Golden. Kananaskis country in Alberta is also worth seeing. :)

    • @jutka12

      I think autumn is the best time for everything there! Bears are preparing for hibrination so feeding heavily. Bear cubs are big enough that they are out and about with their mama bear, so you just might see them. When we’ve gone in the summer, you can’t even get up to Lake Louise as there are just toooo many people. The parking lots are all full and you can’t even stop. We have have stopped by there in March as we thought we’d have Lunch while passing through. It was incredibly beautiful, but sooo cold. There was so much snow all ploughed off the paths it was over 10 feet deep piled up on the sides.

      The Icefield Parkway isn't closed in winter...???

    • @jutka12
      @jutka12 5 років тому +2

      Katie B. While in theory it’s open all year, it closes frequently in the winter due to weather, avalanches etc. But you’re right. Technically it’s open. Out of the last 10 times I’ve driven through there in the winter it’s been closed 8. All of the services including restaurants, gas stations and washrooms are closed as well as the Columbia Icefields themselves. It would be a bummer to come for a week all the way from the UK only to have the road shut down.

      I think we may have driven past this one day and it looked amazing. But then most of the hotels in the area looked fab.

    As a native albertan, it's definitely possible to do it affordably! It really just depends on your expectations. Camping (if booked ahead!) could save you a lot of money. As well as staying at Airbnbs!! Those are way way more inexpensive :)
    I will state for the hiking gear, it really depends on where you are hiking. I would do a lot of research ahead of time, a lot of underprepared people go on some slippery slopes and unfortunately die on the mountain. So make sure to do your research. There are great alberta hiking communities on Facebook and they can tell you everything you will need for every hike from the banff national park to Nordegg, Some areas its a must to have overnight things with you as well as poles and spikes and proper gear in case you get lost. So please just do your research!
    Also We see about 10 moose a year in my town (about an hour away from Calgary), so it really just depends on where you are in Alberta! You never have to get out of your car if you're afraid, and the best bet is if you see one, just walk away. They don't want anything to do with you either!! haha

    Thank you for making this video, great insight into planning a trip. We went to Banff/Jasper/Lake Louise a year ago. I'm jealous you got to visit during the shoulder season. Another advantage of being self employed. :) I would agree with another comment on here. If you like road trips and Canada, you must go to Nova Scotia and drive the Cape Breton Trail.

    So pleased you enjoyed your trip out here to Alberta and would like to venture back in due time. I think in the summertime you would see more animal life but Autumn is a nice time for a road trip. Up until a few years ago, I drove from Edmonton to British Columbia every summer and always saw Elk, Mountain Sheep, and Bear, although most bear sightings were in the Jasper area and in the summer. I really think you both would enjoy B.C. the Okanogan area... Vernon, Kelowna, and Penticton with its abundance of delicious fruit. Also, Salmon Arm and the Shuswap have beautiful lakes but the summers are dry and hot. I just came back from North Vancouver a couple of days ago, great restaurants and the weather was still nice. Love to you both and cuddles to darling fur babies. xo

      Ohhhhh yes! Do a week of house boating on the Shuswap! One of my favourite things to do in the Okanagan in the summer!!! There are some remote areas on the lake!

    Thank you this was very helpful. I get excactly what you mean about driving yourself as I also love the freedom of that and not geing around a crowd of people. BUT I'm a good driver here and dont think I would feel confident driving on the other side of the road ( which is a shame) wish I could practice. I would be going alone so I will have to maybe get brave and drive though ! Thank you for the tips . Also I was very surprised I would have thought your trip cost at least six thousand if not more ! Thank you guys have a great week. Off to gym now !

      Thank you, Im glad you found it helpful. It definitely does take some getting used to in my opinion, but if you could do a city break with a short car hire it may help. I think because Simon is so confident (despite the initial parking ticket 😂🙈) he does it all and so I don't really give myself the chance to adapt, which is my fault as Simon asks if I want to drive but if I done an hour or so I would probably be OK. Hope you get the chance either way 👍🏼

    Regarding chances of seeing animals, it's completely unpredictable - I was in the Rockies, on essentially the same route, the week before Emma and Simon this September. We saw 4 elk total, and that was it for larger animals (plenty of chipmunks etc). Meanwhile a week later they see elk, moose, mountain goats, bears - no fair! :)

    Such an awesome looking trip! Your road trips have inspired us to do one through Italy next year (we are from Australia) do you have any tips or have you done one through Italy?

    • @EmmaHill
      @EmmaHill  5 років тому +1

      We have never driven through Italy so I don't know Im afraid. Only thing I would say is depending on the time of year make sure you have some idea of your route and book your places to stay as it could be busy. 👍🏼

    Loved the Canada vlogs, great editing Simon 👍🏼Beautiful landscapes indeed but when I visited the Uk I remember so many varied stunning areas guys need to take some more trips around the Lake District Wales Scotland . I would disagree Canada is very expensive for those of us whose currency is crap unlike the pound 😂Not the aussie 🇦🇺 dollar 🙁.
