We are the generation that OWNED this hairstyle. I had this in the early 70s, from Bowie to Jane Fonda Klute cut. The first one I got in 71, when I was 17 was flat out wolf
@@jakethompsonhair Does this cut work with fine hair? I love it, it's gorgeous. Also, you had me dead when you knocked your client across the room. Where in Pennsylvania can I find a stylist with humor and talent like yours?
YES!! I don’t know you @debshopay but I already KNOW that I LIKE YOUR STYLE! A girl after my OWN heart!! Rock on mama!! You’d make our crew any day!! My hair looked like this in the 80’s & my hair was ON POINT! There’s nothing sexier than big bed-head! SUPER SEXY for sure!! 🤤 Peace ✌🏻 & love 💗 to all!!
Haha yes I had a client text me that her daughter wanted this "wolf" cut so I had to look it up! Nice to see shags and mullets back in style again. I love doing mullets on myself! Awesome video! Thanks!
I' d absolutely LOVE to see a photo of your haircut, this is a gorgeous style..I vividly remember it first time round circa 1973.David Bowie & Mick Ronson ..Diamond Dogs days ;) xx
Ok so hear me out- hairstylist for over 30 years and I've done almost every crazy style that's come across the proverbial floor- but i would always come back to this cut you've just demonstrated sans an actual name aside from a 70s shag. Once in my salon, i semi sectioned a triangle just off center of my crown and cut it clean off to about 4" give or take- threw a point cut on the ends and razored it for fun... and to the stunned faces of my staff i requested that my guy Josh come work out the rest maintaining a total disconnect but gnarly layers. We shredded it throughout with the razor and added fusia to my bangs. Omg. My fav. My hair loves to be crazy and refuses to conform. The "wolf " style suits me perfectly and requires little to no styling as it has turned somewhat curly in my old age. Maybe a little texture spray or putty to finish the ends and I'm out. It's the consummate 80s rocker chic hair if you ask me and i refuse to grow up or do the typical 'do' for ladies in my age group (I'm 53 in February) The only difference is I'm owning the silver, ditched the dark brown and hot pink! Thanks for a great tutorial!! Very easy to follow, understand and execute Looking forward to more videos
cut my hair using this tutorial! it turned out beautifully and exactly what I need as someone with a 2b~ish curl. takes the weight off the crown of the head which I love! kept the length on my hair too :) thank you, Jake!
Same for me! My hair is so heavy and thick my curl just ended up frizzy and flat, I did this cut in the bathroom 2 nights ago and OmGosh the curl is insane! I love it! And I got to keep the length, it’s below the bra line in the back. So in ❤️❤️ with this cut!
I’ve said it before..you created by far the best shag haircut I have ever seen! Now you have created the best wolf haircut I have ever seen! Looks like I need to make a trip to your salon!
Thank you so much!! I just trimmed my hair using your instruction. I have always cut my own hair like this and never could figure out how to do the back of my hair. Now it makes sense!
As a guy I haven't seen barley any on the internet and nonexistent in person. So I decided to try it out for myself and man I love it. It just fits me perfectly it's my go to cut from now on. 💯
Oh my gosh i so lv this i would live to try this on my hair, i have curly thin hair will it make my hair look thinner or fuller with this cut i will be going a lot longer with it , longer bands like to my chin
I got a wolf cut today. I’m incredibly nearsighted and it’s hard to watch my stylist, so thank you for the tutorial. I’ve been wearing my hair long and straight for awhile. Now I can put my flat iron down and let my curls come out and play!
I think your an amazing hairdresser..its so hard to find a hairdresser who knows their craft inside out and you certainly do. I'm not a hairdresser but I love watching your videos..and this cut looks better than the other "wolf" cuts on social media..if only I could go to your salon🙂
Thanks, Jake!! A great technical video on a modern cut that is so interesting and versatile. As a retired Cos teacher, I love the fact that you show how to make sure the sides are equal. You are my kind of instructor!!
Love this hairstyle and I'm considering getting it...I grew up in the "80's...its a newer take on the shag, love it...My hair is long with a mermaid nature wave. I think it would turn out nice
Finally a cut made for me! I've been wearing a shag for a few years now and love how much bulk or weight is removed but I've never liked the way it looked without flat ironing. My hair is so damaged from heat and bleach that I've been looking for a cut to compliment my super thick wavy mane so that I can stop ironing it and I can simply wash and go. My hair has lots of volume and texture but it's also very coarse which makes it difficult to smooth and straighten. Thank you so much for sharing!
I'm in love with this cut 😍 I've always gone back and forth between a shag and a mullet, on my 2C-3A hair. The wolf cut being a mix of the two is just perfect. I'm definitely going to try this 🤭
Beautiful Job! Glad to say my new Wolf Cut looks a lot like this...my stylist nailed it, but he sectioned the back and front with rubber bands then dry cut it a bit to finish...I was sorta trippin cuz it looked like something I'd do at home, but it really worked. My hair is a little shorter than this, but it still looks great, with all that volume around the crown. I was just having a bit of trouble styling it. I was using the nozzle attachment, but after watching this i used the diffuser in the manner you did, and VIOLA. I love love love it. Cant wait till my hair gets longer, as this is a stunning cut. Thanks for the styling instruction : ). I'll look into the defining mist...as long as it isn't 30 bucks a can, I'll try it
I did mine the other night, I love it, watching this helps me learn how to fix it now. When I did it the natural curl in my hair POPPED! My hair is so heavy the curl jus dies so I end up with a lions mane, now I have curl and it looks great!
I know this hair style is a trend with all ages now but it’s been around since the 70s 80s.. I love this cut and I just did it on myself. It looks great!! Great job
Ive been using this hair cut video tutorial for the oast 2 years . Minus the bangs , and every time i live the results . This is my top favorite clip and i live by it❤❤❤
I have watched this video a lot and yet, every time I am watching it l fall in love with this shape of hair 💗💗💗 Thank you, dear Jake 💗 and God bless you 💗
This is how I wanted my haircut like 6 months ago. I haven't found a stylist that can do it yet. Now I have the video I'm taking it to my hairdresser and I'm gonna have it done. I love this look for long hair and I've always warned my hair long. Perfect cut.
So i followed your tutorial on the shag cut but it ended up looking more like this. Im not in any way disappointed with it. I’m just happily surprised that it actually looks good because usually I can’t for the life of me cut hair in any shape except just trimming the ends straight off. My hair naturally is a thin, kinda-straight-kinda-almost-just-a-little-bit-close-to-wavy, “Nordic” type, and 14 years of me constantly putting hair extension in didn’t really help the thinning situation… but with this haircut it actually looks both fuller and longer even. Just wanted to rant and thank you for a very easy to understand and follow-through tutorial for people who isn’t as experienced in hairstyling. I’m very happy with the way it turned out 😊
Thank you for demonstrating how to create a guide from one side to the other most of my women's haircuts end up uneven and when I check it I don't know how to correct it generally so this is a great tip thank you so much
A bit too much dialogue but….. I have spent years trying to get a stylist to give me a curly mullet, I have 3a long curls. They would never cut short enough on top because they thought it would be too disconnected from the length I wanted to keep. Thousands of dollars later I have started cutting my own hair because it costs a lot and I am never happy with salon results. There are a few other tutorials I have tried and they were pretty close. This one is exactly right. I finally have a super full top of my hair and get to keep my long ringlets and I LOVE the disconnect. Thanks for this video and now I have a guide for my next trim instead of point cutting separate curls and thinning out here and there and ending up with not quite right. This cut perfectly frames my face and lets me keep my short bangs and top layers. I would love it if you could make a video of this cut with long curly hair. Pretty please with a mullet on top hahaha
I watched so many wolf cut videos this weekend. I found this one the most helpful. I want to keep lots of length in the back so thanks for explaining how to connect it to the front 🧡 I'm going vibrant copper too 😍

Jake, your wolf cut is the best I've ever seen. Love it, love your work and love the knowledge you share! ❤❤ Thank you for this! That's what I love about the shag....it's been around since the dawn of the dead! 😂😂 You can improvise it and do all kinds of things with it. You can invert it and turn it into an A-line bob. Hi! I've been trying to get this haircut forever.. getting old now. My hair is down to my waist and I'd love for you to cut my hair. I wish I knew you. I'm going to try to cut it myself ✂️ 🙏 😬.
You have a great humor, I enjoyed so so much this video tutorial. It was so well explained and you made it look so easy. My fave hairstyle for medium/long hair.
The elevated cut you did to the back...how much of a differential would be too much between the hair that was left out of it (hanging down the back) and the hair that was cut? If this was done on really long hair, I'm guessing the mullet part would have to be more graduated or done in several elevations? (i'm not a professional obviously).
This was popular in the 70s and in the 80s and still today a popular cut.
By the way, I’m 70 and will always keep my hair in this style.

That's what I love about the shag....it's been around since the dawn of the dead! 😂😂 You can improvise it and do all kinds of things with it. You can invert it and turn it into an A-line bob. It can be disconnected and becomes a mullet...a traditional, centuries old hairstyle among some of the pueblo Native Americans, like the Hopi Tribe. And we definitely can't forget how it (the mullet), became synonymous with the 80s and 90s. A shag can be worn by any hair texture, you can wear it tamed or untamed and it never gets old.

I love this cut and style
I just did this on my latest wig using this video. It came out so cute. I left a long tail for a nice long updated mullet. Thank you!
