I always say of the town that I grew up in; it had 3 churches, two bars, and a place to get your hair cut and that's about it. I got out of there by joining the military and while I supported neither of the wars I eventually served for, I am thankful for getting out of that too, at least. I left a lot of people behind back home to live that life though, and I regret that. I googled some of my high school friends this week and found almost all of them had busts for meth. My mom died of an overdose around five years ago. Those little towns are full of promising people just caught in the black hole. Thanks for telling these stories. Your music is the realest I've personally experienced.
I've loved Mr Isbell since drive by truckers and early solo stuff like southeastern. Love this, it's like standing in the middle of a hurricane. All windswept small town pathos and gravitas. Long may you and Amanda run dear sir
This crosses well into Springsteen territory for greatness. When you write songs from the perspective of the common people at a point in time you're documenting history. This is the stuff epic songs are made of... Listen to the lyrics! This is for every Blue colar worker in small town America who didn't get out before the great escape to the big cities. "There's an answer here, if I look hard enough There's a reason why I always reach for the harder stuff It wasn't my daddy's way He was down in the mines all day I know he wanted more than mouths to feed and bills to pay.... I thought about moving away But what would my mama say? I'm all that she has left and I'm with her every day As soon as the sun goes down I find my way to the Mustang Lounge And if you don't sit facing the window You could be in any town".
Ron Bennett Since I discovered his music in 2013 that’s how I’ve been describing his music to people who haven’t heard him. I tell them to just imagine that Bruce Springsteen was born in Alabama and you’ve got Jason Isbell.
That line about not facing the window punches me in the soul every time I hear it. "If I just don't look outside maybe I can forget for a few minutes that I'm stuck HERE!" But, of course, there's no real way to avoid looking outside sooner or later...
Cumberland is an area in the Anglo-Scottish borderlands. That's where many of the people who settled Appalachia traced their bloodline to. The culture there was remarkably similar to the culture that developed on the American frontier.
Talent + Hard Work = Damn good music. Thanks for doing what you do; your songwriting is epic, and your lyrics speak to the little guys doing soul-crushing work to support our families. Great to escape it all while enjoying your life's work. SO blessed to have discovered you.
It doesn't get better than him at this time, his lyrics and guitar is just insane...….plus he has his wife as a killer violinist! What?! Such a killer combo
This is great, and Jason is one of my favorite artists. And while his sad songs are fantastic, I do wish he’d write more rockers like this and Super 8.
I sobered up in the Cumberland Gap. Crossville, Tenn. Now that all the coal is gone it’s mainly good folks keeping to themselves but they’re wrecked by meth…
I ain’t cut out for war, unless I know what I’m fighting for. American brave young folk are being sold on fighting Iran, so Trump can avoid answering for some of the crimes he committed. My wish for those young soldiers is they have the wisdom to realize sometimes refusing to fight requires more bravery than fighting.
The middle east has been at war for 1000 years. Yeah nice try, blaming it on trump. And I'm a soldier who has been to iraq 4 times. Obama was president under one of them. Enjoy the music and shut up with your political views.

If i look to the 50 or so people I knew as a 16 year old drop out with a party house the only ones who did ok picked up one day and left.

Definitely hearing some Springsteen here.

If you love old Bruce, definitely check out The Hold Steady. They make me nostalgic for times I never experienced!
@@johnn.2017 I have and I'm a huge fan of The Hold Steady.
Being from southeast Kentucky, I feel this song in my soul. Damn good song writing!
It hits differently when every line relates to you and your heritage.

He made look up what amphibole is, and now knowing that makes the song even better

Gotta be one of the best bass players in the business.
Jason, you the man. You guys are such talented musicians and songwriters. Way better than any crap on the radio. Keep it up!!!!
right??
Thanks for your sincere compliment and love, I’m not complete without you as my Fan 🌹🎻 I have you to be most thankful for 🎻 🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶🎶🎶
"I ain't cut out for war unless I know what I'm fighting for" YES
....how true is this today??
It's hard for a video to capture the power this song has live. Awesome song, awesome band!
I can only imagine.
Solid track. Great lyrics. Catchy. Can't ask for more.
Saw him at the Ryman last year and have tickets again this year. Best venue in the South.
Hey Remo,
I listened to Jason daily for about 6 months, yet I was blown away each of 2 times seeing Jason & band LIVE.
When will he be at the Ryman, again?
In my opinion, the 2nd best concert venue in the world, 2nd only to the Royal Albert Hall!!
The drums on the recording really roped me in that speed, that was never replicated. Really made the song.
totally agree! the drums are what got me too
Chad is a beast and really propels this band.
Best living songwriter. Period.
Hell yes!! What an awesome song!!!! Rocked out to it this morning on the way to work!!!
Incredible... Have tickets to seem him in Phoenix at Symphony Hall on August 28... I can hardly wait!
This song leaves me speechless.....
Saw him in Dublin
Awesome and Jason knows how to put on a show
Wonderful artist and this is a great song
Stare into the Cumberland Gap long enough and the Cumberland Gap stares back into you.

Congrats, my friend -- not easy to do under the best circumstances, let alone in the thick of it like that.
He’ll be in Little Rock at a 1400 seat venue in a little over a month!! Can’t wait!!
Solid 11 out of 10. It's "one more"
This man is IT.....notice
Get it, Jason. Get it!
Was his daddy down in the mines all day?
Wow
Will be at the Ryman in October.
I'm from Cumberland Gap TN and I can tell you this song tells the truth. This area is crap and it traps most everyone that is born here.
YES!!!
Yeah buddy...
Yeeeeeeesss!! Lovee youu!
Who is heading to the Mustang Lounge right about now?
fyi - from looking at my photos from each night and matching "outfits," this looks to be from 10/13/17.
Michael Bodayle don’t call what you’re wearing an outfit!

@@shawnmcgregor7002 Good Scots surname you have there, Shawn….👍🏴🎸🇺🇸
So jason isbell said " Jesus would not have voted for Donald Trump" SO jason do you really think you speak for Jesus?
He does as much as any of us who see Trump for what he is...the Anti-Christ.
Jesus wouldn't put faith in any man.
Read the New Testament - do YOU think Jesus would like Trump?
Flatt and Scruggs did it a lot better
