    We show how to make an ionic liquid from simple components and construct rechargeable aluminum-ion battery. Future artificial muscles could be working with ionic liquids. We make ionic liquid supercapacitor using carbon powder as electrode material. Electrodes are roll-pressed.
    Synthesis of aluminum chloride - urea and EMIm+ AlCl4- ionic liquids.
    Other ionic liquids: EMImBF4, EMImTFSI, EMImOtf.
    There is one mistake - ionic liquids are non-flammable (word inflammable is used in the video).

    Are purity level of this alcl3 is 98% ?,

      @@chemicum i am mixing anhydrous alcl3 98% and urea 99% in common air, the result is the viscosity is too high not like yours, and after a month in glass bottle, it become white hard powder, may be it truly need inert atmoshphere for making DES.

    Really awesome video guys, thanks for sharing. At 2:50 min the lady talks about how you can make a super capacitor by mixing carbon with a binder. Could you please share what the binder is?

      @@chemicum Awesome! Thank you so much! Is the Teflon porous under those circumstances? I thought it was beneficial if the electrolyte could penetrate the carbon substrate? I have tried making a Zinc chloride and urea electrolyte but have not had much success. It only conducts when heated! Is there a good one most people could use with "common" ingredients?

      @@zaneaussie Indeed, we tried urea-AlCl3 ionic liquid from low purity precursors and the result was solid. From higher purity precursors, it was almost liquid at room temperature.

      @@chemicum Ha-ha yes I had the same issue. It keeps crystalizing when it cools! I thought perhaps it was because it wasn't homogenized properly so heated it more and for longer but the result was still bad lol . I wish there was a way and I keep looking for something we can make without expensive glove box and using commonly found chemicals. If you find something please share :-)

      @@zaneaussie I noted that wikipedia lists that AlCl3 decomposes into the anhydrous form at 100 C, and wikipedia also lists that Urea only starts breaking down above 133 C, so maybe setting a hot plate to hold precisely at 105 C will allow you to drive off the moisture non-destructively? Not too certain though since some literature on Urea+AlCl3 seems to suggest Urea can produce decomposition products even if not reaching 130 C.

    ALCL3 IS HAZARDOUS TOXIC GAS RELEASED WHEN REACT WITH MOISTURE. PREPARED IN INERT GAS CHAMBER. BUT I WANT TO ASK YOU , ONCE THE IONIC LIQUID IS MADE IF THE BATTERY BREAKS WILL THE IONIC LIQUID REACT WITH MOISTURE?

      I made two batches of urea-AlCl3 ionic liquid. First, I used cheap fertilizer grade urea, not pure and result indeed solidified at room temperature. In the second batch I used higher purity urea and dried glassware with higher care - and the resulting ionic liquid was actually liquid at room temperature. So, perhaps the key is to purify urea.

      I read that graphite reduces the life of the battery because it degrades over time

    what kind of binder is used for the activated carbon? Does it make a more efficient cell if that process is also done in an inert gas chamber to keep o2 out of it as well?

      binder is teflon in water so adding it in glove box is not a good idea. However, later the electrode is dried and electrolyte is added in argon atmosphere.

    what are good solvents for dilution of these ionic liquids? with what effect on conductivity?
    what about bromide instead of chloride?

      There are several possible solvents, for example nitriles (acetonitrile) or organic carbonates - solvents must be hydrophilic, no OH groups and must withstand high voltage window. Bromide maybe - I think there should be some research available.

      @@chemicum @chemicum dam,"hydrophilic solvents" I was hoping for some hydrophobic solvent as most of these eucltic ionic mixtures are very sensitive to water if not downright delquiescent..
      . I want to try these ionic liquids in a pyridine/DMSO/isononl myristate/PDMS jelly
      and a lot of other fantasies till I get some funding...
      still planning to experiment as much as possible regardless, even if it comes off more like alchemy.
      do you have any thoughts on using bismuth as the metal ion instead of aluminum?

      @@chemicum energy density per pound yes, but of course there's by volume for stationery applications. Bismuth is also a multi valance element that potentially allows exchange of multiple electrons per reaction. Might be scenarios when it's advantageous.

    Quick typo report: due to the unique way in which the English language is formed, 'inflammable' means 'flammable'. I think you want to say that the ionic liquid is 'uninflammable'!

    AlCl3 and urea is an ionic liquid with relatively low conductivity of 1 mS per cm. Does adding sodium tetrachloroaluminate (NaAlCl4) improve its conductivity? Will this combined ionic liquid solution work for Aluminium ion battery as electrolyte?
    Also, will activated carbon cathode work for aluminium ion battery or do we need pure single layer graphene?

      I saw a paper, where many suitable additions were tested. Indeed the AlCl3-urea is a bit too solid for room temperature and should be heated up a little for a better performance.

    Hai, what is the current and volts of urea +alcl3 base battery

      max voltage was about 2 volts, current somewhere within 0.15 and 0.5 A. Did not actually measure discharging current but charging current was up to 0.7 A.
      I will measure the cell in a few days.

      forgot, the battery made in the video was with EMImCl4. I guess urea-AlCl3 gives less power at room temperature since it is more viscous.

      What exactly? It is like supercapacitor, but made of special materials. It bends when voltage is applied

      @@pako8626 AlCl3 reacts with water and moisture and so does EMImAlCl4. EMImCl absorbs some water from air, but does not react with it.

      @@pako8626 I guess that AlCl3 will turn to hydrated AlCl3 x 6H2O, which causes solidification of the liquid.

      It is kind of more like a solvent - it does not carry energy and oxidizer - like blood has glycose and oxygen in red cells. But of course fuel can be added, for example ethanol to be used in a fuel cell.

    So if aluminum battery with this ionic liquid is promising, why hasn't it become popular on the market ?? Aluminum is much cheaper, more abundant, recyclable, and this battery is not prone to exploding like lithium. Also, 2 volts for a rechargeable battery is really good as far as batteries are concerned. Performance may not be up to par with lithium, but the advantages can make up for it.

      It is quite new technology, it needs some time before entering market. There are many scientific papers coming out concerining this topic, perhaps some improvements too.

      Graphene Manufacturing Group Ltd (Stock ticker TSXV:GMG) is building a factory for Aluminium Ion batteries based on Urea-AlCl3 ionic liquid with graphene and aluminium foil electrodes. The graphene has micropores blasted into it to hold Al3+ ions.
