- This is the TRAGIC story of the B1 Battle Droid That DESERTED the Droid Army and became a farmer.
During the final months of the Clone Wars a battalion of B1 Battle droids were marching through the important republic farming world of Antamont in order to capture a key Republic stronghold. While marching towards their target, a blast mine was detonated, tearing through the droid forces, leading to something incredibly mysterious happening. One of the B1 battle droids was sent tumbling through the air, off the nearby cliffside, hitting his head on a rock below. This injury gave the b1 battle droid complete independence, and the ability to disobey any order given to it.
So, i’m going to break down the full story of the B1 battle droid who quit the Droid army after realizing that he was being controlled, and his tragic fate.
The story begins on a rocky trail leading to the Republic stronghold on Antamont.
At the command of General Grievous and Count Dooku, the separatist droid army are marching towards the stronghold, but fail to notice a group of Republic blast mines placed directly in front of their path. The commanding B1 battle droid of the battalion steps forward before his troopers, and unfortunately activates the group of blast mines, shredding his forces to pieces, sending their metal parts flying through the nearby forests. The deep red explosion rings out through the nearby mountains, scorching the trees, and sends a lone B1 battle droid plunging to what he thinks is his death. He knows that he is easily replaceable and will simply be left as a pile of scrap once Dooku and Grievous discover the incident.
As his metallic body is freefalling down the cliff, he shuts down his photoreceptors and prepares to be destroyed and replaced. Fortunately for him though, his circuitry never shuts down. His thick metal head hits a rock below him with a loud clunk, before triggering memories, or video recordings, as they are for a droid, of his creation in the factories of Geonosis.
The horrific memories of his creation play back in his head, as he is forced to remember every time he was destroyed on the harsh battlefields of the Clone Wars, before being soulessly salvaged, rebuilt and deployed countless times. Despite being programmed to feel no emotion, he was forced to relive the painful cycle of life that he had gone through multiple times during the war. The b1 battle droid was finally snapped out of the pain, as a flash of light filled his photoreceptors, finding himself awake right next to the rock that just damaged his head. Once the B1 battle droid awoke, he was initially shocked, but soon realized that his circuitry was disconnected to the hive-mind computer, and the nightmares that came from it were silenced. If you really think about it, this sounds very similar to how Tup and Fives reacted just before their deaths.
So let me know down below if by the end of the story, you can actually feel bad for the deserting battle droid, because similar to the clones, he is discovering that all of his actions and his ultimate fate are already decided by the separatist command computer, which gives him absolutely no choice in his actions, until this moment. The droids might have actually been more similar to the clone troopers of the Grand Army of the republic than we thought. It does really show how brutal Palpatine was when playing Both sides of the Clone Wars.
Soon after this, he attempted to join back with the surviving members of the droid battalion, but a shocking realization came over him, that he wasn't being forced to by his programming anymore. Because of this, the battle droid quickly ran away from his battalion, which caught the attention of one of the Grapple droid units in his squad. The grapple unit chased the lone deserter all the way to the edge of a very steep nearby cliff. One the deserter realizes that he has run out of room to run, he stops just before running off the cliff, but as he feared, the grapple droid had caught up with him. - Розваги

My head cannon will be they are descendants of the clone farmers since its implied that enough years passed for the battle to be completely forgotten

I feel bad for all the B-1's. I said it once, I'll say it a million times, and stand on these words:
The Separatists made better people out of robots, and the Republic made better robots out of people (never saw a clone running from danger, shrieking, *"OH NOOOO!")*
Actually they do, but it's very ocasionally. Just like with the droids.
Neither abandon their life of warfare very often at all.
Also, in that scenario, life or death warfare, it's usually better to fight than run. Running, exposes your back to enemy fire. Unless you're in good position, it's better to fight than retreat.
Besides, who knows how they'd treat clones if they captured them?

Heck, clones weren't even considered republic citizens, so i guess both sides treated them like crap.
It really amazed me how cool the Jedi were with an army of slaves.

As for the them actually being slaves thing, they were truly desperate. And at just the right time, at just the right moment, an army appears.
An offer impossible to refuse.
And that's the genius behind it.
It's the perfect trap.
I'm just enjoying the thought of Separatist generals that weren't robots, present from when the robots were still drones slaved to one large system, complaining about how, "The Season 8 patch ruined everything!"
I also like to think that one general who operated one of the most successful detachments out of all the droid army was a guy who treated his droids like people:
•Didn't beat them around or destroy them, but still punish them for speaking out of term (and actually managing to get his personal units to clam up if they don't have anything useful to say, during a combat situation)
•Giving them rousing speeches
•Going through casualty reports on destroyed droids recollected, tinkering with a few in his personal time, as they're rebuilt to try and slip in an upgrade to counter how they were destroyed previously

Well, from the looks of it: I'm pretty sure it's from an *original* Clone Wars comic (based off the '03 cartoon) so I'm assuming this is Legends material. Still: Pretty neat little story!
I like how both continuities have touched on there being something more to droids between stories like this and that comic they did about C-3PO explaining where he got the red arm in Force Awakens, it's interesting stuff.

Things to think about:
1. War is never pretty, especially in the Star Wars universe. Once you engage in a battle, you're already lost. You forfeit your self-control as you race to build weapons and armies instead of living a peaceful life you once had.
2. Droids B1 are purposely made to be weak, easy to tumble over (so their parts don't get damaged too much, easy to salvage). Their purpose is to intimidate the enemy, since a souless army who fear nothing and always march forward is harder than those who have self-perseverance. They will never retreat or offer mercy.
3. "If droids could think, there'd be none of us here."

B1s are weaker and cheaper because theyre made to be effective in large groups
The sad part is when they stared actually putting some brains in the droids they did run. But they still couldn't desert. When one had its programming damaged, it instantly recognized its situation and switched sides. It also became way more effective because half its computing wasn't being taken up
As a combat veteran, I fully agree with #1. War is ugly af.

I sympathize with the battle droids. When they don’t have all their thinking done for them, they can clearly desire something other than a life of war and servitude. Come to think of it, I’d really love to see a meeting and reconciliation between escaped battle droids and escaped/surviving clones. It would be nice to see them admit that they were both forced into a messed up situation and don’t hold any ill will towards the other. I can actually imagine them coming together to create a new life together away from the strife and tyranny of the Empire.

@@musicalvanilla3890 The point it, B1-battle droids were also created to perform tasks like maintenance, piloting a ship, loading cannons, etc. They have "hands", therefore they have the ability to farm in my eyes, while the Grapple-droids were mainly made for combat! The grapple droid was equipped with electrically charged industrial pincers, which are used to crush or impale enemies and obstacles. Now it's the question, can they farm with that?

I love these stories of droids and clones escaping their predetermined destiny. The b1 droids always had a good sense of humour. It is nice to see what they could do with it while retaining their free will.
Oh hey, my old school library had this book along with some of the other Clone Wars comics. I don't really remember what happened in most of them, but this one always stood out in my mind. This story was very melancholy yet oddly satisfying, and I remember reading it quite a few times. Now that I think about it, this would be a great candidate for a Star Wars short film if it hasn't already been done.

Honestly, in Sci-fi like this, I'm really dissapointed by the lack of droids that gain independence, and by extension, sentience, especially since it seems like a rather easy thing to do, even accidentally. They're very clearly alive, even if none of the characters acknowledge it, and despite the ability to reprogram them, they can think for themselves if disconnected, as well as gain emotions when it happens.
Not gonna lie, the cowboy Battle Droid on the thumbnail looks cool.
There is also a B1 Battle Droid who similarly hit his head and malfunctioned and joyned the Republic.

With how starwars is, I believe that almost all droids are sentient but become slaves because of certain programs forced inside them, It really is a lot more tragic then it is for the clones. At least the clones knew they had a life.
Honestly I like the "and then they became a farmer" ending. When all you've seen for so much of your life is death, destruction, and chaos, it's good being able to cultivate the growth of something.
This was my favourite mini-story in the comics when I was a kid

This comic truly embodies "The Indifferent Cruelty of the Universe When The Indomitable Human Spirit Walks Into The Room" even though the protagonist is technically a Droid
Well, both armies are manufactured. It's horrifying to think about, especially if that other army is cloned and is treated like droids or machines. The droids are machines, however, buth the it's the faction that created created droid army that gets used and thrown to side at the end of the Clones Wars that i feel sad for. The CIS was a legitimate government but was used like a rag doll by some of the faction leaders.
Hovik T. Atreides It's sad really. Both the republic and the CIS was corrupted by some of the faction leaders.

A war of mutual destruction. I always love the comparisons made between the clones and droids. Especially since I learned Droids in Star Wars do have some form of Independence without all those protocols managing them.
Also I think calling him Free since Freedom is what he wants most is appropriate if y'all agree.

I’ve always thought the B1's have a certain charm to them, Watching Star Wars The Clone Wars when I was younger I always thought it would be fun to see a friendly one since they hardly look intimidating at all and have quite funny voices, Personally I’d really like to see more like Coppertop and Mister Bones and of course this one. Edit just watched another video and came back to say Bats is awesome as well. 🙂👍

I honestly think that stories like these, where the droids are (sort of) the protagonist, are better than the ones about the clones,
While yes, clones are more related to humans and their human emotions, they were only forced to change their targets to the jedi with order 66.
Droids, on the other hand, have no control over their own choices despite clearly having a personality. The are more expendable then that the clones are, but the have a high chance of being placed back in the battlefield after being recycled.
While I understand that there aren't alot of droid comics about the B1, I would still like to see more of those stories if there are any.

AThe b1's are are one of the most interesting and unexplored parts of the Star Wars prequel era in my opinion. Over the course of the war we see them go from basic battle droid responses to behaviour more similar to that of say r2. Both begin life as a utility droid in essence, droids that have functions that hardly require much interaction or personality. An astromech fixes mechanical issues, a droid soldier marches into combat. Yet like r2 we see b1's evolve a personality as time goes on without a core wipe. I can hardly think of a b2 or droideka that can say the same.
They missed an opportunity for a really dope side arc with this, couldve done a whole series of that droid becoming a bounty hunter or some shit like that, woukdve been sick af

I’m calling it Sarum, kinda like a play on Sarcasm. I like it, that kinda makes me think of how his attitude was during the mini battle.
I love how such a surprisingly large part of the Clone Wars lore actually raises good philosophical points about both that specific conflict, and about warfare in general. Like the observation that the Clones are essentially slave soldiers, little more than organic tools that will inevitably be discarded when the fighting ends. Or what we see here, with the argument about trusting the decisions of superiors over thinking for yourself.

I think that Battle Droid has a happy life now, The Farmer with the Green Hat probably called him "Frank" and Frank the farming B1 Battle Droid now has a new life with farmers.
This is a neat story, shows that the clones arent the only ones who realise they are a simple drone for the waring factions. Its for palpatine and dooku's convenience they have no agency or individuality

The best name for the droid would be "Monco". It's the name that was given to Clint Eastwood's character in the movie "A few dollars more" by his reputation, since his real name was never given nor did he tell anyone. "Monco" means "To have a mutilated arm" or "One Handed" and "Incomplete". It would best represent the droid, even if they did fix his arm, he is still "incomplete".
