Agreed, climbing like that will cook your arms before you're even in the tree canopy. If I had to guess, the ascent was more of a "safety demonstration", and the first time he went up (unfilmed) was not fully tied in ;) Excellent rigging, and superb job on that tricky notch cut at 3:15.
