"And you're learning just cause they call themselves friends doesn't mean.. they'll... call..." I hate it, when someone you haven't seen in a long time, who says they'll call, asks how you are. Or when they say they'll see you later, when they have no intention of doing so at all. I knew a guy who told me he is always thinking of me, and said he prays for me all the time. I told him the only thing that bothers me is how lonely I am. I asked him to call or text me, but he'd only ever pray for me.
Amanda! Totally genius! Your voice is so fragile and delicate yet strong and vulerable at the same time! My daughters have also "joined" the renaissance and spread the word about you to all thier friends, with this project and TDD! You are super brilliant and my girls absolutely adore that you are unique, talented, beautiful! They think it is super cool that you have followed your dreams and are living it! Hats off to you from deep south Texas! Amazing is all we can say about this song!
I don't think this is a song that talks about needles as an extremely complicated metaphor. Drugs are a real epidemic, and they affect people very profoundly, even those who are NOT addicted to them. There are many people who seem to be almost insulted that Amanda would write about drugs, thus denying vehemently that this has anything to do with heroin. I have seen what the drug does to people, and this song puts it into perspective brilliantly.
at 3:22 "vivez sans temps mort", translates: "live without dead time". it was graffiti written on a french subway in the 60's - which actually has an extremely Existential meaning to it. Perhaps kiddos this entire album is ms. Palmer going through an existential crisis. Is she allowed to be herself or does she have to conform now to what the public demands she be? If she takes a different direction in her craft(ala U2 circa 90's w/zooropa ) will you abandon her or call her sell out?
I like to think I'm not the only June in the world who heard this song and thought, "Well, that's it. As if the bitch hadn't already antagonized me enough all these years. She even had to call me out." Amanda's the only person I haven't met, that I swear has known me my entire life.
Living without dead time would mean to live each moment to its fullest extent. Not to be "killing time", apathetic. This is relevant to the song because Amanda is singing about someone who just stares at the wall, someone who has every colour of thread and the pattern laid out before them and no will to use the needle in their hand. This needle is the extended central metaphor for the power to change their fate. "The point of it all" is a pun on the needle and the situation.
before i knew about AP i was looking myself at the mirror and wondered why the hell we had eyebrows, they are disgusting then I discovered her, and those were the coolest brows i've ever seen
Oh what a noble distinguished collection Of fine little friends you have made Hitting the tables without you again No we'll wait, no we promise, we'll wait Well June makes these excellent sewing machines Out of common industrial waste She spends a few months at a time on the couch But she's safe, she wears shades, she wears shades Oh but no one can stare at the wall As good as you, my babydoll And you're aces for coming along You're almost human after all And you're learning that just 'Cause they call themselves friends Doesn't mean they'll call They made the comment in jest But you've got the needle I guess that's the point of it all Maybe a week in the tropics would help To remind you how nice life can be We propped you right up in a chair on the deck With a beautiful view of the sea But a couple weeks later we came back And you and the chair were nowhere to be seen You had magically moved to the closet Eyes fixed to the place where the dryer had been Oh but no one can stare at the wall As good as you my babydoll And you're aces for coming along You're almost human after all Why on earth would I keep you propped up in here When you so love the fall The pattern's laid out on the bed With dozens of colors of thread But you've got the needle I guess that's the point in the end But it's better to waste your day Watching the scenery change at a comatose rate Than to put yourself in it and turn into One of those cigarette ads that you hate But while you were sleeping Some men came around Said they had some dimensions to take I'm not sure what they were talking about But they sure made a mess of your face But still no one can stare at the wall As good as you my babydoll And you're aces for playing along You're almost human even now And just 'cause they call themselves experts It doesn't mean sweet fuck all They've got the permanent press And the homes with the stable address And they've got excitement And life by the fistful But you've got the needle I guess that's the point of it all
The lyrics are wrong that Ive looked at. At the end she says "just cuz they call themselves experts it doesnt mean sweet fuck all" and the lyrics say something totally different o_O
haha. Are you implying that perhaps I am an imaginary constructed youtube user for the point of producing an existence communication. I daresay, if that were the case I should surely have dubbed myself something like: Johannes the Seducer, or Judge Wilhelm, or Constantin Constantius and not the Danish translation of the English word "graveyard", - I am after all, a simple existing foolish individual who has nothing important to say :P
10 years later and this album has so much meaning for me. Wonderful descriptions of family dynamics and troubled friendships.
I was nearly crying by the end, it was that beautiful :(
It's about how debilitating depression can make someone, but it also has multiple meanings.

This is probably my favorite of her more recent work. So intense. Her voice sounds... just... amazing.

Aww i wonder where Brian is? Haven't heard/seen him in a while.Does anyone know if he's playing drums for these with her?
Great!
(applause)... BRAVO.... (more applause)....
I haven't heard anyone talk like that in a while. That's wicked of you to notice that quote, and know where it came from.
I love the name, by the way.
I like this song.
Set up the wall, she should've said. She is saving my life!!!!
has such meaning for me
Amanda Awesome Stockings Palmer!

@amazingsierra I'm not sure what to think of that couple. Too much talent. Makes me want to explode with tears of happiness and jealousy.
Fuck, Amanda, you're a genious...

I'm pretty sure that Brian's touring with The World Inferno/Friendship Society. I hope I got the name right. Yah'.
*This is a f*cking awesome song.
I could have written this, ok it wouldn't be 1% as good if I had.. but wow... think I'm going to find something to smash now...
Oh what a noble distinguished collection
Of fine little friends you have made
Hitting the tables without you again
No we'll wait, no we promise, we'll wait
Well June makes these excellent sewing machines
Out of common industrial waste
She spends a few months at a time on the couch
But she's safe, she wears shades, she wears shades
Oh but no one can stare at the wall
As good as you, my babydoll
And you're aces for coming along
You're almost human after all
And you're learning that just
'Cause they call themselves friends
Doesn't mean they'll call
They made the comment in jest
But you've got the needle
I guess that's the point of it all
Maybe a week in the tropics would help
To remind you how nice life can be
We propped you right up in a chair on the deck
With a beautiful view of the sea
But a couple weeks later we came back
And you and the chair were nowhere to be seen
You had magically moved to the closet
Eyes fixed to the place where the dryer had been
Oh but no one can stare at the wall
As good as you my babydoll
And you're aces for coming along
You're almost human after all
Why on earth would I keep you propped up in here
When you so love the fall
The pattern's laid out on the bed
With dozens of colors of thread
But you've got the needle
I guess that's the point in the end
But it's better to waste your day
Watching the scenery change at a comatose rate
Than to put yourself in it and turn into
One of those cigarette ads that you hate
But while you were sleeping
Some men came around
Said they had some dimensions to take
I'm not sure what they were talking about
But they sure made a mess of your face
But still no one can stare at the wall
As good as you my babydoll
And you're aces for playing along
You're almost human even now
And just 'cause they call themselves experts
It doesn't mean sweet fuck all
They've got the permanent press
And the homes with the stable address
And they've got excitement
And life by the fistful
But you've got the needle
I guess that's the point of it all
What is the significance of the guy at the very end going down the stairs?
Hey Amanda, did you write this song for me? I think you did. I quite appreciate it, thanks ;)
that's your opinion, I respect that.
You can hear Ben Folds' influence in this...
he's drumming in another band I can't recall the name though
Has anyone yet figured out who killed Amanda Palmer?
haha touche :P
what happened to her eyebrows?
They are drawn on daily to suit her mood.
Oress 7 repeatedly :D
Kierkegaard73 - get out much? lol.
The lyrics are wrong that Ive looked at. At the end she says "just cuz they call themselves experts it doesnt mean sweet fuck all" and the lyrics say something totally different o_O
there is no point..the only point at the end of it all is the point of a needle.

Neil Gaiman is a lucky, lucky man.
Press 8. :D
Kierkegaard73 - Obviously you don't ;-)
i think maybe she looks a little drunk at vertain points. although maybe shes just very emotional...maybe im just sayin this cos im drunk :/
I always thought this song was about a recovering drug addict...hmm
She's hot!
@nonsequar second
That is not true...bold faces with no eyebrows are really really ugly...
And sorry...those fancy textmarker compensation is not an alternative :(
hhhhmmm
